Living with the Ocean

This film shows how people live with the ocean in Kaole, Tanzania. This community uses the ocean for daily activities, like fishing, diving and gleaning. The ocean also appears on land, through the use of tondo (sea shells) for building materials. As shown in this film, the ocean is an important part of coastal cultural heritage as well as local livelihoods. This participatory video was created by people in Kaole together with a filmmaker from TaSUBa in Bagamoyo, while drawing on research from the Swahili Ocean Worlds project, supported by the Swedish Research Council.
