Owing to the heavy rains, Karkidakam Masam is also known as 'Panja Masam' or the period of scarcity. With the fields flooded, people do not have much work to do and are solely dependent on the grains stores during the previous harvest season. Due to the heavy rains they cannot move out of their houses to earn a living.
This month is famous for dark clouds and heavy rains, and it's believed that people read Ramayana to build self confidence when the most difficult days are passing by. Ramayana written by Thunchaththu Ramanujan Ezhuthachan in Malayalam known as Athyadhma Ramayanan is read in every Hindu home in the evenings.
The holy book has to be recited facing east or north in the morning and west or north in the evening. During other hours, the ritual has to be done facing north. A devotee has to sit cross-legged on the floor while reciting Ramayana.
