    I'm a blacksmith and I can tell you the harder a steel is the easier it is to cut with a angle grinder. that chain I could cut a link out and bypass the lock in 30 seconds. if you want to mess up a angle grinder attack you need something soft to gum up the blade. Kevlar is very good, they use it in chainsaw safety trousers to foul the blade and it'll do the same on grinder disks

    I like the 'layered' approach. I keep my three push bikes in a quiet covered area outside the house and I use various chain and cable locks; I've noticed the covers have been moved without my permission on two occasions over the past ten years. The thieves saw the cables and chains and just walked on.
    Thieves are wary of cameras and movement sensitive lights and alarms too. They hate hassle; give them hassle!!

  • @kevmeister1702

    One other very simple little security measure i take is to cover my bikes in old sheets / blankets etc so if anyone is passing when the garage door is open they won't see any shiny new metal that might tempt them. They also won't see any of the security measures i have in place protecting the bikes so won't be able to plan ahead for what to deal with.
    A case of what the eye doesn't see the heart doesn't yearn for. It also keeps the dust off.
    I'm not sure on trackers, its a lot of expense and agg to help when the bike has been stolen. I use chains and ground anchors in the hope that i can stop the bikes being stolen in the first place. I also use a natty device which locks the brake lever closed and prevents the front wheel from moving. Its impossible to try and ride off with it in place like you might with a disc lock and is very quick and easy to use.

    Good work once again, if storing your bike for months on end take the front wheel out and chain it to the rear wheel or frame that will stop your casual thief/scum bag in his tracks, (you will need a paddock stand) it’s a bit of a ball ache but once you’ve done it a few times it’s not too much bother, I used to be able to remove front and rear slicks and replace with wets in about 10/15 mins when club racing.......and it was usually pissing down with rain to make it more interesting.

  • @G58
    @G58 4 ปีที่แล้ว +8

    Bikes are very often picked up by the handlebars by thieves and rolled on their back wheels.
    Disk locks on rear disks (as well as front) are a very good idea. Place the lock so that it’s necessary to unlock it through the wheel between the spokes. Don’t leave it sticking out in the breeze, that’s just an invitation to attack.
    Locking the back wheel with a chain and a disk lock is a double deterrent and a double disincentive.
    The best affordable locks to use with chains are good quality shutter locks.
    Link chains over the seat if you can’t get it through the frame. Never lay chains on the ground.
    Put CCTV cameras behind windows pointing at the street, as well as high up out of reach outside. They act as a great deterrent.

      My last bike was stolen by cutting through a d lock, a disc lock and a19mm chain with an angle grinder, lifting the bike out past where it was blocked in by a van and then finding and removing the biketrac tracker. The last layer of the onion is the insurance company which will pay out when all else fails (once I mailed them all the keys to the multiple security devices and the photo of the 19mm chain link cut in half). And Trevor all the personal protection in the world won't help if they do all this while you aren't there. I've chased off thieves by shining a maglite before, it's when I don't get there in time all this is needed.

    Anything you can use as a deterrent that’s visible before a thief even gets in your garage helps-
    CCTV that’s well positioned
    Garage alarm
    Parking your car up to the garage door when possible
    If you have driveway gates lock them
    Good security lights
    An electric shutter garage door (way harder to bust into)
    Also on another point keep your bikes out of view in the daytime as much as possible I wash mine round the back, plenty will scope out properties and see who has what to steal in the day.

      Magnetic Vision it’s not perfect but it’s not useless I’ve seen quite a few people prosecuted after they were identified from a cctv image. It’s also good for catching thieves vehicles and registration plates they’re not all clever enough to use fake plates. If you have motion sensing cctv that will alert your phone to thieves it speeds up the time you have to act on it.

    Some thoughts when using chains. Don't just put them through the wheel and lay the chain on the floor, thieves will lift the bike with the chain still attached into the back of their van and be gone in a few minutes.
    Chains on the floor give perfect leverage for bolt cutters, keep chains off the floor, route them through the frame, then the wheel. If you have a ground fitting in the garage fix it to the wall so the chain is off the floor when fitted to the bike.
    Chain bikes to each other through framework not through the wheels on the floor.

    • @drumbrakes
      @drumbrakes 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      PeterS, That's great advice, but hard to follow. A lot of bikes just don't have a suitable frame gap for a chain to go through. It's something I wish manufacturers would think about when they design them to start with.
      If you use a thinner chain, it's easier to get through the frame, but then it's easier to cut.
      I use alarmed disc locks in addition to chains ( or cables when travelling), in the hope that any attempt to attack the chain will set off the alarm before the chain can be cut.

    Excellent vid as always. I find it odd that people will spend the best part of 20k on a bike and then pull a face at spending a little bit more on added security. Once you have it, it will be there for any subsequent bikes, so you only buy once and is often way less that the insurance excess you'll be paying if your bike gets nicked. It should be a right faff to get your bike out and ready for a ride, time is your friend! If it takes you a few minutes to unlock your bike and remove any security, it's going to take that long, or longer for any scumbag to do the same, something they don't like. Even if you have one big lock and chain, adding some extra security in the form of a few cheap disc locks that can now be had for little money will slow them down, or better still have them thinking this is to much like hard work and have them moving on.

    Andy, great video. Well done. A few years ago I was personally targeted by a pro bike gang. I happened to pull up at home and park near to my house but not outside. My car at the time spent 99% of the time in the garage. And the gang slowly drove past me took at look but didn’t twig that the house I had seen them casing up was actually mine. They looked snide to me. I called it in and shared the intel. At the time just thought they were thieves looking for houses to target. An hour later found out they were a top gang. I then realised that I was frequently washing my bike and drying it outside and would often leave it out to dry. Clearly they’d seen it (or someone else had) passed the info on and before I knew it they were working out how to screw my house.
    As you know I’m in the other side of this trade so a number of things happened quickly, including covert stuff. But one thing that was explored at the time was who knew I had it etc. I’d had tyres fitted locally and innocently had given my name and address for the invoice on a super bike. I very quickly learned how to reduce vulnerability around identifying who knows what you have and where you are from. Happy to share some extra bits with you at some point as I ended up working on some of these thieves and really began to understand their tactics. 😮 The layers of security system is DEFINATELY needs to be adhered to by EVERYONE who watches this channel.....

    Don’t ask, but one of the channels TH-cam has recommended to me was The Lockpicking Lawyer. After watching a few of his videos you realise that all locks are pickable. It’s a matter of tools, technique and time. And it’s time that really matters. The more expensive you make it in terms of time, the less likely you are to have your bike stolen. Your bits of security kit will require a considerable amount of time to overcome, unless one is silly with the keys... This was, as usual, an excellent video and very informative. Thank you.
    Just out of interest, you did not mention a product/method such as Datatag as another possible layer of defence. Is this because you have to stop somewhere or such schemes are not value for money or that they are easily overcome?

    • @TheMissendenFlyer
      @TheMissendenFlyer  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I didn't mention all the security measures I personally use for obvious reasons! I do use Datatag too as it happens, amongst other measures....and agree, as I said at the start, nothing is completely secure, it's all about making things as difficult/awkward as possible for the bad guys...

    • @ian-c.01
      @ian-c.01 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Lockpicking is the least likely method that a thief will use to nick a bike, it's one thing to sit at home with the right tools and a bit of knowledge and pick locks successfully but it's an entirely different matter to do it at night, on you knees and under stress, in the street or even in a garage.

    Like you say layered security is the way forward. The first one is to do the same as you do and keep your bike(s) away from prying eyes in a garage or shed, don't leave them in full view of passers by. What thieves don't want to do is spend time on site as that increases the risk of being caught, making your bike less attractive to them than somebody else's is the key as they'll nick theirs instead. Like you said outside use a cover as they don't like them either, use at least 1 disc lock ( if you only have 1 put it through the rear wheel) and if possible chain your bike to something. I have a xenon alarmed one for the front and a large oxford one for the rear. Some manufacturers such sa BMW are now fitting trackers as standard at the factory which again is another layer to encourage thieves to target someone else's bike. Another option, especially if you commute to somewhere that has a bike theft problem is to buy an older bike that's not popular with thieves to commute on rather that the latest 15k plus sparkly adventure bike that'll be in a container and on a ship quicker than the time it's taken me to type this 1 fingered on my phone. It's a sad state of affairs we have to go to these lengths to protect our possessions.

    Unusually .. this is perfect timing .. I've been considering the Litelok for a while now, I shall take advantage of your generous Discount :).. Personally when I'm touring and staying in a Hotel, I use 2x oxford disc locks and a cheap alarmed one... One on each disc with the alarmed on the nearside front disc with the bike on the side stand, it goes off if it feels any shocks .. Would probably only take a couple of mins to get them off but I'd hear the alarm go off .. and hopefully they will move on to an easier target .. I have a chain but it's a bit heavy to lug around so the Litelok definitely got my attention ..

    The best theft protection against motorcycle thieves is - in the long term - 10 grams of PETN under the seat, together with remote ignition using a GSM mobile phone. Once the word has got around that many motorcycle thieves have recently come home in two halves, the number of thefts is guaranteed to drop dramatically.

      The whole point of these security measures is to make it so hard for them they won't bother. They folded my garage door in half, saw all the security then broke into the house for the keys while my wife was in there, fortunately my German shepherd put stop to that (go Roxy) and tore part the skin off his arm in the process so they nicked whatever else wasn't locked down in the garage, welder, tools and my mountain bike. I have since moved but the same security is fitted, along with some extra special custom made electrical products to give them a "stunning" surprise 😉

    • @ian-c.01
      @ian-c.01 4 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      @@rich.dodd1 Good dog Roxy !
      A lot of people weigh up their security measures against convenience of use, if it takes 20 minutes to get your bike out when you have the keys (and know the correct sequence of removal to prevent sunning surprises) it makes owning a bike less convenient.
      I live in an area that had a very high bike theft rate a few years ago, probably the highest in the country so we took some pro-active measures to reduce it. We set up a FB group to keep track of victims which grew very rapidly in a matter of weeks. Some members took it on themselves to correlate all bike thefts and attempted thefts in the area with as many details as possible. Other members coordinated patrols to track and trace stolen bikes and return them when possible and other members tracked the thieves and 'confronted' them to let them know their actions were not advisable and also followed them when they went out looking for bikes to steal.
      We also got together with local councillors who arranged meetings with The Chief of Police and local Police Inspectors and presented them with lots of information that they were not previously aware of, they were surprised and pleased that we were able to do all this and it was a huge benefit in removing a lot of thieves from the streets and cutting bike thefts down to current levels.
      Obviously this was a group effort but it was successful, by comparison there were 2 or 3 bike thefts every day before we set up the FB group and now there are less than 2 or 3 every month, that is still more than we want but it was a drastic improvement overall.. A lot of the success was down to bikers using better awareness of theft and using effective security measures too, I continually advise people on how to secure their bikes and what types of locks and chains would be suitable for different circumstances whenever I see someone in a car park or leaving their bike in unsuitable locations or anyone that asks for advice online.

I also have a camera out side that pings me if someone stands out side the garage door. I also have 2 garage door defenders on the out side. 2 anchor points with 2 locks on each bike. More if I’m away from home. Disks locks etc. Plus the bike tracker. All this is to delay time so when I get the first alarm that someone’s at my door, there’s enough time for police to arrive before they cut through everything!
