SHE is sooo amazing! She is totally willing to make fun of herself. I'd hire HER over Julia Roberts ANYDAY!!! She's willing to take the piss! I love her!
When they refer to "we were there when you went nuts" that was the episode which partially inspired her being cast as Patsy, when she is in her house, then this episode was after the Ab Fab success I think!
For 20 years people have been looking blank when I tried to tell them about this GEM. Thank you, it`s even better than I remembered it. (that`s rare!) she is perfect in every way.
Ruby & Joanna are both so wonderful! This is one of my favourite sketches of all time. I don't think it matters that it takes the mick out of mental health a little - I think that's healthy actually, I've had problems in the past and I'm not offended, quite the opposite.
Absolutely love Joanna Lumley - she's fantastic in every role she plays - an extremely intelligent, articulate and wonderful woman. More recently I was fascinated by and enjoyed her 'mutual interview' with Melvyn Bragg in 2011 on a programme called 'Living the Life'. If you can get hold of it - watch it - you won't be disappointed! :) x
Here is a Promo link to that "Living the Life" episode. I couldn't open the link in the description, but the promo is interesting. How can a nose be too short for Shakespeare? th-cam.com/video/YRm3gCne-wc/w-d-xo.htmlsi=0JPL4uEOthBcmon8
I've been amused by Joanna angrily shouting at the 'cheap little tarts!' for over two decades, and now delighted at last to be able to see this again, it's still hilarious, a sterling comedy debut!!!
Its enacting a mental breakdown. Ruby Wax did good. Watching this back over 20 yrs later makes me feel a little uncomfortable. It is the birth of Patsy. It also highlights mental health issues, which Wax is all to familiar with.
No doubt Ruby wrote the sketch. She had been in and out of institutions but no one knew it back then. We're from the exact same neighbourhood in Evanston, Illinois.
Looking back on this, it was pure genius. Joanna doing it all in one take, and then Ruby's bit at the end, because that's what you do .... pull faces for other people's benefit because it's too much hard work telling them how you really feel, and they don't care anyway.
2015 joanna is in the south of france all because she appeared in this sketch show back in 1991 ad fab came her way because of this so never turn down a job
I find it interesting that Ruby sings put on a happy face to Joanna when she's losing it after hearing Ruby say that's how people reacted to her depression. still remarkably funny though.
god i STILL remember this episode and how brilliant Joanna was. so damn funny. to see it again decades later is just the absolute tits! thank u for uploading it!
I've always stuck to one thing Joanna Lumley has said: "Life is tough & strange...so there's no use in worrying yourself to death about it." Very. v. wise words uttered. (Not necessarily in that given order, I don't recall it word for word, just the general essence of what she meant).
Ruby interviewed Madonna in the 90s, ....Madonna HATED her! Ruby could tell, didn't give a shit, and carried on with her antics! It was HILARIOUS!!! And if you have studied Ruby, you KNOW she LOVED EVERY minute of it, and slagged her off afterwards! It's on the TH-cams!
Ruby didn't enjoy it at all. Ruby has actually said a million times over the years that it was the worst interview she ever did, she was so nervous that she got aggressive and it all fell to pieces. There are lots of videos here on TH-cam of her saying so.
The whole premise here is really based on laughing at mental illness. I remember watching this as a teenager, and thinking it hilarious. I really do love Ruby Wax and always have done. I wonder if any of this now seems a little exploitative to her? Given what a fantastic advocate she is for those of us who suffer with mental illness. But hey - the best comedy stimulates deeper thought and works on many levels. Love you Ruby, xxxxx
It is possible to be an advocate and be aware of mental health, while also taking a humorous comedic approach to the dissection and exploration of the topic.
Gallows humor has slways gotten me through rough patches. The Brits are genius at self parody and pointing out the absurdities of the human condition. Its why we laugh. We see a bit of our ridiculous selves in the loony characters. Brilliant sketches.
Oh Joanna. You were a successful model but you really came alive as a comedic actress. You did it lady. You are brilliant.
Right she’s perfect for comedy
Couldn’t agree more
SHE is sooo amazing! She is totally willing to make fun of herself. I'd hire HER over Julia Roberts ANYDAY!!! She's willing to take the piss! I love her!
Lumley is hilarious in this. But she's hilarious in every comedy role she's done.
Yeah I’ve loved her for years her comic timing is perfect
I'm really thinking that we've under-appreciated Joanna Lumley's acting. She's the absolute tops!!
that is just you then bore off nobody cares what you think
That cooking segment was the birth of Patsy!
Heya no I think this is before Patsy!! Isn't it? Because Ruby Wax hired her because she was "on her way out" acting wise lol
When they refer to "we were there when you went nuts" that was the episode which partially inspired her being cast as Patsy, when she is in her house, then this episode was after the Ab Fab success I think!
Georgina Lewis It says in the description that it's from 1993, though
Yes, you are correct; this IS the birth of Patsy! Jennifer Saunders talks about it in her book "Bonkers". Thanks, Ruby Wax!
@@KellieAnn71 The AbFab pilot was aired in 1992. This is from 1993, meaning Patsy Stone was already born.
"How old are you now, Joanna?"
"I'm 31."
. . .
. . .
" . . . and a half."
So good
She's so fearless. Genius!
For 20 years people have been looking blank when I tried to tell them about this GEM.
Thank you, it`s even better than I remembered it. (that`s rare!) she is perfect in every way.
Paul J ever watched Ruby Wax-interviewing Goldie Hawn, very moving, then there was the car crash interview with Lisa Minnelli OMG.
Ruby & Joanna are both so wonderful! This is one of my favourite sketches of all time. I don't think it matters that it takes the mick out of mental health a little - I think that's healthy actually, I've had problems in the past and I'm not offended, quite the opposite.

omg...her spoofing herself on The avengers was hilarious
I miss Ruby,she was a chick.Joanna looks sweet aswell.
Ruby is like every pushy stage mother haha
I haven't laughed like this is a while!! JOANNA OMG
I've been amused by Joanna angrily shouting at the 'cheap little tarts!' for over two decades, and now delighted at last to be able to see this again, it's still hilarious, a sterling comedy debut!!!
Patsy was never this unfashionable, but this is so funny. Ruby Wax is very funny and l can see why she gets credit on Ab. Fab. So funny !💜🍀💜🍀🐩
She really is perfect for comedy everything she does is hilarious
This sketch is amazing but it would never be allowed today. It's almost too cruel.
Its enacting a mental breakdown. Ruby Wax did good. Watching this back over 20 yrs later makes me feel a little uncomfortable. It is the birth of Patsy. It also highlights mental health issues, which Wax is all to familiar with.
Joanna L is brilliant, beautiful, and an utterly fearless performer. God bless her!
How have I not seen this and it’s 2019!!!!!!!!! Genius!!!!!!
No one knew just what a comic genius this lady was up until this point.
No doubt Ruby wrote the sketch. She had been in and out of institutions but no one knew it back then. We're from the exact same neighbourhood in Evanston, Illinois.
@@ToniInSussex she’s an incredibly talented lady
Looking back on this, it was pure genius. Joanna doing it all in one take, and then Ruby's bit at the end, because that's what you do .... pull faces for other people's benefit because it's too much hard work telling them how you really feel, and they don't care anyway.
What a brilliant sketch!
Joanne's performance was incredible
"Give her a job or something" Excellent.
2015 joanna is in the south of france all because she appeared in this sketch show back in 1991 ad fab came her way because of this so never turn down a job
To say Joanna Linley is a good sport to allow herself to be made fun of in this way doesn’t even begin to describe it.
She is a legend.
the genius that is Joanna Lumley is much underrated
Luckely Joanna got back on her feet with AbFab
I find it interesting that Ruby sings put on a happy face to Joanna when she's losing it after hearing Ruby say that's how people reacted to her depression. still remarkably funny though.
I think that's the whole point. Its about society's attitude towards mental health.
Holy sh!t, Joanna rolling across the car as Purdey is hysterical. 😂 I am dying here. That pretty much sums up The New Avengers. 😄
Nigella`s still doing this routine.
This is asbolutely fasbuloso!
HILARIOUS! And so brave of her! Good to see this again!
This whole skit is brilliant. Who knew Joanna could cook😉
thats where it all started
Ruby Wax ! - I remembered her immediately from 'Shock Treatment' too !
The 'Thank You' @11:03; the voice pitch-drop @11:51: Patsy Stone in the making...
Ruby guest starred in AbFab twice. The model’s coordinator at the magazine in NY and one of the menopausal women in the support group.
"Sit on a bin bag!"
Beth DeWoody!!!°
Because I'm a vegetarian.
Totally love Joanna Lumley. Brilliant comic actress.
She can play anything!!! Shes awesome!!
the cooking show! I'm aiming forward!
Its amazing how much brilliance is packed into a mere 15 minutes here
Thanks for sharing spruceroot.
Brilliant women those two.
Ruby Wax ! - I remembered her immediately from 'Shock Treatment' too !
Ruby Wax is brilliant!
The moment when she said salmon that audience laugh fucking cracks me lollll
Sums up our entire ideological system pretty accurately : )
Joanna Lumley is such a cosmic duo of British comedy & more British comedy
Joanna, you are a gem!!!🤩💚👍
Luv it❣️Joanna Lumley is Absolutely Fabulous..Ruby Wax is brilliantly evil...
This post gives me LIFE!! God bless you for posting this, I have neen an AB FAB fan for 25 years and never knew this existed!
god i STILL remember this episode and how brilliant Joanna was. so damn funny. to see it again decades later is just the absolute tits! thank u for uploading it!
This really where she reinvented herself as a comic actress. It also shows us where Ruby would head as a serious mental health advocate.
Joanna has always been very brave about the roles she plays.
thank you to ruby wax for allowing this comedy talent to shine
Sorry but the woman sounds so strange being common and not posh I could not imagine her being anything but posh 😂
Common? Where is the common?
Have you seen her in the Downton Abbey parody?
@@MsMesem the cockney
@@aveuch no ..didn’t know there was a downton parody
I honestly can't think of a better comedy actress in the UK than Joanna Lumley
Joanna an amazing gal also loved your travel on the Nile.
I'm almost sure it was completely made up for The Full Wax. This was in 93 and she has been married to her current husband since 1986.
sprucerooth no, it was all absolutely real! 👀
@@eccremocarpusscaber5159 Haha. To be clear i wrote this in response to a comment that seems to have disappeared.
On a par with Carol Burnett. She elevates Jennifer Saunders to her level.
Ive always loved this show ..so freaking funny
Thank you so much for this! X
The Purdey spoof is hilarious but 'What's the point in doing that, you're f*cking useless.' is sublime. And then the cooking sketch...comedic bliss
Joanna is a National Treasure...
she’s just lovely.
Honestly? I learned so many terrific tips from her interview this last Winter at a Women’s Event
This link is for the episode with Joanna from a year earlier. th-cam.com/video/snDMz3Uruo8/w-d-xo.html
Joanna is so beautiful
that was soooooooooo funny..........
Ruby Wax : humour at its best. Hilarious.
This is pure genius and has made my day
Actually scratch that last comment - this is actually bitingly funny.

Always class with or without wig, and able to do whatever you never expect. Supreme Joanna Luney...
Just discovered this as had emigrated. OMG Joanna Lumley is hysterically funny. This has to be the original Patsy Stone.
Love her Eastenders line!
the start of Patsy?
