Skyrim's soundtrack along with the ambience allows me to just walk around without fast traveling and not really care when I get absorbed into it. I have walked the same paths in Skyrim hundreds of times without getting tired of it. It's the reason I found out why I get so bored when playing Minecraft despite every world being a new experience and the reason is because there is no ambience, the music barely comes on as well. Good muisc, ambience, really makes or breaks the drive to continue playing.
Agree, and its so unbelievably beauftiful and perfect for the games and the way it was used. Like when you walk around in the night and suddenly see the northern lights and tundra starts playing, its pure bliss. I’ll always know Soule for his work on the Harry Potter games 😂 “Alls Well” is my favorite track on this for sure. So calming. Man I am soo overwhelmed how you can just listen to something and hear the exact chords... I mean it's one thing to listen and play the bare melody and main scale with it. (I can do that with easy songs) But finding this exact harmonies... Amazing! Hope I can learn some of that with practice... Love your content, your humor , your videos and your talent!! Thanks^^
Just do it over and over again. You'll get there earlier than you might think. Maybe start with melody first and add chords with the left hand that you think could work. Then also try only copying the bass / roots and then building chords on top. Repeat those two exercises with all kinds of songs and soundtracks. practise practise practise
@@svenhegenmusic Thank you very much^^ Yeah that's something I really like to do, and im going to practise it a lot more in future^^ Whats so difficult is finding the chords that are some how " unexpected"..🤔 But I guess one aspect is pratice, and the other a good ear too^^
@@nathanael1354 They are unexpected because you need to train your ear with intervals and relationsships between chords. once you built a decent vocabulary inside your brain, everything will just work like automatically. it's like speaking a language
Paying attention to, and learning from everything and anything is the best way to expand horizons and cultivate creativity. I love that you’re continually checking out music that you’d otherwise dismiss!
The peaceful songs from Oblivion are some of my favorite pieces of fantasy music of all time. I sometimes put them on with a rain loop when trying to take a nap or go to sleep.
Jeremy Soule’s music changed my life. I listened to the Oblivion/Skyrim soundtrack in Queenstown NZ, a place with a similar landscape to Skyrim. The music translated to the real world beautifully, and its gamefied my life, made me the protagonist, etc. His elder scrolls music is most hyped but for me his music on the Guild Wars series is where it’s at!
Jeremy Soule's work is so incredibly good. He also did work on the Guild Wars series and Neverwinter Nights which are some of my favorite games of all time.
Minor 7 chord with a major 7th [eg. C-Eb-G-B natural] is also used a lot in Bond music - I think of it as the Bond chord. It is a little like playing minor tonic and dominant major [eg. C minor and G Major] at the same time.
This game is more than a meme too. It is one of the best of its genre and is regarded as a masterwork by pundits. It's otherwise obscure in your circle, but take a step outside and smell the roses. This soundtrack plays in people's minds day in and out.
@@kevinsundelin8639 I get that it still for sure has its fans (and also its memers), but I think it is still obscured to a point, especially with Skyrim overshadowing it. But more so the music is obscured because of the memes and everyone always bringing up the dialogue. Typically the only time I hear people talking about the soundtrack is for nostalgic reasons. Which is fine, but a soundtrack breakdown from a music theory channel I think was pretty unexpected. Although, I could be wrong as it could very well just be from my experience.
@@zimripiano I’m curious, are you younger? I’m 30 and I remember Oblivion being almost as popular as Skyrim when it was in its prime. Seems like everyone was talking about it.
Amazing analysis of probably my favorite video game OST. I'd love to see a part 2 because there's so much more to the soundtrack. "Glory of Cyrodil" is one of the most beautiful pieces of music I've ever heard
This is crazy, I literally discovered your channel today and was wondering what your take on Jeremy Soule would be. And then this video popped up! My nostalgia centers more around Morrowind and Knights of the Old Republic. The latter is a big recommendation to you as a John Willians/Star Wars fans, because Soule really blends his own style perfectly with that of Star Wars (in my opinion)
The entire soundtrack is by far the best video game soundtrack imo. Might be because I played the crap out of it, but I can at any point of any day put this soundtrack on and just become mesmerized as if I never heard it before
The Halo soundtrack: somehow more mystical and majestic despite being a sci-fi space opera. Not a knock against Oblivion, it's good, but not holistically good like Halo's and other game's tracks.
funny thing is that I have been listening to Harvest Dawn (and the rest of the OST) for more than a decade and up to today I didn't knew there were memes using it. The more you know...
Hey Charles, I was wondering if you ever considered doing a video on overtones. I was watching a video of Gregorian Monks singing the Halo theme and on their third go around they sang in a way that made their harmonies create this really amazing overtone over the top. To me overtones have always been a really interesting aspect of music and I think it'd make and interesting video.
Hearing this brings back so many fond memories of my childhood and adolescence I would love a remake of oblivion with the Unreal Engine 5 . I miss that period when studios were forced to innovate, they had no choice, and we found ourselves with absolutely legendary titles. Today we can also find quality I think of The Witcher 3 but things have changed and the objectives too. The wheel turns so one day or another a great period like the one we had will come back I just hope not in 20 years. Thanks for this video !
So I've never given a second thought to 'Unmarked Stone' but after hearing the voicings on piano, it reminds me so much of the music for the Water Temple from OoT. And the empty 'wind through a cave' sound effect being tuned to that tritone interval is crazy brilliant
My god that welling up of the music in harvest dawn at 4:13 is truly beautiful. You can really feel the near death experience of Soule in it. That's the best way I've come to describe how these tracks make me feel, life, its this beautiful appreciation for life.
Jeremy soules music is crazy good for studying, or anything really. I love how it can be great background music and yet it's still complex enough to consume you.
Hey man, you should definitely check out the music from the Professor Layton games series, I think it brings a truly magic and unique atmosphere to the game. By the way, your content is amazing, I think that thanks to you I'll soon start playing the piano! You bring so much information in such a simple and pleasing format, it is always a pleasure. Have a nice week!
I got sick when this game came out and my dad let me take the whole week off to recover and play this. The music in this game was so next level. Makes me wish I could relive the past. So beautiful.
There's a track on that score called Peace of Akatosh and for the longest time I would listen to it on repeat whenever I felt anxious. These softer pieces on the soundtrack have such wonderful soothing qualities.

There's SO MUCH amazing video game music!! I really hope you keep doing more games. My favourite track on the Oblivion soundtrack is Watchman's Ease. It's short but it's really epic. The beginning gives me Legend of Ashitaka vibes :)
Yes, thank you!! I've never heard anyone else talk about Soule's near-death experience(?) during his work for Oblivion, but damn, knowing about that just made the OST achingly beautiful to listen to
I would like to recommend Donkey Kong Country music, it was composed by David Wise and he's one of my favorites. If you do check it out please listen to Aquatic Ambiance, Stickerbrush Symphony, and Forest Interlude. Just some of the most beautiful pieces of music ever made and it was made on a cartridge that only held 64 Killobits of memory to hold the whole soundtrack and the sound effects for the game
I continue to be convinced that almost all music that's used in memes genuinely has some kind of good substance to it, or else it would have died out early on out of straight annoyance
Another video-game music suggestion: Celeste. Most of the music also has official remixes used on the B-side levels, most of which are available on Spotify and TH-cam Music. It varies between high-energy electronic bops (Sever the Skyline), chill piano/string pieces (Exhale, Madeline and Theo), and places in between (Anxiety). My favourite is Reach to the Summit, which has one melody that repeats throughout, but as you get to each new landmark ascending the final stretch of the mountain, the instruments and vibe change dramatically to reflect each part of the climb.
I have to admit that I have absolutely no knowledge about music structure/theory/whatever it's called, but I still like watching these because of the enthusiasm and very impressive improv! Oblivion music is very special and definitely brings up a lot of memories. I like the meme ones, but my favorite will forever be Auriel's Ascension. This specific score playing during clear nights always made me stop and just take in the scenery and starry sky. The piano parts of it are so simple but touching
Jeremy Soule wrote the music to probably my favourite video game: Secret of Evermore. Sometimes it's just atmospheric background sounds, sometimes straight music and the rest the two mixed together. The range of that OST is fantastic for a SNES game. That was the very first time Soule worked on a video game as well.
BTW this reminds me of the game "The Longest Journey" which also has quite a lot of nice intriguing background music made by Bjørn Arve Lagim and Tor Linløkken, with complex harmony all over the place.
I'd love if you could go into the music used in the Death Note Anime. There's some simply beautiful songs in the show that made may scenes so much more impactful.
9:38 - 10:10 D natural minor (aeolian) turning into D dorian, which introduces the B note instead of Bb. And I'm assuming that the 4th chord in the dorian mode is major (edit: 7th). Am I doing this right?
There was a time where I didn't have access to the internet and I had to download the ost on my game files, all I could scrounge was Oblivion and CIV4, both amazing soundtracks.
not sure if anyone is gonna read this, but I so wanna watch Charles do one of these videos on the music of Racing Lagoon, it's just late 90's japanese perfection!
I agree, his music is superb. As far as the accusations goes - I'd rather not believe anything until I see evidence. As far as I've read, the person accusing him of his indecent behaviour is an unreliable witness with a bad record - atleast according to the Internet, which is sadly unreliable in itself, so I don't know what/who to believe in honestly. Nonetheless, such accusations can ruin a person's life, even if they themselves are innocent. So until anything is proven, I'll give him the benefit of the doubt on this one. It really is unfortunate, that his situation has limited his creativity. It is also unfortunate that people have described him as a person, with whom it is hard to work with - he's a perfectionist and one can hear that listening to his works. As far as his financial blunders with his latest album goes though... Yeah, not much I can add there, that is not very responsible.
@@Capwnql If someone is hard to work with because they're a perfectionist, then that's really an objective flaw that deserves to be pointed out so that others know to steer clear of them. Perfectionism is nothing more than a crutch for artists who think they're geniuses. It causes them to miss deadlines and treat their colleagues poorly.
Your insight is the BEST. You lead us all to things that we know/feel, but were absolutely not aware of. I love the sense discovery in all of your content. Skyrim or Final Fantasy 6 sometime in the future?? Dragonborn - Jeremy Soule .. why is it so heroic? I mean, its arranged perfectly, but what makes a heroic song sound heroic? Terra's Theme - Nobuo Uematsu .. why does it sound like such a gripping adventure? Ive been captivated by Nobuo since childhood, this song moves me to tears almost. Why?

I'm also a fan of when aerith is in the Shinra building talking about her childhood there and you hear her theme Combined with Clouds/main theme. It's super cool👌🏽
Harvest Dawn was literally the first thing I ve learned to play on piano. It s so peaceful.
I’ll always know Soule for his work on the Harry Potter games 😂 “Alls Well” is my favorite track on this for sure. So calming. You should definitely talk about the soundtracks to Myst and Riven, Robyn Miller achieved a very similar effect in that you could listen to his tracks for ages and not feel tired.
Oblivion has one of my favourite sound tracks ever, I'm so happy you're covering Oblivion(:

@PYXB3 Hahah a few of my friends do it so I've picked it up
Man I am soo overwhelmed how you can just listen to something and hear the exact chords...
I mean it's one thing to listen and play the bare melody and main scale with it. (I can do that with easy songs)
But finding this exact harmonies...
@@svenhegenmusic Thank you very much^^
Yeah that's something I really like to do, and im going to practise it a lot more in future^^
Whats so difficult is finding the chords that are some how " unexpected"..🤔
But I guess one aspect is pratice, and the other a good ear too^^
@@nathanael1354 They are unexpected because you need to train your ear with intervals and relationsships between chords. once you built a decent vocabulary inside your brain, everything will just work like automatically. it's like speaking a language
I actually use Harvest Dawn when doing long homeworks and proyects, it just works
I think it's so cool he's been covering these otherwise obscured and/or underappreciated soundtracks and bringing them into the limelight.
This game is more than a meme too. It is one of the best of its genre and is regarded as a masterwork by pundits. It's otherwise obscure in your circle, but take a step outside and smell the roses.
This soundtrack plays in people's minds day in and out.
I agree but I wouldn't call this game nor its soundtrack obscure
Real. I'v been listening to oblivion soundtrack for more than a decade now after i stopped playing oblivion and i still don't get tired of it
funny thing is that I have been listening to Harvest Dawn (and the rest of the OST) for more than a decade and up to today I didn't knew there were memes using it.
Hearing this brings back so many fond memories of my childhood and adolescence
I would love a remake of oblivion with the Unreal Engine 5 .
Oblivion ost is probably the one that stuck with me most in the series
Should look at the progression of the main theme through the elderscrolls franchise

I love oblivion, especially the music is a huge reason why i still come back to this game, even after 15 years of playing it for the first time
Oblivion music never fails to invoke an emotional response out of me. Whenever I hear it makes me want to play Oblivion again.
Very well witten. Still chuckling...
Love this analysis.
You'd love the music from NieR Replicant (remake/remaster of Gestalt)!
Specific pieces you might like:
- Song of the Ancients
- Grandma
- The Incomplete Stone
- Ashes of Dreams
- Fleeting Words
- Shadowlord
Another NieR game with great music is NieR Automata which has awesome pieces like:
- Voice of No Return
- City Ruins (Rays of Light)
- Pascal
- Amusement Park
- A Beautiful Song
damn, i was really hoping he would listen to the Wings of Kyraneth, my favorite from the oblivion OST and endlessly loopable
Same
3:21 I love when Charles starts smelling the music
I only have two words: Final Fantasy
Terra’s Theme
Aerith’s Theme
Fisherman’s Horizon
Zanarkand
So many fantastic songs.
15:52 Weally weally well witten. Say that 5 times fast XD
There's SO MUCH amazing video game music!! I really hope you keep doing more games. My favourite track on the Oblivion soundtrack is Watchman's Ease. It's short but it's really epic. The beginning gives me Legend of Ashitaka vibes :)
Auriel's Ascension is my favourite
Yes, thank you!! I've never heard anyone else talk about Soule's near-death experience(?) during his work for Oblivion, but damn, knowing about that just made the OST achingly beautiful to listen to
Jazz Musician Discovers Staying In One Key
7:20 that whole bit is so beautiful :)
EVERYTHING IS THE AVENGERS
I would like to recommend Donkey Kong Country music, it was composed by David Wise and he's one of my favorites. If you do check it out please listen to Aquatic Ambiance, Stickerbrush Symphony, and Forest Interlude. Just some of the most beautiful pieces of music ever made and it was made on a cartridge that only held 64 Killobits of memory to hold the whole soundtrack and the sound effects for the game
I continue to be convinced that almost all music that's used in memes genuinely has some kind of good substance to it, or else it would have died out early on out of straight annoyance
I work 10 hour shifts at a very loud factory. Sometimes I'll just put on the Oblivion soundtrack in my earbuds and just go somewhere else mentally.
hope you find a better place dude, these factory jobs are destroying your emotions and turn you into a robot, I've been there too
could'nt help myself but to drop a tear. what a memory this melody brings
O'Donnell. Kirkhope. Soule. The triforce of my youth.
The elder scrolls series has some excellent music, bethesda published games in general sound great in the soundtrack department
Unfortunately they're lacking in the AI department.
@@P.Whitestrake shutup dude, literally didn’t say anything about the gameplay.
I love how enthusiastic you are
7:22 actual footage of Eric Whitacre composing
Oblivion music is great and all. But imagine his take on Skyrim's Far Horizons. Best piece in all of Jeremy Soule's career.
Using fourth major chord in context of minor key is kinda mirroring using fourth minor chord in context of major key and I love it.
It would be worthwhile to do an extended review of Skyrim music.
A Charles Cornell piano arrangement (jazz, anyone?) of some Elder Scrolls music would make this music theorist cry a little. But only tears of joy.
Harvest Dawn does go for the G major earlier and more frequently. It's just quite subtle, before that big swell happens on it.
I love your content sm. It's literally exactly what i was looking for today lol. luv u charles
Jeremy Soule also did the music for my favorite MMO, Guild Wars 2. Some REALLLLY good tracks hidden inside this game too!
I can never think of memes when it comes to oblivion, I played oblivion so much years ago when it first came out I have all the 360 achievements
There was a time where I didn't have access to the internet and I had to download the ost on my game files, all I could scrounge was Oblivion and CIV4, both amazing soundtracks.
I'm so glad you showcased Bacon_'s work. That channel is an absolute goldmine for all elder scrolls and fallout stuff
I wish anyone would love me the way Charles loves harmony.
8:55 bro just sitting there like “wtf am i doing?”😂😂😂
Unmarked Stine reminds me of Assassin's Creed 2 - it would be fantastic to do a video on that game.
not sure if anyone is gonna read this, but I so wanna watch Charles do one of these videos on the music of Racing Lagoon, it's just late 90's japanese perfection!
One of the reasons this is still my favorite Elder Scrolls game.
The Elder Scrolls in general has great music. I adore the Skyrim soundtrack, myself. Pity the composer is such a [redacted].
morrowind music is the best
Y what happened? He ded? A pedo? R*pe? Kill3d people? What he do?
Has it been proven? I know about the accusations, but I don't know if there was any irrefutable proof.
A game that I love for its sound track is Child of Light. I would love you hear you breakdown the music from that game. It’s so beautiful
Why?
Charles's laugh gives me such joy, it's contagious 😂
my 2 favs are Sunrise of flutes and Wings of Kynareth, it hits me in the feel in the first 2 sec
These soundtracks are great for falling asleep. I listen to some of the long run videos here on TH-cam.
