    Our living room TV is from 2008. We also have an Onkyo receiver, not quite that old. It's quite impressive that our stuff has lasted this long, especially considering the obscene amounts of dust that seeps into everything.

    I'm super into home theater equipment and thus really enjoyed this video! I owned an Onkyo TX-SR605 for a good while and gifted it plus my Definitive Technologies 5.1 system to my brother but he needs to replace it with a 4K capable receiver with HDCP 2.2 and HDMI 2.0.
    I have 2 surround sound systems:
    One 5.2 system with me at college and one 7.2 at home. My 5.2 is using a Marantz SR5009 receiver, Celestion LCR (also UK brand), Polk OWM3 surrounds, and 2 12" Snell subwoofers.
    My 7.2 home system is using a less nice Pioneer VSX-1019 receiver, front speakers are my DIY Fusion 15 speakers (from DIYSoundGroup.com), 2 DIY VBSS 18" ported subwoofers, and JBL Control 25 surrounds.
    Anyways, I'm always glad when I find out someone is also into home theater stuff!

    Technics sa-dx950 receiver. Had this for for about 17 years 👌 still works a treat. Your front big speakers are similar to mine called acoustic solutions which were cheap but sound is just amazing and also bought about twenty years ago.

    We have two setups it home. The Main Lounge is a Panasonic 60" 4K 3D TV (TH-60CX700Z) Yamaha RX-V3079 receiver and a pair of Linn Keilidh speakers. The other is a 5.1 setup with Kef speakers and a Rotel receiver.

    What's more impressive is that your original PS3 has lasted this long - nearly 11 years.

      +Killacamfoo O.G. Yeah it's crazy! It came for free with our Sony TV you see in some of my videos. At the time a PS3 was about $670 AUD so this was a nutso deal. The TV is also working fine,

    My onkyo receiver crapped out on me after 4-5 yrs. A 5 disc changer onkyo stopped working after few months. Got it repaired under bestbuy warranty. My friends had nothing but trouble with his Yamaha. I'm thinking of getting Marantz now.
    Kudos on the plasma. Bet you can can get a pretty buck for that. I have 3 plasmas and 2 lcds in 2 houses. My 2003 Panasonic plasma (still running, light use thought) handily outperformed a Samsung LCD I bought in 2012. Only the LCD I bought last year compares with picture quality. Can't get over the refresh rate though. 600hz vs 60hz. Makes a big difference. It's sad that technology died. Even OLEDs I think are 120hz

    Onkyo receivers were notorious for overheating...and heat (and dust) is the arch enemy of all electronics. I had a killer 7.2 Atlantic Technology speaker set up for years paired with a Pioneer Elite, then a Denon receiver- but sold it last year prior to buying a new home. I'm now waiting for someone to release a killer soundbar/sub combo that can handle Dolby Atmos and dts-X. Sony released the very interesting HT-ST5000 a while back but it currently only handles Atmos. There is a rumor they may add dts-X in the future so if that happens I may have to invest!

    Hey nice Vid, great topic! Love looking at old tech and to have tech lasting longer than eight years is a plus nowadays considering things really aren't built to last and how fast tech changes!
    Most of my home theater is pretty new with some exceptions like my TV which is a Samsung LCD 46" 1080P TV. It's lasted 10 years! The pic still looks great but unfortunately the TV has developed problems over the last two years. Sound and HDMI dropouts are happening more frequently and I have to turn off and on the TV to reset it. So I'm in the market for something new preferably a 4K HDR HDTV. Would like an OLED but those are currently out of my budget!
    Otherwise thanks for your Vid!

    I have two forward firing subs ( left & right of front speakers), so they are kept in phase.

    LOL Yamahaha, Obvious choice for the AVR. Yes it's Class A/B but not really efficient, still decent amount heat output. I have the older Yamaha Aventage RX-A1040 because I got to testout the Android AV CONTROLLER app back in the day. It was the first time an AV company made an APP that was actually good and not frustrating. Its been updated mildly and works great. still.tore/apps/details?id=com.yamaha.av.avcontroller&hl=en
    My first big home theater purchase was the Sony 55HX800 in 2010. It's a TN LED Panel but with Localized Backlight. Big heavy chunky thing even for its time. But in the past 7 years the purchase seems very well worth it. The colour and dynamic range quality is only being surpassed by the recent generation with 12bit HDR panels. Still waiting for HDR standards to sort its self out.

    do you notice any phase issues when having two subs in the room?Also, it would've been nice to see the back of the receiver, inputs/outputs etc

    • @lachlanlikesathing
      @lachlanlikesathing  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      After calibration, the phase issues seem to be okay. 10-200hz sweep sounds mostly even with some lumps here and there. I have the subwoofer at the back of the room in reverse phase. The receiver does complain during calibration that something is out of phase (almost certainly the subwoofer) so I may experiment with another hour long calibration run :P

      you mentioned that your floorstanding Missions went down to 60hz, what would you set you sub crossover at?
      plus, there's normally a setting on your receiver for setting your main L and R speakers to small or large. Wondering how this would affect the bass response/crossover?

    • @lachlanlikesathing
      @lachlanlikesathing  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Philip Harris I set the sub crossover to max and let the receiver handle the crossover point, but if I was doing it manually I'd probably do around 80-90hz. The receiver is set to full band for the front speakers and also to pass on bass information to the sub. Sounds pretty smooth so the receiver did its job.

    I might need to replace my tv, I have a sound system, but tv doesn't have any audio outputs. No optical.
    This makes the sound system useless. TV does have 2-6 spots where it has dead pixels.
