I've never jumped much really but I have ridden all my life. One time when I was in London I hired a horse and went riding in Hyde Park, which was splendid fun. I rode out with the two lasses who worked in the stable and they were popping over some logs. I asked if it was okay if I jumped too and they said yes so now I can say I not only rode down Rotten Row but I did a couple of jumps in Hyde Park! Such good memories and what a lovely video demonstrating some of the basics of teaching a horse to jump. Well done, Flora!
I've never just stopped and thought about all the things you've taught us. I knew horses were intelligent. But they actually have to think about things like maybe a human would think and practice a sport or piano. Animal behavior is my passion. Oh and great job Flora getting your ribbons!
Thank you! Flora loves those little local competitions, it really gets her going, and it is touching to see her put her biggest grin on for the camera! Yes, it is never really pointed out in equine sport how much of it is down to the skill of the horse, they do a tremendous job.
I like watching those too, although we'll never go up to the TV level competitions I think, the heights of those jumps are terrifying, we just want to have a bit of fun!
This was SO helpful. Flora is an absolute star of a mare. Do you have any tips for becoming more balanced while cantering a course when coming off a straight? I find we are fine on straight jumps but when we have to turn off the long side she either slows or I become unbalanced, which in turn unbalanced her. Also, do you have any tips for a mare that is nervous about fillers? When I jump a course in my lessons she is okay with just poles but as soon as she sees a filler she will back off or slow down a lot no matter how much leg I use.
Hi Amanda, Flora is the same about fillers, it is a difficult one to practise if you don't have access to a colourful course to practise with. I am lucky that Flora looks and slows but also wants to do them, she is just careful but responds well to encouragement. She did refuse one though in our last competitions because I was not fully focussed after the turn and we approach it at a slight angle...she jumped it the second time when I lined her up better. I was thinking about putting stuff around my jumps at home - doesn't have to be official fillers, as long as it is puzzling and colourful...could be plastic garden chairs, flower pots, colourful plastic bags filled with straw etc. We practised bending and tight turns a lot on the lunge line. I am lucky to have quite good balance naturally, but Flora struggled in the beginning. So I lunged her on increasingly tight circles for short periods. This might help your mare, too? As to your own balance, would you have someone who could give you a lunge lesson on a well balanced horse maybe? This would help you I think to find your balance. I don't know what height you are jumping, but if the competition is not timed, no harm to go into trot at sharp turns and then speed up again when you are approaching the next jump. Hope this helps!
@@WayOutWestx2 So Helpful thank you so much! If you ever pass through Banagher again on your trail ride be sure to message me and I shall treat you to dinner as a thank you!

Thank you, same here!
❤️🐴 Flora
I never got as far as jumping. It looks like fun.
It is great fun, the feeling of being elevated by such a strong animal over great height...you should try it sometime!
A good experience for me too.
Flora looks good with ribbons!
I think so, too, might go and earn us a few more one of these days!
How cool was that. Cheers for sharing.
A job well done
Sweet Flora ❤ Very interesting video!

tysm!
You are a fit lady, horseback riding is not for the unfit.💞
A lot of people think it is just sitting on the horse being carried around the place. They are quite wrong!!!
You don't actually grip with your knees though... a lot of non-riders seem to think that.
