Considering that John Fullbright grew up in Okemah, Oklahoma (Woody Guthrie birthplace and not too far from Coal mining country) I can understand the connection to Coal Mines. I grew up not too far from there and my uncles and cousins developed black lung disease from working the coal mines in eastern Oklahoma.

A few years back, I goggled 'currently, who writes lyrics like Townes Van Zandt " and Josh Fullbright's name popped up. Immediately, I downloaded his music and purchased a CD. I have attended several of his concerts. Great songs and a great performer. He gives it his all.
I dont mean to sound rude, but im pretty sure it is. You can here references about the lungs of coal minors being dqmaged through coal dust, and also about the poverty that miners lived in.
This guy is definitely a better "singer" than Townes. Although, I would say the technically he brought to the singing and playing really took away from the lyrical pain of the song. It's too overwhelming and doesn't let the emotion of the song sink into the soul. Still really good though!

I don't know how much it is about coal mining so much as it is the result of a fever dream from a near fatal bout of pneumonia.
The song is about insuline shock treatment, something he underwent to cure his alcoholism (I believe) and gave him a lot of health problems
@@lucabrandalesi1265 I know that happened. Pretty sure though he wrote this while in delirium from pneumonia. That's why his lungs are collapsing.
