  • How an Israeli artist's project turned into a journey of self-discovery in Kochi. Meydad Eliyahu is a visual artist who was born in Mesilat Zion, not far from Jerusalem in Israel. Hailing from a family of Malabar Jews (a group of Jews that moved from Kochi to Israel in the 1950s), he's grown up hearing the stories of his family heritage. An art project called 'Box of Documents' started Meydad off on his journey to explore his roots; and as it unfolded, his journey became the project itself. Meydad has travelled thousands of miles to come back to the city that he has heard and read so much about, but never seen before, in an attempt to find his way back to his roots.
    101 Roots is the journey back: To discover the origins of our crafts, traditions, heritage and ourselves. Who we are and what we do are reflections of where we come from - and where we might be headed.

      ***** he converted very recently??? Bro he had passed away on 2015 July while delivering speech... Is 2015 recent for you.?? Preety shocking.. I think you still live on those days when Raja and maharajas of yours use to architect and excrave different sex positions on temples...
      Coming back to his friends... That might be possible... I too have friends who r not of my religion n they are many...
      But they are well educated and jst don't follow blindly on the ideology of Salvarkar or khaki chaddis like you...

    I love stories like this! My paternal grandparents left Hyderabad Deccan in 1951 for Pakistan, but my paternal grandfather was from Rajasthan and my paternal grandmother was from Uttar Pradesh. My maternal grandparents also left India but they left during the Partition for Bangladesh (which was then East Pakistan) even though they were Urdu speaking. My maternal grandfather was a second generation Egyptian living in Calcutta and my maternal grandmother's origin (as far we know) is very diluted so no one can give us an answer on where specifically she's from.
    Both sets of grandparents left behind siblings and family in India and I would love to go explore my roots and see where they lived, meet the extended family because I have second and third (and so forth) cousins that I have never met. When people ask me where I'm from (I'm Canadian), I very much hesitate to say from Pakistan because I have no ethnic ties to Pakistan: I'm not pashtun or punjabi or sindhi or balochi, nor do I have any village in Pakistan that my family is linked to. My family has been metropolitan for generations (even tracing back to the colonial area). I would love to explore India, I've studied it so extensively.

      Kat Khan You have such a rich cultural heritage!! I am so jealous, my family is from Lucknow, I am a awadhi by heritage, living in Lucknow, and my native language is Hindustani ( Urdu Hindi) just realized my heritage is plain.😑😑

    • @katkhan6049
      @katkhan6049 7 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      No ones heritage is plain! Speak to your grandparents and elders and I'm sure you'll find out so much about your heritage! Ask about marriages and friends and I'm sure you'll find your family was involved in some exciting historical events! India is such a diverse place in itself, there was always something happening!
      Enjoying digging into your family, you never know what you'll find! Cheers, from the Canada. Also enjoy Lucknow, I hear it's very beautiful.

      Anumeha Saxena also it's so wonderful to hear from someone who's from Lucknow (^ that's where my paternal grandmothers family is/was from). Hope you're doing well.

    What a memorable journey.A son visits his great grandfather.It is possible because of burial system.In India we cremate the dead & no physical memory is left behind.Most emotional moment was when the youngman touches the grave.It must be like touching his great grandfather.Another thing,-Jews lived here for 2000 yrs. than why they left.Parsis live here respectfully.Pls. note,- no grave was defaced or damaged.That too shows tolerance of India.

    Wow! India is truly a mother.... (I am sure it is the only country that never persecuted the Jews, and never will, or even thought of it). God Bless the King who gave them a peaceful land to live and to worship Yahweh!
    Babu! God! Bless Him.. He is still a faithful servant of his people.
    The new traveler has found a full circle...
    God Bless Israel! always from the bottom of my only heart and God Bless India.. Jai Hind!! (My motherland... I am oceans apart but She is my Mother Land, even if I don't see her She lives in my heart and my blessings to all who are with her 1.2 Billion)
