Thanks, GCN. Enjoyed the video. One suggestion when you are displaying data. If you are comparing two values, for example undrafted climb time vs drafted climb time, it's helpful to put the two numbers being discussed on the screen at the same time, and perhaps even displaying the difference (+ or -). This would help viewers process the data faster and easier.

Not mentioned is the psychological element. In addition to any drafting benefit there's also the drag benefit of being pulled up a hill by a stronger rider and fighting not to lose their wheel makes you suffer more and so go faster than you would riding it on your own.

@@gilgermesch you are correct, I'm wrong. I missed it, which I think shows that it wasn't given the importance that I think it has. However, I accept this is because the videos focus is on the physical drafting effect. Being a climber 99% of the time when riding with friends my job is to set tempo on the climbs to pull them to 105% effort but I know that when on occasions I'm hanging on to somebodies' wheel on a climb, it's the not letting go rather than any wind resistance reduction that has the greater impact on my time.

She would normally be in one the faster groups, but this Saturday, she was riding in the slow group, due to being in her third trimester. We were having an enjoyable talk when we reached the start of the climb - 4km at 5%. I rounded the corner just in front of her, and dared to think I would beat her up the climb. About halfway up, she passed me, and I thought, well, I’ll draft her to the top, and maybe I can sprint for the win. The last few hundred meters, she sprinted away, and I was left in my usual position. But, I told myself, it took _two_ of them to beat me!

Drafting is good on climbs mainly to help with getting up. If someone is infront it helps physiologically to get up.

Well even if you are moving slowly up a hill, as long as you are moving, there will be a benefit from drafting. So even if the benefit is really small, if you are in a group it's free.
So unless you want to attack or you are about to blow up if the pace is too high, you should draft.

@@guidospanoghe8896 If you want to beat the faster one, hang to his wheel. Since you will have to follow him anyway if you want to beat him so you might as well take the drafting benefit even if it's really small.

I had always thought that the psychological benefit of being able to ride behind team members is great, Both within the team and instilling some insecurity in the other Riders-look at us, if there is any one of us considered the weakest in our team, we are still better than most others. For years I followed Columbia Hi-road as the team came full force to the front of so many races. This era we have the men in Black, then white, then Red; any color kit, the message was We are SKY, coming at you-time trials, mountains and most of all we will alway be a force of concern.’’ Sigh, I’m missing cycling-GCN helps.

I just like to have a pacemaker because I can't climb that well to begin with. I've climbed GMR by myself to struggle and climbed it with a pacemaker and did it faster and felt better. I'm sure a draft helped a bit but for me it was the pacing that helped more psychologically.

steep climbs its just pace keeping as someone else said, you can measure the effort to stay with someone and if your feeling good you can explode out. If you look at Quintana using Landa for pacing, he got dropped a few times so its not saving energy

On drafting up a hill. I would have to say it all depends on what her caboose looks like and if she had broccoli for breakfast LOL. You wouldn't want to get blasted by the exhaust by the one in front of you. I know if you draft off me at any time you run the high risk of getting fumigated, for real. Especially after a link of Boudin and a chocolate milk. LOL
