    I say in here the imagery is from November 6th, 2021, but obviously I don't have a time machine, so it was captured September 6th. It feels like it should be November, though...

    Zeke, increasingly, FS Sierra province ecologists are pushing for replanting at lower densities with careful attention to slope, aspect and species mix considering climate change. They're also encouraging early use of Rx fire in replanted areas. It would be helpful next time you show this if you would point out the burned private lands, too. Those clearcuts are all SPI land. Also, the fire is named for Caldor, which was named for the California Door Company, so it's pronounced CAL-dor as in California, not CALL-dor. Thanks for your work.

    I have heard "forest management" the term, tossed around so much that I was very skeptical of it as anything but a way out of being serious and a launch for various political and commercial interests. This is the first place and video that I have ever seen, read or known of that talked about the real issue in detail and what it is in a way that makes scientific sense. Now, if we can just get it to dry up less and rain some more...

    The things I've learned in the last week. Whew. Ive donated, but I think a subscription is in order. I live in the Bay Area so I'm not directly in a fires line, but as a mountain biker I've spent countless hours rolling through some of these burnt areas. Now as I roll through areas I see with different eyes. Here's my political rant: Instead of handing out free gov't unemployment money can we instead move that money into forest and land management and create jobs that way? Rant over.

  • @Mudpuppyjunior
    @Mudpuppyjunior 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    My experience is the Forest Service logs and plants very little of its burned ground anymore. They take out the hazard trees along roads and leave the rest to its own devices which usually means a vast brush field. A drive through the 2013 Rim Fire for instance confirms that.
    There are extensive lands logged and replanted but they are mostly Sierra Pacific or other private landowners.

    Thanks for the video this was something I was very curious about. Yeah, like the stewardship is what’s needed. When I look into it online it’s just a bunch of organizations looking for donations to plant trees. Should we be spreading wildflower seeds since the tree planting may not be the best plan for the future? It’s going to suck to look at these burn scars and the only thing I can do is go into the forest with a chainsaw and cut ladder fuel.

  • @bob_frazier
    @bob_frazier 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    We entrusted the USFS as stewards of our public forests and they have clearly failed. That was job one! If they were a private corporation we'd fire the CEO, the board, and restructure the company. Maybe that is what's needed here, a litteral teardown of the fight fire with billions mentality while spending nothing on stewardship. Yes, I'm pissed off. Yes, I want a bumper sticker that says "Fire the Forest Service - NOT the forest".

    • @Mudpuppyjunior
      @Mudpuppyjunior 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      How many burned lumber company properties or clear cuts have you walked?
      Since they make money off of growing trees as fast as possible they don't leave but come back and thin/treat the young stands so they're not overwhelmed by brush etc.

    • @marcsorensen2985
      @marcsorensen2985 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Mudpuppyjunior tons, and currently there is no lumber company doing anything for the forest. the money is not there for them so they left. also most of the timberlands that they logged are federal lands that they we able to get for pennies on the dollar till the trees were gone, now we got a ton of logged over land with nice roads , but same age stands of immature trees.
