  • This video showcases in-depth the White Pass & Yukon Route Railroad in Skagway, Alaska. This is definitely the top attraction in Skagway and worth every dime of the ticket price. The railroad links the port of Skagway with Whitehorse in the Yukon Territory. The railroad was constructed in 1898 during the legendary Klondike Gold Rush as transportation to and from the goldfields. From the late 1980's until now the railroad has been used as a tourist draw. If you like this Skagway, Alaska White Pass & Yukon Route Railroad video then make sure to give it a thumbs up!

    I will agree with the fact that it is, indeed, worth every dime for the amazing journey! Some of the views are breathtaking! My wife and I recently travelled on the WP&YR in the opposite direction, having boarded in Fraser, to the North, and disembarking in Skagway! What an adventure of a lifetime! Fortunately, the sun was shining throughout the entire run! We saw the beautiful scenery along every mile! No one who takes this train excursion will ever doubt the magnificence of the Yukon! Absolutely a MUST!!!!

      I googled and found this about the WP &YR explaining that it is a seasonal train. Probably little chance of additional service to Whitehorse.
      The WP&YR suspended operations in 1982 when Yukon’s mining industry collapsed due to low mineral prices. The railway was reopened in 1988 as a seasonal tourism operation and served 37,000 passengers. Today, the WP&YR is Alaska’s most popular shore excursion carrying over 400,000 passengers during the 2015 May to September tourism season operating on the first 67.5 miles (Skagway, Alaska to Carcross, Yukon) of the original 110 mile line.

    I rode that railway in 1990. I went up to anchorage for a visit, came back on a ship, stopped in skagway and road this railway. It was pretty cool. You can see down in the canyons old rail cars that were either pushed off the tracks or crashed off the tracks way down near the river. The passenger cars look newer though.

      @@markanthonyolan5598 thank you Mark, clearly the old wooden one could not last for ever, but combined with the train carriages it did give the journey a small flavour or the old west. But no Roy Rodgers, hop along Casady or Loan Ranger, ha well one can't have everything.

    I think White Pass only has one original Steamer left, And I think it's in the process of restoration. Pretty sure all of the locomotives in use are Hydro-Electric. Hydro Electric that runs on a 3' track design. It's a very fun ride, especially through the mountain pass, you can look way down and see the original route that the gold rush miners had to walk. It must of been hell, most people didn't make the journey into Yukon territory before turning around and giving up.

  • @CeecookieTV
    @CeecookieTV 10 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I took this port of call excursion in June this year. My advice - take this train excursion together with Yukon if your cruise line offer this option. Although the train ride will be one way only, u get a full day tour to Carcross,Yukon which is quite a scenic ride and views

    • @LindaCasey
      @LindaCasey 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +CeecookieTV I'm going on the Norwegian Pearl in Sept.2016 and was wondering about this. Are there different trips then? A 3 1/2 hour return trip and another one that takes 8 1/2 hours and goes to Carcross by train and back by bus? Where do you get the tickets? Do they need to be reserved ahead of time? Thanks.

    • @CeecookieTV
      @CeecookieTV 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +Linda Casey yes there are several combination of trips offered for the white pass rail journey. Specific details depends on the tour operator but the 3.5 hours trip is likely a round trip white pass rail only while the 8.5 hours one is white pass rail and yukon. If you take it, u have to transfer to a coach at the Canadian border(where the train would u turn back) and continue to carcross. The ride back is also by the same coach. I purchased my tour directly from my cruise operator Princess.

    been there, done that, Sep 2013. great ride going up, but coming down the diesel fumes can come into the cars and make breathing a little unpleasant. one thing i would recommend would be to watch the side of the tracks and see if you can find the random items placed there by crews. ask one of the tour guides, they will know exactly what i'm talking about and will probably laugh that you heard about it. took the Inside Passage cruise on the HAL Zuiderdam, cannot wait to go back.

    That's quite a ride, though I noticed the coaches weaving a bit from side to side and clacking a lot on the tracks. If the train derailed up there, you would be in quite a bit of hurt. I didn't see Sargent Preston of the Yukon anywhere. I guess the Canadians are happy that Senator Cruz is in the US, screwing with the US government instead of there messing with theirs.
