  • The first part of a video recorded during April of 1994 showing many and various ex UK lorries going about their business in Malta and adjoining island Gozo. Once commonplace former British types including AEC, Albion, Leyland, Bedford, Ford, Scammell, Guy and Coles cranes are seen. The recording gets under way with one of the last mentioned suspended in mid air ... but still ticking over after having over-reached itself. There's a little sequence of an elderly Guy making a scene when asked to remove itself from a small muddy rut, in the end help is accepted from a small bulldozer. Half the trouble was that it's prop shaft to the rear drive axle had been removed making the once 6x4 into a 6x2.
Part two will follow shortly afterwards if this upload succeeds!

This film is like stepping back in time, Im watching all these old lorries that I remember as a kid, but here they are still working and earning their keep, this is not some truck Fest where they are all lined up shiny and bright, they are old lorries and yet still working somehow, its almost like I have gone back to my youth, amazing! it really is....

To all the maltese running these wonderful old lorries, you want to keep them going as long as you can. modern kit is just too complex and will no way last like these have

I was on holiday in Malta during this particular year. Its a shame I wasn't really clued up about vintage lorries then.I remember there being a lot of old buses like at 3:00 and other old vehicles about then. The paintscheme of the cement mixer at 8:13 looks familiar too, perhaps I saw one from that company too. Trouble is I was often petrified being on the roads in Malta.I was a passenger, as I was only 10 at the time.I didn't really like looking at the cars and traffic going by. It was nice to see the various Scammell Handymans and Trunker? in this video and the AEC lorries

that old km with the AEC 505 engine must have been quite tight fit although theres a advert on a classic car website advertising a 16 ton km tipper with an leyland 680 engine in it for sale quite a lot bigger than the standard 466/500 bedford engines

what was the lorry at 6.00 was it an old scania? great vid in my time I have driven most of these and with the old leylands you allways made sure you had a set of injector pipes because they shook that much that the pipes were allways breaking

End of use in the UK , then to have a new lease of life in Malta brilliant ! No erf , foden leyland now , I wonder if we still export second hand right hand drive trucks to Malta today .

Overloaded much? Some trucks there just keep going and hardly breaks down when they do it’s an easy roadside repair to get it out on the road again. Quality and reliability of the trucks are great.

Anyone notice the second blue lorry, which looked like a Bedford TK or KM (carrying concrete beams), made a noise like an AEC - especially the gear whine - as it boarded the boat? A conversion?

In Malta it was very common to 'modify' our lorries but with todays trucks you wouldnt even dream to change something

Importing Lorries so these mad *Arab* islanders can go crashed them up? Oh please! When watching the whole video of the various trucks driven. Its funny hearing all the *Arab* voices and *Arab* shouting and swearing! I am doing a project on *Arab* dialects and expletives and I find this video about *Arab* truck drivers fascinating!
