Another knife attack has shaken Germany. The perpetrator used a kitchen knife to attack innocent people and take lives. This act is part of a worrying series of attacks, such as those that have occurred in Mannheim, Solingen or Brokstedt in recent years. It becomes clear again and again: failure of the authorities and political inaction contribute to the fact that such tragedies cannot be prevented.
A look at the past cases shows a clear parallel: In Solingen, a Syrian asylum seeker stabbed three people in the summer of 2022, although he should have been deported long ago. In Mannheim, an Afghan attacker caused horror at the end of May 2022 when he attacked an Islam critic and other passers-by with a knife. A police officer died of his injuries. The deadly attack on the train near Brokstedt, in which a Palestinian killed two people, also illustrates the problem. Despite having several previous convictions, he was not stopped in time.
There is repeated criticism that responsibilities are inefficiently distributed between authorities and federal states. Calls for a central authority to take over all processes from entry to deportation have so far gone unheeded. This leaves the impression that important reforms are not being consistently addressed by the federal government.
The latest events raise the question again: How many more of these tragedies must happen before the failure of the authorities and political inaction are overcome?
