I will second "I Shot the Sherrif" from the 1970s. It has a reggae vibe, it's funky, and it crossed over to the R&B charts as well. The song was by Bob Marley originally.

When Clapton was started in the 60s There was a famous painted wall with "Clapton is God" in white paint that gave him superstar status, and known as king of the British Blues invasion, right after the Beatles came to the US with Pop that was incomparable.
