I assume the inspiration for the song and the video was a true crime. In 1988 there was a bank heist in Germany (Gladbeck), after which the perpetrators fled and took hostages. During the escape, journalists conducted several interviews with the perpetrators and obstructed police work. After 54 hours of flight through almost half of Germany, the perpetrators were caught. Two hostages and a policeman were killed. The behavior of the journalists, who hindered the work of the police due to their close proximity to the events, later sparked an intensive public debate.
In the video Rammstein seems to provoke media attention by the heist, not primarely to steal money. The line "Wir wollen in Beifall untergehen." (We want to drown in applause.) indicates it. The live version of this song (e.g. Ich will - live from Hurricane Festival 2016) shows a great involvement of the audiance.

This is from 2001, 22 years ago. English and German are both Germanic languages, there are many similarities.

Some people say that the video is a reaction on the Gladbeck hostage drama where two criminals took hostage of two people and flew with a car for several days through Germany. While beeing followed by the police they gave interviews to journalists in city centers and talked to people on the street. FInally they were attacked by the police where they shot on of their hostages, a young girl.

as good as the video is, typical superd effort from Rammstein, it's the live version that I love to see and hear..theres something about 60,000 fans shouting back at Till, in German no matter where in the world..its just so special, try the version from Hurricane and you see what I mean, loved to have been there, nice reaction btw
