- This tutorial walks you through drawing two simple Zentangle® patterns in the procreate app on an iPad. I have followed the traditional methods of creating a Zentangle tile but using Procreate as the medium. This video is aimed at the beginner but even if you don't have an iPad, you can follow along with drawing the pattern on a regular Zentangle tile.

Thank you so much for sharing this. Very helpful 🙏
Glad it was helpful! 💕
Thank you SO MUCH I was totally new to Procreate and I banged out a great drawing with this tutorial and now I understand layers and such. What a great teacher you are!
Thank you so much!
First lesson I’ve watched with Procreate and Zentangle and I’m inspired to give Procreate a try. Thanks for your video!
Linda Helfer I am glad you feel inspired! I enjoy both Procreate and Zentangle so it was fun to put them both together.
I love drawing tangles with Procreate. Now I know how to use the reference tool. Thanks. Great video. Easy to follow. Love the finished tile on both mediums.
Terri Young thank yo,

I’m glad this was helpful!
Your wonderful to follow alone with you, thanks 😊👌

Really awesome to see both Procreate and Zentangles transcend age. Also love how this is a straightforward and easy to follow tutorial with no random plugs or excessive life story intro like a lot on this platform. Very well done, I just have to sub :D
Thank you Anne! I appreciate your kind comments.
Very cool ✨👌🏾

Hey Tracy, this was absolutely great!! I had tried using Procreate to do a tangle once before but I didn't understand layers. Now I do! Looking forward to signing up for your Skillshare class. You are so good!!!
Thank you Karen! Skillshare is such a great platform. Once you get there, don’t hesitate to ask any questions, I’ll be happy to help.
Fantastic. Thank you!
quilter1958 Conte, you are welcome! Glad you liked it.
Great video and thank you for pointing out things like the setting for turning off if you make marks with your fingers and exporting. My question with exporting is if you send the file as an email and then you delete the file in Procreate does the file still stay in your ipad? I was mainly asking as a way to free up storage and not have so many files.
Thank you Chris! Yes, once you export your file it will stay where you put it even if you delete your original file in procreate. When exporting, be sure to save the file in the format you want to keep, I usually save it as a jpeg (picture file) in my camera roll. If you create a picture without a background save it as a png file. If you want to keep all the layers you can save it as a procreate file or even a psd file which is a photoshop file which you can then open in photoshop and keep working with the separate layers. There are many places where you can send your file. If you don’t want to store your file on the iPad, send it somewhere externally like Dropbox or google drive. If you do save it as a jpeg, this will flatten the file into one layer so if you intend to work on it again you will loose all the layers. Saving your file in an email is another alternative as long as you don’t delete your email.
Great tutorial Tracy. I love using Procreate & Apple Pencil. Wondering which version of each you are using? Also, my most difficult thing to zero in on w Zentangling on Procreate has been shading. You did an amazing job of it👏🏻👏🏻Thank you for sharing this. Now I’m off to your Skillshare 😉
Debbie Swanson thank you! I have a 12.9 inch iPad Pro and first generation Apple Pencil. I have two skillshare classes on tangling in procreate and I’m currently working on a third. I intend to gradually introduce new techniques of tangling as well as unlocking many of the great features of procreate. Of the two classes currently on skillshare, each demonstrates a different method of shading. Thanks for watching!
Thanks a lot!
You are most welcome!
Hi Tracy!
Just watched your video and have recently gotten into Zentangle. my frustration is practicing the strokes and I thought that an iPad would be an awesome solution. I don’t currently have an iPad, but I’m considering investing in one. Would you rather Zentangle on the piece of paper or with procreate?
if you are not already familiar with using procreate on an iPad then Zentangle will be much more complicated. There is a learning curve with learning the functions in the procreate app. I love using procreate and I do illustrations on it, but I prefer to do Zentangle inspired designs with pen and paper. Hang in there, with a bit of practice things will get easier.
@@TracyAnneWilkinson I agree it takes time to learn Procreate. It also takes time to learn tangles. I like the idea of practicing strokes digitally, so I don’t go through so much paper.
Thanks for the video Tracy. I followed along but got a bit confused as to the layer created for shading the pepper like tangle. I wasn't sure how to do it. And my smudge tool messed up the flux. Maybe I was using too much pressure. Anyway, I appreciate you posting and I apparently need much more practice! It was my first time trying it out.
Deb Bowyer it takes a bit of practice. The most important thing is to keep the layers separate. Check that you have the correct layer highlighted each time. It’s easy to start on the wrong layer. Because I didn’t use any kind of masking on the shading layer for the pepper, it is easy to smudge it over the flux BUT because it is on a separate layer to the flux you can use the eraser tool to neaten up the edges. Sorry I didn’t explain that part well enough. The video was very long so I tried to condense it a bit. Thanks for following along!
hi. this is so lovely design. I love drawing mandala and zentangle in procreate. I have query. you draw on 3.5 inches canvas, if want to print out on A4 sheet, will it come out as 3.5 inches sized on A4 sheet. another query is - if draw or copy and paste '3.5 inches' tile on A4 canvas (instead of 3.5 inches canvas ) in procreate, will it still print out as 3.5 inches on printer paper ?
I just need to know . thanks,
I suppose it depends on your printer. I just tested mine out. The image I printed was 300 dpi which is the same as I used in the video. When I printed it on A4 paper it filled the page so the actual printed size was about 7” square. The size of the canvas and dpi determines the quality of the print. The quality of the print wasn’t too bad. A lower dpi might have been not so good quality. If I wanted to print larger than 3.5” it would be better to create a canvas the size I want to print.
If you start with an A4 canvas and create a tile on it that is 3.5” then it should print out exactly how it looks on your canvas and remain 3.5” unless of course you enlarge it on the canvas.
I hope that helps. Before printing you should get a window which shows a preview of what will be printed, before you actually commit to printing.
@@TracyAnneWilkinson thanks a lot! Your info helps 🙂. Thanks.
@@manisha-colorcreativityartwork you are welcome!
Thank you.
Lynn Gotham, you are welcome!
I’m having trouble getting the select tool to stay on with the brush tool. I have watched that section many times and can not figure it out. What am I doing or not doing?
Hi Stephanie, try the following:
Once you hit the select button, do not then go to the brush tool, this will only switch off the select tool.
Instead… click on the select tool and use your Apple Pencil to touch closed areas on your canvas. These areas will automatically turn a colour, typically blue. it’s important during this process that the shapes are completely closed as any gaps will prevent the shape from being selected. it is also important that you don’t touch that menu in the top right hand corner.
Once you have all the shapes you need selected ( they will be highlighted blue) you can then select your brush tool. if you look closely at your canvas all the areas you selected will become clear and the other areas of the canvas will have faint diagonal lines. Now you can paint in the clear sections without having to worry about drawing on the background.
As long as the select tool is still on, you can use any of the tools in that top right hand corner, eg paintbrush, smudge tool and eraser.
I hope this solves your problem.
