  • Most people think the largest pyramid in the world is the Great Pyramid of Egypt, but not many know that this title claim belongs to another.
Known as The Great Pyramid of Cholula, this huge man-made complex in Puebla, Mexico is the largest archaeological site of a pyramid in the New World, as well as the largest pyramid known to exist in the world. In fact it is the largest monument ever constructed by man.
It stands at 180 feet above the surrounding plain and has an enormous footprint of 1,480 x 1,480 feet. The Great Pyramid of Egypt is taller at 481 feet but with a base of 756 feet square, its footprint is far smaller than the one in Mexico. The volume of the Cholula pyramid is 4.45 million cubic metres, whilst the Great Pyramid of Egypt is 2.5 million.
Through the dating of ceramics and figurines found in the original pyramid core through to the outer layers, the pyramid was built in four to six stages, starting in the 3rd century BC through to the 9th century AD, and traditionally, the experts say it was dedicated to the god Quetzalcoatl.
Find out more about this enormous and enigmatic pyramid and please subscribe for more videos from Ancient Architects.

Great info layout. I'm from Puebla and didn't know a few of these things. What's worse is that Cholula is now deeply religious and would probably rage at the thought of uncovering the pyramid and getting rid of the church. Some tunnels were dug to go up inside the pyramid but left at a certain point, so one can sit in those and just be astounded and being surrounded by two narrow walls in the middle of this huge constriction. It's astounding.
The cupola of the church fell down in 2017 earthquake, but it was quickly restored.
Thanks for the explanation, more people should visit Puebla, you will fall in love.

I’ve been to Cholula. It is amazing. The majority of peoples living there today practice Catholicism and are deeply proud of their Mayan heritage and their former Aztec ancestors 2 hours away in Mexico City. They’ve managed to blend and understand that the Spanish were attempting to introduce a way of living and worshiping without the need for human sacrifice (albeit via much bloodshed). Rather than being sad and bitter, they’ve chosen to adopt the best of their histories and are a great example for all cultures, in my opinion 💕

At least the church was built on top of this pyramid, unlike where the Spanish dismantled and destroyed Tenochtitlan (including Templo Mayor) to build Mexico City Cathedral. I just wished that the Spanish empire spared Templo Mayor and didn't drain Lake Texcoco. They should've just built the new Spanish city North of lake Texcoco or somewhere else in the valley.
I mean look, the Spanish empire also conquered my country (Philippines) for more than 300 years, and we don't have ancient pyramids like Mexico, but the Spanish were still able to make cities and churches without ruins. This just makes me mad, and I feel sorry and bad for Mexicans. Even their language is replaced with Spanish which is so strange and weird, because the Spanish didn't destroy our local languages and dialects. 🤔 Every Filipino still speaks and understand Tagalog/Filipino language.
To clarify, I have nothing against Spain and the Catholic church, just their ancestors who did terrible things 😅
I'm just glad the Spanish empire didn't dismantle / destroy the Teotihuacan pyramids.

It's pre-flood mythology. There are other parallels between old and new world mythology, the flood being one of them. I used to think of it all as just stories but the idea that there was a worldwide catastrophe at the end of the last ice age is definitely supported by the parallel mythology. It's likely we lost the records in one of the many libraries that got burned throughout history. Snippets still survive but investigation of them is looked upon as pseudoscience. The history channel with its ancient aliens BS and Zacharia Stitchin with his BS interpretation of Sumerian tablets haven't helped either.

I appreciate your videos, very much, but in this one, I have to disagree with you. It's very likely that the local people see the church on the pyramid as a sacred place, and wouldn't want it removed. You should find out what the locals say and feel about it before you decide for them how they should view the church. Most indigenous people in Latin America are very Catholic, and may also be mixing their local beliefs and traditions with their Catholicism.

The Great Pyramid of Cholula is a massive ancient structure located in present-day Mexico, and it covers an area of over 4 acres. It was built by the ancient Maya civilization, and it is considered to be one of the largest archaeological sites of the Americas." wow. thanks chatgtp. never knew about this. i will not look at the pyramids in Egypt the same way ever again.

You mean the Arabs who wrote them in the 9th century AD called them by those names. All evidence says that text was written by Arabs, and the Europeans who translated it into Latin started the rumor that it was written by Hermes. I guess it's possible that the caliph Al Mamun found them in an Egyptian pyramid and somehow managed to translate a language that had been dead for thousands of years into Arabic, but that's a real stretch and isn't backed by evidence.

The Chorotegas in Costa Rica and Nicaragua are believed to be descendants of Cholula. Archaeology supports this theory as well as the language they spoke because both civilizations spoke Oto-mangue, it is a very strong theory. And the reason why Costa Rica has so many Chorotegas is because when the Nahua Nicarao people migrated to Nicaragua, they fought with the Chorotegas over the fertile lands of western Nicaragua as well as the 2 Nicaraguan lakes. After the Nicarao won, the Chorotegas were displaced, some fled south to Costa Rica but others fled east towards the San Juan River along the Costa Rican border 👍

How many people know about the very sizeable step pyramids in China ? The authorities there seem to want to cover them up and have been planting trees all over them for decades. But the biggest one has a base foot print of 1,200 ft square (yup, 1,200 ft). Around Xian there are at least 50 pyramids mysteriously built up along a geographical line measuring some 24 miles end to end, and some of the Pyramids along that line have the same 750 ft base foot print as Khafre/Giza. But most people into this general subject area have no idea about any of the Chinese ones !!
