I hand paint all my kits, so here's some tips that works for me. 1) Get yourself some extra soft bristle brushes in a variety of sizes and mostly flat tipped not tapered. 2) Make sure the brush is almost completely dry. That little water allows the paint to flow onto the fibers without binding. 3) Follow cleaning and storage instructions for your brushes. 4) Mold release is there whether you can detect it or not and often has pooled in places. 5) Only use the front 3rd of the brushes bristles. Paint should never get deep into the brush because if you don't clean it properly the paint will build up and fray your brush making streaky passes. 6) As always remember painting is an artform so do what we artist do when we paint. We learn paint flow and control. New skills make better finished products.
yeah his brush stroke was just poke it on and hope for the best LOL. i was like what is he doing. that is not a brush stroke. he is jabbing the paint on. no wonder he had air bubbles
I've found when using these markers it works really well to take a very very fine grit sanding sponge and lightly sand it and it'll leave a pretty decent finish
Honestly, the full kit paint looks way better than one would think for a marker. I certainly wouldn't mind one kit in full gold/silver chrome on my shelf like that.
I recently bought a set of DSPIAE felt-tipped markers. I have 5 primary colors and 5 metallic colors. The schtick with them is that the tips are made of a sponge like material and the tip is really sharp, so it's like a combo of a marker and a brush in one. Would love to see you try those out, they seem great to me!
You're supposed to pull the tip out and put the other end in reverse. The other end is a flat sharp tip meant for painting directly on the surface. The round end you used in the video is a high flow setup meant to be used with the gundam market airbrush system.
NGL as I see you testing the markers on the spare parts I thought they were pretty shit but damn the result of that painted gold grandaddy looks absolutely amazing
When Amuro went through his "Extra" phase. Or perhaps a Federation attempt at propaganda, showing Zeon that the Earth is so abundant and powerful, they could plate their beloved walking cheat code with precious metals. Head-Canon is a tricky thing even for random one-off painting projects of model kits.
I've been thinking of trying to do this for experimental purposes just to see what would be the outcome and if it's worth it but man you saved me time 👍
That actually turned out well. To me the texture looks like those of die-cast parts. Dunno if you’re familiar but there’s this chroming power called Kosutte Ginsan. I’ve seen a handful of videos using it to chrome up some Gunpla builds.
ZakuAurelius, with all due respect and I mean this from my heart because I always watch your reviews and you've helped the community a lot as well.. I paint Warhammer minis and Gunpla (and more).. The uneven result isn't because of the paint itself but it is because of the following, the tip of the marker, the brush and the method that you used. In order to achieve an EVEN result, you must use the right brush (your brush is too small for the surface that you are trying to cover), thin the paint and apply multiple coats in other words, let the marker bleed its ink in some sort of a basin, add whatever thinner is necessary then apply the method that I mentioned. In Warhammer, we NEVER (well, at least 95% of the time) apply "base" or "layer" paints directly from the pot (Citadel paints or whatever paint), we always thin the paints first to avoid such ugly results.. It's something that a lot of the people in the Gunpla community don't do or don't understand so they end up using a spray or airbrush instead.. In reality, even results can be achieved if done correctly.. I do agree with your point about using the marker for small details though and I believe that it is the strength of such markers.. Hope this helps others.. Have a nice day..
Thanks! I know what you’re saying and this was really just a glorified test of the markers. Never was intended to do a “proper” paint job. But I take your point that even in this case it was a good opportunity to show the “correct” way to do it. Missed opportunity there I suppose. Next time!
The biggest difference is part count and size, a typical kit like hg have fewer part so marker is kinda feasible but when you dive into the 1/100 scale the part count started to rise and using marker would take you forever to complete a kit, that's the reason gundam builder prefer using airbrush for less hassle
The Gundam Marker EX line seems very similar for me... The coverage is quite good and opaque seemed better with leveling. It didn't come out textured but still has some "brush strokes"
Ngl the roughness actually adds to its charm lol, might grab some markers to try this out. Can you try it with some lacquer thinner and give some feedback?
How does the size of the barrel of the Hobby Mio compare to the Gundam marker? I have the marker airbrush and actually quite enjoy using it for hybrid painted/unpainted builds. These look nice but likely would look much smoother if able to be shot from the marker airbrush.
Yeah, matte will make it fade. If it's water-based, topcoats might not work like they'll still be erased by alcohol. Or it just might be me adding topcoat a little bit light.
I used the Gundam markers when I was a kid but quickly realize they don't look good at all. It's a good starting point for kids learning how to paint model kits. But for larger surfaces for sure buy a can of spray paint.
I think it looks pretty ok! Just put it up on your shelf and be done with it. Not sure about the durability of the paint for handling. Also curious about adding water slides directly over this paint.
Applying decals should be fine! And yep exactly. It’s good enough to look like a little gold Gundam trophy or something. Obviously not like a tiny representation of a real giant robot, but just a simple lil’ gold robot toy - which it is 😆
I’ve done exactly that quite a bit, with Gundam Markers and SD kits. It does increase the shine, but it also makes clear parts more reflective. That can be good in most cases, bad for others (mono eye visor).
How did you get the marker come out like this? When I use my gold marker the paint comes out dark brown. No matter how long I shake it still comes out crappy looking. Ive tried three of the same kind of marker too...
That depends if you handle it a lot or just leave it alone. I have been using it for three plus years and I have a MG Heavyarms that is still nice and shiny and it’s my first time using Molotow about three and a half years ago.
Planning to paint my RG S.F Gundam inner frame. Is it safe to use the gundam marker GM04 on ABS plastic? I can't afford a paintbrush and opting to use the marker.
2:00 Using a Brush with Markers why bother with the markers in the first place then? as opposed to just paint jars is there's some niche use or technique they offer?

@ZakuAurelius Hey have you tried the foil method to make the parts chrome/gold/bronze/copper? its kinda a advanced technique, ive only seen military and car modelers do it.
Great vid zach! Would you consider v fins too large to go over with just the marker? Ive always wanted some golden v fins that look good on my kits lol.
I always used to paint the v fins with gold gundam markers before I started airbrushing, they are very suitable actually, just make sure you paint the whole part in a single stroke for the paint to dry evenly on the whole part
love the video, its rarely to see some handbrush painting on youtube, i'm also on progress with painting my mg justice by handbrushing, going to replicate the special coating version. hope it is work >w
Yuck, the uneven paint isn't your fault either. It's because gundam markers are garbage. I avoid all gundam markers like the plague. I highly suggest Aiye chrome markers, they are AMAZING. Even finish on smooth plastic AND metal. It has a real chrome finish unlike the runny glitterly junk in gold and chrome gundam markers. They are cheaper too. It cost me 12 bucks for 2 lousy gundam markers I threw in the trash. It cost me 10 bucks for a 6 pack of the Aiye chrome markers that has DIFFERENT sized tips for smaller or larger parts. They are great for doing panel lines in chrome too. And unlike the alcohol based gundam markers that will melt your other paints if it comes into contact, you can paint things with the Aiye markers and then panel line over it in black with micron pens or other stuff you might prefer. I promise once you try alternative to gundam markers you will never go back.

Do you have any videos that demonstrate what you're describing handy?
i don't think it's the paint but the felt tip of the hobby mio shedding a bit

Come on dude, it's just a RX-78-2 with MSN-100 anti-beam coating.
I think the markers are lacquer paint, so perhaps adding a few drops of lacquer thinner might even the surface?
I think you could certainly try that, mix some in the tray for brush panting
@@ZakuAurelius Yup. But that would be basically brush painting with extra steps.
Now we know how to make P-Bandai gold gundam kit at home. lol
I use the XGM100 EX Plated Silver Gundam Marker for small details like thruster bells etc. Works very well

@@ZakuAurelius I guess we know what you'll be giving away for the next competition then. Gold MG grandpa, silver HG grandpa, and bronze SD grandpa lol

that is surprisingly good for a marker wtf

I'm fully surprised you dont need any primer for this. After painting with the markers, should i topcoat it? Will matte topcoat ruin the paint?
Matte will make it less shiny and look fade.
Semigloss and gloss will make it look shinier and light reflective.
Yeah, matte will make it fade. If it's water-based, topcoats might not work like they'll still be erased by alcohol. Or it just might be me adding topcoat a little bit light.
Any topcoat on these should be fine
Probably will be great to paint detail parts.
The paint itself looks really good enough, they can probably make spray cans in the future or release bottled paints. Really nice
They already has lot of prethin colors for airbrush
XGM100 Gundam Marker Silver Plated I think is now Available
I used the Gundam markers when I was a kid but quickly realize they don't look good at all.
It's a good starting point for kids learning how to paint model kits. But for larger surfaces for sure buy a can of spray paint.
Gundam Marker Ex Plated Silver Chrome XGM100 is the one that sold separately
If you lightly blow on the piece while sweeping it by your mouth will smooth out the bumps with the marker
Have you try Gundam Marker EX for plated silver? I think it’s my favourite marker yet.
For Chrome i highly recommend molotow markers only negative is that it takes ages to cure.
Molotow is awesome. Doesn't seem like it takes that long for me honestly.

im thinking what if we were to try using the gundam marker spray gun, will the paint be evenly spread? hmm...
Did you top coat the paintjob on the rx 78 2? What happens of you don't topcoat after painting a model kit?
It looks damn good in that gold paint with the markers
Would it have helped if the piece painted was warm? Just wondering the difference. Any input?
I never thought about brushing like that
Hmm either way u can still see the imperfection and the base color underneath. Nothing beats airspraying i guess
Planning to paint my RG S.F Gundam inner frame. Is it safe to use the gundam marker GM04 on ABS plastic? I can't afford a paintbrush and opting to use the marker.
should have made a direct comparison with the gundam marker ex chrome which mechagaikotsu already covered
you should try to airbrush the paint, i know using Molotow Liquid Chrome Marker in a airbrush comes out pretty good
I wanted to paint Custom Gouf's Sword / Knife very smooth, but I see so much strokes on the knife. :( I don't have a air gun either.
What’s the best way to paint gold accents on sinanju without airbrushing
Very small brush and steady hand
Can you compare them with the gsi creos EX markers? Those are more chrome metallic and a better comparison i think
I use the gundam marker for sry brushing by putting a brush on the tip
HI @
ZakuAurelius can you apply mr hobby premium topcoat over the super metallic paint?
Cool vid! The gold looks awesome. But do these paints and markers make plastic brittle and break like the rumors??
I've seen some techniques where people buffed em up with some cotton buds to get smoother results with this kind of chrome marker

Not looking all that great but I think using Marker Airbrush System to paint will look so much better.
Will the paint chip off over time using the gold gundam marker?
If you move the model around a lot then yes that’s more likely to happen. If you have it just standing there then no

Think the Vallejo Metal Varnish would rock!
Try to make a crome a gold gundam again but use a Molotow chome marker and a transparent yellow or honey marke
