I would never have worked that out.. its been a while since eI was in the studio, the last time however Logic 9 was just out & I remember that the LFO tool had the side chain option on instrument tracks..
I have been scratching my head as to how & why... but this explained it nicely.. cheers mate!

3:44 you mean Option? Pressing Control won't duplicate anything.

Nice one, shame it can't just be added to an existing bus without having to transfer over all the plugins. Best update my template.

Thanks Tom. Very handy. For anyone else wondering where LFOTool is when trying to add it as an instrument,, it's under 'AU MIDI-Controlled Effects' (rather than 'AU Instruments').

Yes, switching form Live to Logic, cuz why? Cuz cuz; anyways, yes, making this switch, had no clue how to do this, and this helped 👍🏼

I just bus the layers and sidechain it to a Audio kick track. Does that work? Cause im certainly not all that happy with my results, which is why im here. This is why you see a lot of Electronic music makers using audio sample drums instead of midi drums like the Drum Machine Designer. Wish they had built-in sidechain for that because I love using it but you need an audio kick track to trigger the lfo tool. I almost never see Electronic music producers using midi tracks for drums it's almost ALWAYS an audio kick track and im assuming it's because of sidechaining.

When I use this method it works, but when I try to solo out tracks, everything gets muted. Not sure why this is, any idea?

Hey Sam, you will need to solo the bus track as well as the individual track to hear the audio. Let me know if this works/makes sense

I usually just use the StepFx with the "gate mix" configuration. The enveloppe is slightly less precise and there is no display of the waveform but it does the job very well + you can add plenty of others effects and many creative options.

i don't understand why lfo tool and shaperbox dont kit you just select a side chain input the same way you would in a compressor without having to do all the complicated midi routing. this is also an issue for me when i want different release times on different side chained elements. shaperbox and lfo tool seem to be less prone to clicking and artifacts tho

Yeh I feel this. I would love it to just have the ability to trigger from an audio source etc but I think there are constraints on the inner workings of the audio systems for logic preventing for third party apps. I much prefer the LFO tool capabilities for shaping the sidechain envelope to regular compressors though.

This is a logic issue, not an LFO Tool issue. It's possible to do exactly that in other DAWs but Logic restricts how audio and MIDI can be routed.

thank u very much tom, I was havin trouble doing fx control through midi channel for glitch 2, and now I think I can do what I was aiming to do! Btw in cubase, all i had to do was simply just make midi channel and thats it..hopefully logic updates features that like that in the future

Thanks for the super useful videos! You've opened up a lot of Logic tools to me that I didn't even know I had. I'm curious: what is the advantage of using this LFO tool method vs. just using compression and setting the actual kick track as the sidechain input?

Thank you! For me, I like the absolute control over the volume envelope you get with LFOTool. I find that with the compressors I can’t quite dial in the attack and release as well and notice artefacts introduced into the sounds if I’m using too fast of a release
