The structure of Lamentations tells us something about how God wants us to understand Him. He wants us to bring our grief and complaints and weariness to Him and think and feel these concepts and emotions carefully; He wants us to bring them to Him “from A to Z,” or from “Aleph to Tav.” And Lam 5:22 doesn’t end on a high note, but with a question: “Are You angry with us still?” But in the center of our experience with Him is Lam 3:22-24, the remembrance and assurance that the Lord is faithful and gives us new mercies every morning. Yes, His faithfulness (in the structure of Lamentations, and in life) is surrounded by tragedy-and in the center of our walk with Him, He wants us to never forget that “Though he brings grief, he also shows compassion because of the greatness of his unfailing love” (Lam 3:32).
When we married 35 yrs ago, we sang “Great is Thy Faithfulness.” Since we recently lost our daughter, Lam 3:22-23 has become my favorite, allowing me to get back to sleep at night: “The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases; His mercies never come to an end. They are new every morning. Great is Thy faithfulness!”
May you and your wife continue to be strengthened in the innermost parts and growing in the understanding of His love for you (Ephesians 3:14-21), year after year!!! May the fruit of this sad event be your continuous growing, your tangible, visible sanctification in the Lord, and your growing love for the Lord, and joy in Him, and may it lead to the praise of His Name for ever and ever. Lamentations 3 is a well-known chapter. It starts out with God's wrath. But then, verse 22 turns to praising God for His faithfulness. The love of the Lord is steadfast. His mercies are new every morning! Lamentations 5 is a cry to be restored back to the Lord. What was true of Israel back then is true of all humanity today. We are wayward sinners. And because of our sins, we lost fellowship with God. But, praise His holy name that He provided a way for us to be restored back to Him. He gave His only begotten Son, Jesus Christ, as the final atonement for our sins. And, when we believe in Jesus, we are promised that we will not perish but have eternal life (John 3: 16). I think about some of the Psalms that speak about God's wrath or affliction. Lord, You are good, and You are faithful. Your wrath lasts but a moment, but Your favor lasts forever (Psalm 30: 5). I went astray, so I was afflicted. But now, I learn Your word (Psalm 119: 67). Thank You, Lord, for bringing me to the end of myself so that I turned back to You.
I realized the Bible isn’t all doom and gloom. God is good and takes care of us because if we’re left to our own devices we’d do so much harm. His rebuke is necessary and he’s always ready and willing to forgive when we repent. We can depend on him for everything. And he blesses the obedient. Obedience is freeing. When we follow his path we don’t fall into snares. Easier said than done but he’s with us in the everyday struggles. We can do all things through Christ Jesus who strengthens us
After finishing our 26th book today, I am realizing God’s faithfulness is far greater than I have understood before I started TBR. Thank you for making getting to know God so enjoyable!

People say "There's no handbook on parenting." But there is! On parenting and relationships and leadership... this is it! The extremes that people have gone to is because of a lack of knowledge and context of the Word of God. People should do The Bible Recap before marriage, before starting a family or a business... if we get any church or Bible growing up (I didn't but asked a lot of questions) it was little chunks and stories taken out of context. That has caused more harm than good for the Church and individuals. I feel like all the questions and unease, restlessness I've had my entire life are starting to be calmed as I am seeing who God really is. There isn't an OT God and a NT God. Jesus isn't only NT. And God's love for us is timeless and endless. It's a beautiful thing! I'm so grateful. I pray my grown kids will venture into this plan and keep learning about their Father.

The Scripture that stood out to me today was Lamentations 3:21-23 NIV "Yet this I call to mind and therefore I have hope: Because of the Lord’s great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail. They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness." Just as the sun rises each morning, we can be assured of God's love and compassion for us even in our sin. God allows punishment and it is meant to draw us back to Him. We need Him, and we need to be reminded of this often. Thank you Lord, your efforts with us are relentless.

When I got to chapter 3:23, I could not help but recall the beautiful old hymn, Great Is Thy Faithfulness. I had to look up all the lyrics and read them. What a blessed reminder of God’s boundless love for His children.

As a mother who raised 2 sons, I can so relate to the need for both discipline and love. That old phrase, "This hurts me more than it does you" bespeaks how the Father must feel when this is necessary for us. But just like a good parent, He knows where we need to be. And he loves us enough to consistently remind us.
So many times when disciplining my son, or talking about the need for discipline, God would bring to my heart & mind His need to do the same with me. So many times tears would flowing as my heart was breaking for my son, for my sin & for breaking God's too.
Day 238 Lamentations 3-5 Today we finished our 29th book of Bible. Chapter 3 is about God’s faithfulness amongst all the evil. Remember God used these things as discipline and response to the sins of the people. Vs 22-24 the steadfast love of the Lord never ceases. His mercies never come to an end. They are new every morning. Great is Your faithfulness. The Lord is my portion says my soul. Therefore I will hope in Him. Vs 25-27 The Lord is good to those who wait for Him. The soul that waits for Him. It is good for the soul to wait for the salvation of the Lord. The challenges are beneficial to us. Knowledge of God is formed in these times. Vs 39 any punishment we receive for our sins is justified. Why should a man complain about the punishment of his sins? Vs 40 Calls them to examine their ways, confess and repent to God. God draws near when they repent. Vs 57 God draws near when the repent and says do not fear. God is always telling His people not to be afraid. He is near. God’s has promised to take vengeance on Judah’s enemies. God’s enemies don’t get the final word. Sin doesn’t get to win. Chapter 4 The 2 year siege and destruction of Jerusalem. The people foolishly look back on what they miss. But during this time they were oppressing the poor, enslaving people, and sacrificing their children to false gods. God is acting more harshly to his own kids then to Sodom. That is because Sodom was destroyed immediately. God was long suffering with His children. His aim is to discipline and restore. He is trying to train them towards obedience and trust. God pours out wrath on the disobedient that don’t know Him. Things are so bad in Jerusalem. There is a famine and it is so severe that there are people that results to cannibalism. Their king has been captured. Their neighbor Edom is rejoicing over their problems. God will punish Edom over the fall of Jerusalem. Chapter 5 A prayer for God’s mercy and restoration. The discipline that God brought yielded repentance. Vs 16-17 the people praise God in the midst of their circumstances. They declare you our Lord reign forever. In 3:32-33 God is complex. Though He caused grief, He will have compassion according to His steadfast love. He does not willingly afflict or grieve the sons of man. He wants to produce obedience. Sometimes this takes discipline. He is full of compassion and steadfast love. Discipline sometimes is the best gift He can give us.
My God shot comes from Lamentations 3:21-24. I call it a “But God…“ moment. Jeremiah has just finished recalling, immense suffering and feeling as though God were his adversary in verses 1-20 of Lamentations 3. Jeremiah has a “but God…” moment in the verses that contain my God shot. Those verses say “Yet this I call to mind and therefore I have hope: Because of the Lord‘s great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail. They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness. I say to myself, ‘The Lord is my portion; therefore I will wait for him.’” What a 180° turn Jeremiah makes. He accepts his/Jerusalem personified’s judgment and then remembers he has hope because of the Lord‘s great love. Then he resolves to let God be his portion and wait for him. when we stop and apply “But God…” to our situation, it changes so much! So “but God” can be such a powerful phrase to apply to our circumstances, pain, insults, attacks by Satan, etc. But God…!

I still wonder if the people making comments actually read the chapters.... Famine, innocent children begging for bread, racked with hunger, they waste away... 4:16. "the Lord himself has scattered them: He no longer watches over them." I agree with chapter 4:6 Sodom had it easier. A flood would've been easier A parent would never let his child starve to get him to repent. Or have compassionate women cook their own children for food. 4:10. 5:10. "our skin is hot as an oven, feverish from hunger. Women have been ravished in Zion and virgins in the towns of Judah.". How does such violence bring people to repentance??
This violence & sin were choices made by the people, not God's doing. He allows us to sin but He grieves at these actions. God kept reminding them of the good life they had while serving & obeying God. Today people are still making similar choices. God allows evil to exists... for a while, but He wins in the end.
Hi! I think you raise a good point. The first part of the chapter describes the horrific conditions brought about by the siege of Jerusalem. But a careful reading from verse 22 points out that they did not perish, like the people of Sodom. This is the mercy God gave them, they survived to be taken into exile. If you remember from Jeremiah he told the people of Jerusalem to surrender to the Babylonian army as they would be treated well, which is what happens to those who went in to exile.
Understanding Who God is and better understanding His character requires reading the whole passage, Lam 3-5. Why does the author graphically lament the horrors of Lam 4:10, and still claim that “Though He brings grief, He also shows compassion because of the greatness of his unfailing love” (Lam 3:32)?

I read or heard that those verses (3:22-23) are “an island of hope in an ocean of despair”. It’s right in the middle of the book.❤

Vs 22-24 the steadfast love of the Lord never ceases. His mercies never come to an end. They are new every morning. Great is Your faithfulness. The Lord is my portion says my soul. Therefore I will hope in Him.
Vs 25-27 The Lord is good to those who wait for Him. The soul that waits for Him. It is good for the soul to wait for the salvation of the Lord.
The challenges are beneficial to us. Knowledge of God is formed in these times.
Vs 39 any punishment we receive for our sins is justified. Why should a man complain about the punishment of his sins?
Vs 40 Calls them to examine their ways, confess and repent to God. God draws near when they repent.
Vs 57 God draws near when the repent and says do not fear. God is always telling His people not to be afraid. He is near.
God’s has promised to take vengeance on Judah’s enemies. God’s enemies don’t get the final word.
Sin doesn’t get to win.
Chapter 4 The 2 year siege and destruction of Jerusalem. The people foolishly look back on what they miss.
But during this time they were oppressing the poor, enslaving people, and sacrificing their children to false gods.
God is acting more harshly to his own kids then to Sodom.
That is because Sodom was destroyed immediately. God was long suffering with His children. His aim is to discipline and restore. He is trying to train them towards obedience and trust.
God pours out wrath on the disobedient that don’t know Him.
Things are so bad in Jerusalem. There is a famine and it is so severe that there are people that results to cannibalism. Their king has been captured.
Their neighbor Edom is rejoicing over their problems.
God will punish Edom over the fall of Jerusalem.
Chapter 5 A prayer for God’s mercy and restoration.
The discipline that God brought yielded repentance.
Vs 16-17 the people praise God in the midst of their circumstances.
They declare you our Lord reign forever.
In 3:32-33
God is complex.
Though He caused grief, He will have compassion according to His steadfast love. He does not willingly afflict or grieve the sons of man.
He wants to produce obedience. Sometimes this takes discipline.
He is full of compassion and steadfast love.
Discipline sometimes is the best gift He can give us.

My God shot comes from Lamentations 3:21-24. I call it a “But God…“ moment. Jeremiah has just finished recalling, immense suffering and feeling as though God were his adversary in verses 1-20 of Lamentations 3. Jeremiah has a “but God…” moment in the verses that contain my God shot. Those verses say “Yet this I call to mind and therefore I have hope: Because of the Lord‘s great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail. They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness. I say to myself, ‘The Lord is my portion; therefore I will wait for him.’” What a 180° turn Jeremiah makes. He accepts his/Jerusalem personified’s judgment and then remembers he has hope because of the Lord‘s great love. Then he resolves to let God be his portion and wait for him. when we stop and apply “But God…” to our situation, it changes so much! So “but God” can be such a powerful phrase to apply to our circumstances, pain, insults, attacks by Satan, etc. But God…!

Sodom had it easier. A flood would've been easier
A parent would never let his child starve to get him to repent. Or have compassionate women cook their own children for food. 4:10.
5:10. "our skin is hot as an oven, feverish from hunger. Women have been ravished in Zion and virgins in the towns of Judah.".
How does such violence bring people to repentance??
This violence & sin were choices made by the people, not God's doing. He allows us to sin but He grieves at these actions. God kept reminding them of the good life they had while serving & obeying God. Today people are still making similar choices. God allows evil to exists... for a while, but He wins in the end.
Hi! I think you raise a good point. The first part of the chapter describes the horrific conditions brought about by the siege of Jerusalem. But a careful reading from verse 22 points out that they did not perish, like the people of Sodom. This is the mercy God gave them, they survived to be taken into exile. If you remember from Jeremiah he told the people of Jerusalem to surrender to the Babylonian army as they would be treated well, which is what happens to those who went in to exile.
Understanding Who God is and better understanding His character requires reading the whole passage, Lam 3-5. Why does the author graphically lament the horrors of Lam 4:10, and still claim that “Though He brings grief, He also shows compassion because of the greatness of his unfailing love” (Lam 3:32)?

The structure of Lamentations tells us something about how God wants us to understand Him. He wants us to bring our grief and complaints and weariness to Him and think and feel these concepts and emotions carefully; He wants us to bring them to Him “from A to Z,” or from “Aleph to Tav.” And Lam 5:22 doesn’t end on a high note, but with a question: “Are You angry with us still?” But in the center of our experience with Him is Lam 3:22-24, the remembrance and assurance that the Lord is faithful and gives us new mercies every morning. Yes, His faithfulness (in the structure of Lamentations, and in life) is surrounded by tragedy-and in the center of our walk with Him, He wants us to never forget that “Though he brings grief, he also shows compassion because of the greatness of his unfailing love” (Lam 3:32).
