    I remember when we upgraded our $60 Costco metal bed frame to an Ikea frame with 3/4 drawers for $35. Someone bought it and it was missing a drawer front. Ikea gave them a whole new one so we bought the incomplete one. Used it for 5 years before it fell apart after 4 moves. Typical Ikea but hey it was $35!

    This is why I don't eat out anymore coz everything has trtripled, the delivery is crazy , they charge service fee and on top of that the delivery driver "expects" a TIP. They look at you some kind of way , trying to hunt for a tip, so I just cook a lot of food so I can have leftovers for the days that I don't want to cook.

    • @bingboone9474
      @bingboone9474 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Glad you don't order food anymore, if you don't want to tip, too cheap to tip or can't afford to tip, drive and pick the shit up yourself. The drivers main source of income is tips. Don't be a cheap ass. I'd egg your house if you didn't tip me. That would cost you $100's/1000's to clean up. Have fun.

      why is there only one way to eat out? why don't you just actually go out and pick up the to go order? the delivery is costly And slow. I ordered sushi one time using one of those delivery service and it took 2 hrs for me to get the food. By that time I got so hungry I ended up eating all the snacks at home and got full from that already. It was a very unpleasant dinner. To me, the time wasted waiting for food is even worse than the xtra delivery fee. Always pick up ur own food, save time and $$

    Re: house poor part - we do need to be okay not having the whole house furnished and updated and all immediately when we buy it though. I know you guys teach this but as a reminder to people we can buy things used and take our time decorating, cultivating it as we go. There is joy in that. Yes, if you have a vision of what you want and it takes awhile to find it and/or save up that can be frustrating, but it also helps with contentment. Looking back at our old pictures and seeing how our homes (both rentals and our first house) have changed over time is fun to see. Sometimes you have to take time to save up for that furniture you really want and sometimes other things happen that take precedent like a flooded basement or a big car repair, over wanted house stuff. That's okay too. The idea our generations have that we need to move in and have a perfectly picture ready home immediately, whether it's with items inside or renovations, shouldn't be the expectation.
    Also you asked for questions! I feel like FPU is missing out of the real estate lesson in a couple areas:
    1) other lessons on buying a good property and things that could easily break your bank (ie mandated flood insurance was over $3k a year- it more than doubled in less than four years and we didn't use it, nor could we unless the water rose into the first floor, which was elevated anyways). Things that could significantly change your budgeted needs for home just based on type of home or where it is... Those would be great for people looking for homes that don't get that kind of advice from anyone.
    2) Moving budget. Besides a down payment, how much people should save to buy a house. The closing costs, inspections, maybe extra money set aside to fix something right away because that's happened in both houses we've bought, a furnishing budget possibly even if it's just to buy different stools or curtains, and even an idea of how much to set aside for new necessities like an extra bathroom curtain/toilet brush/etc since you have another bathroom, carbon monoxide detectors if there weren't enough in home, rekeying home yourself, etc. Those early target/home Depot runs add up so quickly even if you're trying to stick to necessities!
    3) I love how you said home payment/escrow is the least you pay vs rent is the most you pay! That should be in FPU!! 👏👏👏 (We've taught it a few times here and this is missing.) I would also teach how much you should be saving monthly for home repairs in a sinking fund. Conventional wisdom says 1% of home value which can be a significant amount of your budget.

    My mind m was a teenager during the Great Depression. She always maintained it was far more important to have a house than to fill that house up with furniture. She wasn't saying to be house poor, merely that it was more important to own a house than to own furnishings. I'm not gonna lie, I learned much of my financial knowledge from her (and in turn, passed it on to my son).

    Growing up, I almost never was able to buy books at the book fare or order from book club. I then started overcompensating for my children. I’ve reigned it in as my children are not avid readers like I was and don’t seem to mind if they don’t get something from every book club. But I do give them some money for the fare once a year and they have to work within that budget. Seeing the footage from a book fare on here brings back memories and trauma lol.

    My x wife ran up huge debts and would argue that because she didn't have anything as a child and teen growing up, she wasn't going to go without in later life. I struggled to reason with this way of thinking and spending, while things were made worse when her friends would tell me to back off and if she wished to spend then she could. The rest is history, although it took me a good 10 years to get myself financially straight following this difficult episode of life.

    The van down by the river in 1993 wasn't a brand new top of the line model with expensive upgrades. That's the real difference. In 1993 the van was 15, 20 years old and barely ran. Which is just as affordable today as it was then.

    • @ordinaryhuman5645
      @ordinaryhuman5645 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It all falls into place pretty easily if you accept that marriage isn't a smart thing to do in the 21st century. You'll save a lot of money if you stop trying to impress th0ts and never marry one.
      Seriously. That's the #1 thing that helped me to be ready to retire at ~35. All of my coworkers are still stuck on the "work to 60+" route primarily because of this one thing.

      As someone who was literally in your same shoes….take full advantage of your current situation as much and as long as you can. Right before I turned 21, I had just landed my first real job in my chosen career path. I wanted all those things too, but a house was number 1 on my list. My parents agreed to let me continue living at home rent free while I saved up the vast majority of my income towards a down payment. I also had found someone who shared many of the same goals and aspirations as myself, including the financial ones. She was also able to live at home rent free for a bit to build up savings as well. All in all, it took about 3 years in total from the time we started saving, to the time we purchased our house.
      Based on our income, we could have purchased a much more expensive home than we expected…but we opted to try and stay as close as possible to a purchase price that would allow us to survive on one of our incomes, albeit very tightly. We also prioritized keeping an emergency fund ready at all times.
      Fast forward 12 years… We are married, raising a family, and just finished paying off our house last year. We continued to save and invest along the way as well. Now, we did choose to sacrifice a few things along the way…but we both wanted the security of a paid off house, and took advantage of our situations in order to get there as quickly and as securely as we possibly could. The biggest asset to us over the years has been learning to live on less. Now yes, there is a lower limit to where this is possible, but by taking advantage of our situation as much as we could, we were able to make our dream a reality. Had we jumped into renting, and buying new vehicles and taking trips because “we need to live it up in our 20s”, there is absolutely no way we would be anywhere close to where we are now.
      Now, would we be better off now had we chosen to focus more on investing than we did paying off our house? Probably so…but that was a risk we weren’t really willing to take at the time. The thing is that now that our home is paid off, we have enough margin to play with that I can afford to take more risks investing than I previously could have. Sure, I may end up losing in the short term…but I can do that knowing that I’m not going be affecting my family’s stability along the way…which to me is worth far more in the end!
      I will also say that these last 12 years have gone by quite literally in the blink of an eye. Set some goals for yourself that are very achievable, and then begin growing them from there. You might surprise yourself in a few years when you look back at your achievements.

      Tacos are more work though. You have to stir up the meat and there are extra steps associated with the seasoning. Burgers are much easier to neglect - just one or two flips needed.
      I guess the exception is if you're frying up some eggs to put on top of the burger, but then tacos are no longer objectively better either.
