In 1986 I drove my boss in his motorhome from California to Bloomington, Minnesota and stopped in Arcola, Illinois to visit an Amish friend of his he had met in South Dakota. First, we visited him at his cabinet shop where he produced cabinets of the highest quality and beauty which would rival cabinets from anywhere. Most everything ran off pulleys and wide flat belts powered by a big diesel engine that turned a driveline under the wood floor. We then drove to Mattoon to buy cheese and then back to Arcola to have dinner with Ervin Hostetler's family in their modern home. They explained that they didn't have photos on their walls but had simple paintings; the reason being that the second commandment forbids graven images and idols so that's why photography was forbidden. I don't believe it's a belief that someone's soul gets sucked out of their body. We stayed overnight in the motorhome and spent the night placing waste baskets under the air conditioner because there was a heavy downpour all night. and the roof seal had failed. In the morning after finding out about the leak, he had us go with him to a neighbor's farm where we could park in a huge barn out of the rain to make the repairs. He had taken his wife and two young daughters with him in their horse drawn buggy. While there, his wife asked my boss's wife if we would like to take a picture of their daughters. We were hesitant given their beliefs on the subject, but after several minutes and a discussion decided to do so. I don't remember the justification for letting us take photos, but maybe it was because it wasn't for their use, but ours I don't know what happened to that photo and wish I still had it. I also got one of their horse and buggy taken from a position so Ervin and his wife would not be seen . That was one of the best trips I've ever been on, mostly because of our experience with the Amish.
Dave, that was a really really nice video. Your knowledge of the Amish is invaluable and delightful to hear. I'd love to see more of that. That thing you were trying to describe, the thing about the photos. It's called compassion, you simple didn't want to offend anyone. Well done!!
Thanks for taking us along and showing us a glimpse of Amish territory in Pennsylvania give Bella a back scratch and y'all have safe travels and we'll see you on your next upload
Mellow video today, Dave. Many cultures do not want photos taken, best to always ask or abstain. My worldview is that I believe in people and what they believe, I’m always honored when they share with me. Be well and keep being you. See you next time.
Over the years I have interacted quite a bit with Amish businesspeople. As a general rule, they don't mind photos from a distance where the person's face can't be seen, as with your buggy photos. I would guess the man would have allowed you to film his shop, as long as you didn't film him.
you did what you did dave great show but you cant steal noone soul, but nice of you to think of others not wanting to be in a pic, hugs love terry and scott and both the pup pup too,
I did not know Smicksburg was a little over an hour from Pittsburgh. We went to Downingtown/Coatesville (4 hrs. East of Pittsburgh off turnpike) area & enjoyed visiting the Amish Country there in the years past. Kraut looked really good. I enjoyed seeing the rural area, and loved seeing the antique shop. Elderberry Jelly, Blackberry Jelly, haven't had in years. I haven't seen Quince Jelly anymore. Thank you for sharing Dave, this was really nice. Enjoyed seeing you, Bella, Teri, Scott, & Punkin'. Hope you all have a wonderful weekend. Oh, I get to visit the Menonite store here.
Hello Dave and Bella I love the Amish community, how they make their furniture there's so much they do by hand no tools. Hope you're enjoying your visit with Scott Terry and pumpkin. Be safe and have fun.
That was one of my favorite areas to go when I was little. We use to go near Allentown. Then we would just continue in PA. All the way from Connecticut when gas was under 9 cents a gal.💕💕🐾🐾 You make me laugh so hard sometimes. Your awesome. I hear you about sucking souls. You did the right thing.
My family is from Clarion County. The Amish have moved in there as well. I lived in Ohio for a time and there is a huge Amish community south of Canton. It runs through two or three counties. I now live in Colorado. The town I live in has a large Mennonite community. The town just south of us has an Amish community.
The Amish beliefs about photos comes from a Biblical Commandment. A quick Google search gives the details….it’s really about humility and lack of individuality. Even the dolls they make and play with don’t have faces. I’m from NJ and went to Lancaster and surrounding towns often as a weekend getaway. I always loved the area and shopping for homemade goods. Great video and I’m so happy you are taking some downtime visiting with Scott and Terri. ❤️
The Amish are very interesting people we visited them when I was a child and for a few years. One wrote us saying how nice we were. I know some use power now
Wish you could have stopped by the WINDOWS ROAD NUTRITION store in Smicksburg... and said hello to Alma and Daniel from John at Herbal Plus in Dayton, NV.
It is their face that shouldn't be photographed. They believe the photo is a "graven image" that is in the second commandment. Photos from a distance like the people in the buggies are ok. Amish dolls also have no faces. It is good to respect their beliefs!
I think Native Americans used to think that about the pictures or maybe still do. When I was a kid, I went on a bus tour with my mother and we went to an Indian Reservation. When my mother got the roll of film developed, the pictures of native Americans were not developed or included in the prints.
Dave have Family of Friends that r Amish over here near Lancaster. I live in Maryland. I really love going there and staying with them. I to respect their ways. They do not like photos. But they r wonderful craftsman. There would be no music in there business. Appreciate your video today. They moved to Kentucky and now in Indiana.
I lived in the heart of Amish country when I lived just outside of Lancaster in the cutest small town Lititz Pa. I loved learning about the Amish culture and their homes are plain but well built. I am glad you addressed their belief about being photographed. Its not weird because frankly many christian beliefs can be considered weird or wacky too.
Hi Dave, enjoyed the video about the Amish, gonna visit them one day....I see you like kraut also, I like to eat some most every day, small portions...safe travels to you and Bella.
Love Elderberry Jelly but it’s really hard to find even the berries here and then I’d have to make it. My favourite of all is red current and it’s hard to find too. The Amish make beautiful quilts, they are world renowned for them. I’ve never heard that about the Amish and cameras but have heard that about some tribes they discovered deep in jungles who had never seen cameras and when shown the pictures were upset because they didn’t understand anything about cameras and had maybe never seen their own image except as a reflection in water. Bet they were great eggs , can’t beat free range.
That’s one thing I do miss about being home in Tennessee being able to shop at the Amish store. I always love to buy their jams and jellies and on Saturdays we would go by and have a ham sandwich and fresh ice cream. I have never heard of the folklore about taking their pictures. I know I have seen many awesome pictures of the Amish on their farms or doing their chores. Great video Dave. 👍🏻❤️🐾
you were far enough away from the ones in the buggies that you didn't get pictures of the people inside so I think you can relax about that, I think their souls are safe
Oh man am I so bummed! I wish you would have gotten back to me.. I just drove back from Chicago visiting family and I was taking Rt. 80 almost al the way! I would have liked to stop and say hi to you and Scott and Teri!!!!!!
Being from the west coast have to say love the Amish communities...Spend alot of time there when in Indiana visiting family...Shipshewana is a great Amish community with the huge Amish flee market there and a place where i get all my Amish supplies to take back home called Yoders....They have everything...I see they also have a Yoders in New Holland PA....Also spent some time in Nappanee at Amish Acres when it was there...Funny to see the horse and buggys everywhere....They even have turn signals on them now LOL...They also really have some really nice old time bicycles they use alot...
Hey Dave, what a treat for Sunday morning! Enjoyed the visit to the Amish Community! I would’ve been all over that sweet blackberry jam! Would’ve had that And my peanut butter out in a heartbeat!
I'm so glad you respected their beliefs no matter how silly we might think they are. I made sour kraut since I was a child . Couldn't have passed on The Elderberry . There's an Amish farm in Delano, Tennessee not to far from where I live. Love ❤️ going there. Got the best produce. They have wonderful cheese and butter .so good 👍 Thank y'all for the wonderful site seeing to a place I've never been. Loved it Have a great day 👍👍👍👍👍🙏❤️❤️❤️🐾🐾💕🐾🐾💕🐾🐾☕
you are about 2.5 hours away from me. I live on the outskirts of Jersey shore Pennsylvania. up in the pine creek area. and there is nothing like fresh eggs. I raise my own chickens and my sister and brother in law love it when I deliver them some eggs. they say they are the best tasting eggs ever.
Dave I was raised in Amish country & had quit a few girlfriends that were of that faith. The photo belief was explained to me by one of my girlfriends, she said that if they didn't know or agree to the pictures then their souls were fine. If they agreed to it then they were going against their beliefs, that's when it became an issue. I use to go to their house & spend the night, they could come spend the night with me only if my parents promised there would be no TV watching by the girls. My family even went & help rebuild a barn & home when it was burned down by a lightening strike. They are amazing people, we use to get fresh eggs & milk from them all the time.
About the picture taking... I think the "steal your soul" idea may be just an old tale .... I was watching the filming of another TH-camr who asked an Amish man (off camera) why they don't want their pictures taken and that man said it was to keep them from being too proud. Either way I'm glad you respected their customs. It shows you have a good heart. Been watching your videos a long time now. Generally like just about anything you film.... I love it when you talk to Bella about those "bad deers" etc.
Dave, you are a very considerate person. This was a wonderful video. It makes me want to see Pennsylvania. I could not see the people in the buggies that you recorded. I think you are genuinely a very nice person who respects other peoples beliefs. I admire that about you. 👍😊
thank you for respecting the amish. we were up at black forest inn yesterday and there was some mennonites that came flying by on mini cycles that's what I call them. if you get the chance you ought to ride up there. it is beautiful. there is actually a walking path called black forest trail. I didn't know it was there.
So that’s what’s wrong with the world today. All the selfies are sucking the souls right out of everybody. Seriously though, I think that you showed them great respect, so kudos to you.
I live in Lancaster County and most are ok with pics. It seems to mostly be the Old Order Amish old timers that would be bothered. We buy alot of fresh produce from Amish and my husband gets worms for fishing from one of their little boys.
In the 1830's, George Catlin did portraits of many people up the Missouri River. Some of the Native Americans didn't want him painting them due to the same belief that it would capture their soul.
I totally would've bought that sweet black cherry jam! And I'd have bought an elderberry too, just because you said yummy. I've never had either flavor before. You paid $2.50 for those eggs? Wow, and those were fresh! Dang, I pay $5 for store bought allegedly free range brown eggs. I remember back when it was much more obvious that the Amish didn't like us Englischers. I guess now we're accepted as a necessary evil. I'm not surprised that you are so respectful! It's not silly at all. Have Teri and Scott ever been to any Amish areas before this one? Any plans to visit Lancaster area? I haven't been there for around 25 yrs. I wonder how much it's changed. I used to love to look at the quilts and the furniture. I remember Shoo Fly Pie, which was much too sweet for me, but I loved the name. I'm glad Teri and Scott got to experience it with you, glad you guys are traveling together right now. Great video, Dave! Thank you for taking us along!
Most Amish today will not pose for a photograph. Considering it a violation of the Second Commandment, which prohibits the making of "graven images," the Amish believe any physical representation of themselves (whether a photograph, a painting, or film) promotes individualism and vanity, taking away from the values of community and humility by which they govern their lives.
Glad you stopped by the Amish place. I'd love to visit a place like that! I have seen people video a lot of Amish places. I do think the older people think that you steal their souls when you take a picture. There are others that don't mind. I had always hear that they feel only God can make their faces so you can take pictures, just not of their faces, But I don't live near Amish so I may have that wrong. I have a friend in PA whose husband sharpens blades for the Amish farms & businesses. HUGS~Donna
Considering it a violation of the Second Commandment, which prohibits the making of "graven images," the Amish believe any physical representation of themselves (whether a photograph, a painting, or film) promotes individualism and vanity, taking away from the values of community and humility by which they govern their lives. Still nice of you to respect their beliefs.
I used to tell people that when they'd try to take my picture. (They were trying to steal my soul.) But taking stranger's pictures, especially Amish, is kinda rude. Also, some folks believe mirrors are portals for souls.
I don't think it's wrong to have other people in the background get included in my picture as long as i didn't do it intentionally. It's diffinitely not illegal in public places. We should not take picture of other people unless there's a 'good reason' for it. But it's good that i now know about this issue with the Amish beliefs...i'll make sure that wouldn't accidentally include them on my picture.
I have lived in Ohio all my life, and love going to "Amish Country" down Rt 39 & roads off of it. This area in the last 15 or so years has got a little TOO comercial......losing it's charm for me. Now I need to get to PA and check that area out, it looks great!
They Consider it a violation of the Second Commandment, which prohibits the making of "graven images," the Amish believe any physical representation of themselves (whether a photograph, a painting, or film) promotes individualism and vanity, taking away from the values of community and humility by which they govern their lives.
Dave I bet it was weird being the passenger instead of the driver but I think you did the right thing in Amish country at least from my experience I don't embark on their lives that's just out of respect and most times if you ask they'd rather not anyway all I remember is it was a hot day and this Amish lady was selling watermelons and she was pulling them out of the spring and they were super cold from the cold water and they were the best watermelon I ever had in my life okay I'll talk to you soon be well hugs to Bella from Winston 🤗🤗
There's nothing weird about respecting the beliefs of others. Thumbs up that you show that respect. 👍👍
Too that.

Nice story, thanks for sharing.
Wow, we really enjoyed this one, love dem dere Amish, my wife said, he should get that sauerkraut, & you did!
With todays high gas prices, Amish life is looking better everyday. Great video.
Excellent video!
I appreciate your respectful attitude toward others. You are a good man.
It’s not weird thinking… it’s respect! That’s why I keep watching you, you’re a stand up person. Far and few left like you anymore.
Yes that’s right. I heard the same thing.
Thank you Dave for another awesome video 🤙🏻🤙🏻
And that is why we like you Dave, because you're respective of others. In present times, it's what we need.
When you picked up the sauerkraut my mouth started to water. Yum
Dave, that was a really really nice video. Your knowledge of the Amish is invaluable and delightful to hear. I'd love to see more of that. That thing you were trying to describe, the thing about the photos. It's called compassion, you simple didn't want to offend anyone. Well done!!
If only everyone felt as you do. This is why you are so well loved, Dave.
People have all kinds of beliefs . The best thing is to respect them , no matter how weird they might seem. You did the right thing Dave.
Thanks for taking us along and showing us a glimpse of Amish territory in Pennsylvania give Bella a back scratch and y'all have safe travels and we'll see you on your next upload
Just had our own sauerkraut with pork, so good, better than what you get in the grocery stores!
That is sweet of you to respect their wishes. ❤️

Loving the sky. The patterns the clouds are making. Don't see that every day. Regards. Thanks for sharing your story.
Hey Dave, your verbal description of the Amish Family it’s like a Norman Rockwell painting!
Very thoughtful that you are respectful of their privacy.
Thank you Dave for the video. I grew up 4 miles from Smicksburg
Beautiful country!
That is Nice that You respected them. I would have asked first. I enjoy watching machinery operate.
I am friends with Amish and they are nice people. It was nice seeing what you saw.
you did what you did dave great show but you cant steal noone soul, but nice of you to think of others not wanting to be in a pic, hugs love terry and scott and both the pup pup too,

Top video , so interesting to see.alittle of Amish life, esp as I am in UK. Love your channel and Bella the happy star of the show 🐕🐕🐕
Hello Dave and Bella I love the Amish community, how they make their furniture there's so much they do by hand no tools. Hope you're enjoying your visit with Scott Terry and pumpkin. Be safe and have fun.

I love visiting the Amish Communities. Such a sense of comfort & peace.
The Amish do not think if you take their photo it steels their soul. Hahahaha...

Thanks for sharing this video. I always wanted to go to the Amish area when I lived in Ohio, but never made it. Have fun with Scott & Terri.

It's not silly dave. You just respect the Amish and their traditions and beliefs. Good for you! From Montgomery al 🙏 ❤️
As many others have said, you are being respectful of their beliefs. Great video as always, great to see y'all and Bella & Punkin too!!

Hi Dave, while traveling through Indiana, saw a Amish buggy with a boat trailer attached.A Kodak moment to be sure
The thing about photos, it's reference to bible verse about No graven images.
Hi Dave, enjoyed the video about the Amish, gonna visit them one day....I see you like kraut also, I like to eat some most every day, small portions...safe travels to you and Bella.
You should visit shipshawana indiana a huge amish community
I'd not heard that about them, but the Cherokee have always said that.
Ghosts can be seen in pictures. 👻

Elderberries are natural anti-virals!!! Viruses make “colds, flu, etc”
Nothing wrong with respecting someone's belief. The machine shop sounds like a sight to see!

Nothing says more about someone’s personality than them saying “worried about a dog jumping on my truck”
What kind of dog is Bella? She kinda looks like a border collie to me. I enjoy your programs😀

I would try the bacon dressing if it didn't have much sugar. The same goes for the sour kraut.
HUGS~Donna
I think it’s the first time I have seen you with blue jeans on lol

Many First Nations folks way back when, also believed that getting their picture took stole their souls. Wonder if the Amish got that from them.

No sleep for you!
