Hello everyone! My name is Kyle, I’m the owner of the @Cruditart art page and I’m one of the students that were critiques here in the video. I feel I have the right to speak since I feel my picture was changed the most from its original state. I think everyone here really reallllly needs to lighten up. Miss Hong is kind enough to allow you all to voice your opinions in the first place by making commenting available under this video, which In itself is brave because Shes opening herself up to scrutiny. I’d like to make a point of saying that in her Skillshare class miss Hong says that she encourages all to give her method a try but only as a launching pad off of which to build your own technique. If you come to see a video tutorial by a certain artist, it’s reasonable to assume that it’s because you like that artists style. You want to pick up on their technique. It’s only reasonable for miss Hong to assume that if someone decides to watch a tutorial on how to draw in HER style, they must want to draw in a style similar to hers. In this video, she simply goes through and puts her own spin on things! And much of it isn’t even anything specific to her style. It wouldn’t be fair to say that deepening values is making the drawing her own. Sure she May have shaded the noses in more than certain of you May care for, but if you don’t like it, don’t do it! If I watch a Gordon Ramsay MasterClass in cooking, I have to be prepared to see dishes prepared to his taste. Now if I don’t like thyme, or rosemary or cracked pepper, I’m free to leave it out! But I wouldn’t bash him for changing a dish to his taste, especially when his taste is much more seasoned than my own! I for one, as someone who’s drawing was changed the most among the four think miss Hong did an exceptional job and I continue to support her!

I have only read your comment and no others; tho I understand how there are neigh sayers all over the web & it's a reflection of the commenter & not of the artists tho. One must have an impervious skin to put oneself out there & I'm so grateful for being able to view this video & others like it! Super educational, I love it!
That is definitely much harder to do..! I think then you just have to break down planes of the face and actually figure out how light would affect the forms of the face (figure out which planes is in light, and which planes are turning away from the light and therefore darker). The key is to keep it CONSISTENT and make sure if you design the shadow shape going one way, let's say the cast shadow from the nose, then it has to be consistent and match up with the direction of the other shadows ^^
Take that baby in to a photo editor and blast up the contrast. Have the unedited close by to make sure you dont go to ham, but it will help clearly sperate the values.
xXPandaGalaxyXx yeah, but then you aren’t learning the plains of the face. This is crucial knowledge for an artist! Study it and give yourself a few years to grasp it. Also study how to create shadows of buildings cast by the sun. It’s a very simplified way of learning lighting because buildings are boxes and sunlight is one strong direct light.

In my own drawings, i definitely tend to see hair as confusing strands and lose focus on what I am drawing, SO seeing you focus on shape and value really solidified in me what to look out for in my own art. THANK YOU!!! P.S. Your art really keeps me inspired to keep on creating, thanks a ton for the video!
(NOTE: This is NOT a hate comment!) As a painter I just wanted to remind that black-gray-white drawings don't only depict values made from shadows and light, but also tones and values created from the convertion from color to black-white. So, if the highlights are emphasized by darkening the surrounding values, it will read to the brain as a darkening of color as well, not just shadow. Certain areas are a little dangerous, when it comes to this. One being the nose. When the areas around the highlight of the nose is darkened to emphasize the highlight, it reads to the mind also as darkening of the implied color, and for the nose that would typically be red. Too much value around the nose in black-white therefore easily reads as darker red, which can make the person look like they have caught a cold. The same goes for the hair. If the hair is a fair blond and therefore competes with the light on the skin, the darkening of values should not necessarily be on the hair, but on the skin, because the skin typically will have a more muted and therefore slightly darker gray tone than the blond hair, whereas the hair will show as a darker color. I am not saying that it is a problem here, I just wanted to remind people that darker values don't just depict shadow but also color (even if the drawing/photo is black and white).
I think the darkening of the nose is a fashion within this type of illustration, so many people do this currently , sometimes it looks cute , other times they look ill or worse a drinker
Found this very informative, although you really didnt have much good to say about the first portrait even though it already held many important techniques. Positive reinforcement could have been encouraging to the artist.
Her eyes were popping more before, gave her a more innocent look. With all the shadow on the eyes afterwards it looked more like someone with heavy eye make up
When I was in art school, this was how it was. It’s not something you take to heart but more of just learn from (: they are positive critiques! It’s peoples opinions , and critiques and what they think! Everyone is different. I don’t think shes trying time being down the artist at all, and I heard a couple of compliments. And I’m sure they get compliments often 😌
Fantastic video although u darken the bulb of the nose too much to the point where it looks like a deformity I would recommend you go with lighter values on that area
I don't think the way Chris handled the first drawing was the best way. The author said she was inspired by the striking eyes of the photo, so normally the handling of the drawing should have gone to the "popping out" of the eyes (similar to the thrid drawing). At the end, the eyes were pretty drowned out. Chris focused a lot on marking the shapes, so I guess she didn't care that much about the eyes of the first drawing for the lesson. The rest of the drawings resulted incredible though. Chris is really talented and professional with her critics.
Yhea, I thought the same thing! I loved what she did with it, and she gave some really solid advice. But I feel like the eyes were really radiant before, and after the just felt a bit dull instead of popping out.
no bruh she was getting rid of the things she considered distracting, but also improve the sections that were distracting(or taking the focus away from the eyes).
@@akkoXD Ngl I liked it. It could just be me It wasn't too busy, the eyes are still the first thing you see. Nothing is really distracting you to see those eyes, I think it just fits more into the picture. Maune I'm just the type of person who will always lead up to the eyes first
I feel like most people criticizing this video didn’t actually watch the class - obviously the critiques she makes are related to the class the students participated in when creating these, not just completely general, ‘subjective’ tips. Also important to remember these people wanted critiques, she didn’t just decide that these ppls art should be changed, these ppl wanted her comments on work created when trying to use the techniques she taught them.
@Flávia yeah sure! The tips were useful and it's a good lesson! I just don't like how she changed the drawing because I think it looked great before, for my personal taste
A really interesting exercise. First I'd like to say thank you to the people who agreed to submit their work for review. That takes courage. Like some commenters below, I too have a problem with the nose shading. While I realise this is Chris's style, I don't think it fits quite as well with these drawings. Also, the third drawing was really good after the first editing, but going back to it resulted in the image being overworked. It was also the only drawing in which I thought the nose worked in the initial edit. Overworking an image is something that I am constantly vigilant about. Great video, very instructive and generous of you to share with us, Chris.
When I look at the thumbnail, in general her new version of the first drawing looks more solid and better in general but the nose really sticks out being overly dark. Also I think I prefer the third one before she changed it. I really enjoyed hearing about the tips about light and value though.
PeachuePie Arts I get where your coming from but I feel like it gets to the point where it obstructs everyone from thinking it’s a “perfect” piece. It ends up looking like she’s got a flu or smt and changes the subject of the picture as a whole

These are so nice! The tips of making the focus to the face instead of the hair is great as well, although I do find that my focus goes to the nose; they look like red noses haha
I admit I might have gone a bit far with them, mostly to drive home the point about how the highlight of the nose has to be against something darker XD thanks for watching!
Chris Hong Art Haha I actually found it super cute to be honest! Though I have a genuine question! So I’ve been doing many art mistakes and you say to create more geometric shapes but I’ve never thought of doing that since my style is more cartoonish/anime than realism. But I assume shadow casting over certain parts make it look geometric shape? Not sure since I don’t study portraits or anything /: but I’d love to know your input on that! Because when you did it, the drawing became waaaay more realistic than not doing a geometric shape
@@andrewaguayo115 Try using sharp lines instead of soft ones and see how you like it. You can switch(use one fully) and even use a mix of soft and harsh lines for you art. Good luck, I hope I could help.
I might suggest rather than drawing over the artwork, you can use the old practice of using tracing paper over the art and make your comments there, and flip back and forth to show the differences. This doesn't lend itself easily to the contrast / lighting adjustments. though. Just a thought. Maybe some notes on the basics of modeling shapes; chiaroscuro, darkest dark/lightest light, cast shadows and reflected light as they apply to the complex shapes of the face. That may help to clarify the "why" a shadow is too dark or a highlight is too light.
I need to point out that I watched the full video. Like, I clicked on it and started watching and 20 mins later I realized I wasn't even in the middle of the vid, and when I checked the time and saw it was 1 hour, oh well... Let's just watch it all and learn cuz I have nothing else to do right now -_- This actually helped me a LOT
The thing about evening out values and being more subtle in the shadow shapes so they don't compete with the focal point because there's toomuch detail and contrast is really helpful. Thank you. I really should practice that.
Love your critiques and art style but the nose makes it look like the model has a cold, I know that the main goal isn’t to look as accurate as possible but it muddies the shape of the nose.
I love her art style but I definitely agree about the nose. It also to me feels like she's lost the sense of depth in the face because the nose should be one of the brightest spots in most basic lighting types for a picture. Cutting back to drop shadow on the neck in the first drawing also messes with the depth perception because it looks like the hair isn't casting a shadow anymore. It's kind of me thinking "That looks really nice but it doesn't seem logical to me".
I definitely liked it before she made the nose. It looks off and really not pleasing. The before and after are completely different. The before relies more on the picture, but the after is just... Nah.
She is very talented but the original first drawing looked nicer to me. Guess art really is subjective and even the "correct" techniques aren't always best.

@@dainah105 making the nose tip this dark isn't technological correct, also leaving the shadow from the neck, isn't. You can cleary see that the light comes slightly from above, so there should be shadow
@@dainah105 If this was suppose to be technically correct, the noses should not have been so dark, unless you're seriously going for a "been rubbing nose all day from being sick" look.
I definitely think that some of these tips are dependent on your own artistic style. I, personally, wouldn't have strengthened certain features by using harder lines since it takes away from the softness my style likes to emphasize. But this was a really interesting video to watch - I haven't seen someone draw over another person's sketch to edit it before!
I disagreed with blocking out the light in the hair on the 3rd drawing. maybe very lightly shade so its not as striking as the highlight on the face but don't completely take it out. Hair reflects light too so if the source is coming from that side then the hair should show that as well given the hard contrast on the face
Idk, I think that’s just how it comes across bc of how she draws bc it’s... her art style. The notes of value and shape and focus are valid and important
Yellow Beret but the fact is that it’s her art style and that’s why she’s enforcing it on the originals. it’s not improving them a lot, it’s just modifying them to her own tastes. no hate though, she’s a good artist.
i agree that she’s adding her art style to the drawings, but i think she does modify the lighting and shadows to be more realistic. this can help teach others who have the intention of creating realistic portraits.
I really like how you didn’t change the shapes completely, like when a neck was too wide or something else, you didn’t change the shape, you mainly focused on schadows and highlights which is really helpful
i think theres a difference between fixing a few things and just completely changing the art style. There were a few helpful tips but i think it's sad that the things that made the art of your students unique and special (since everyone has a different style) were changed aswell.
yea, like the addition of straight lines?? i felt like that's just a stylized choice, not a "correction" per se. it looks nice, but the art could have been left as it was already, because it gives a unique style to it
The students made great submissions to your skill share class! Your tips and corrections are so helpful in learning the actual techniques and concepts behind portrait drawing. I think it helps balancing the overall composition, some straight lines can make a lot of contrast in a round/soft piece. But honestly I don't know if that makes sense lol
Oh, um, usually when drawing organic forms (people, animals, etc.) circles are usually avoided. They tend to look inorganic or just unnatural. It also helps with composition and such. Obviously that’s a purely stylistic choice, but I’ve noticed it is a common technique when drawing organic forms! :)

This was wonderful to watch, I always learn so much from watching a teacher critique mine and other student’s work, instead of simply starting with a blank page. I really like the way you use straight lines to help emphasize/ define the plans of the face through shadow, I’m gonna have to try that out with my own portraiture.
it’s interesting to see the changes made and while i agree with a lot of them, the darkening of the nose seems a bit too stylized? Like i can tell the reddened nose is something that might be consistent in your own work but i’m not sure if it went with the style of the other portraits
x'D honestly you may be accostumed to drawings with pastel colors and such, watercolors without much value range, etc. cause you do wanna leave shadow areas generally darker in that "same dark gray". people tend to be scared and just gravitate towards puting the same lights and highlights everywhere, no matter if it's the shadow side or not, and it looks cartoonish.
I disagree, she didn't leave their style or any of their stylistic elements, she changed it to her own. Which isn't what a teacher is supposed to do. This is a very tumblr instagram style of drawing as opposed to being a realistic drawing. I don't think she necessarily improved any of the work or showed any demonstration of actual techniques. She just warped them into her preferred style, and making students copy your style isn't the purpose of teaching. And she didn't demonstrate much understanding of tonality, she adds the same uniform grey all over the piece as opposed to adding any dark darks or bold highlights. In the third piece she takes away from the drawing by making the face really harsh and masculine despite having the reference image where you can clearly see that the facial features are soft and roundish.
I think this video was really informative for lighting and shape choices. I do think the faces did change to your style, I think it was mainly the nose like you said in the video. But people taking your class are learning to do your style choices so I'm not seeing a big deal of the drawing over part. I do hope to see a side by side comparison. Thanks for making these videos! 😊
it's interesting how in the first drawing, before any modifications, the eyes look to the side, but after modifications, they seemed to look at you. Maybe slightly, and maybe my hallucinations, but it felt like eyes were shifted.
The first one is amazing and I personally think their is a point where you can over work something but yeah amazing video you are very good a critiquing

I absolutely adore your Skillshare class! Its exactly what I've been looking for and definitely the best on Skillshare. I've taken many online courses, and a college Figure Drawing class, but I always feel like I'm not actually being taught the fundamentals, or that something vital is being left out. What I noticed immediately watching your class is though I've heard the terminology you use (blocking in, using shapes etc) you actually show step by step HOW to do it! You show exactly what you mean and that's VITAL. I feel like I can finally take that big leap forward in my art journey because of your class. I can actually see what I've been doing wrong!!!! I know this is a huge and monumental ask, but please tell us your planning a figure class, or at the very least a course on gesture? You are an AMAZING art teacher!!!!!!!
aww I'm so thrilled to hear how much you liked it!! and I'm not sure if I'll ever feel confident enough to do a FIGURE drawing course, I feel so rusty now since I haven't done life-drawing in so long haha. But gesture drawing is something I might consider doing in the distant future! 😁
11:55 you darken the hair and then 15:11 you add light ?? very confusing but overall I found it helpful to hear your toughts of drawings so I learned a lot !
I found you making suggestions about already made work really helpful! These drawings were really great to begin with but with ever so slight changes, they become even more effective. I would’ve never really thought about choosing shapes that enhance focus on the face rather than choosing generally interesting shapes.
This is a really cool concept - it really brings out that old saying, that art is a conversation, with this being two different artists taking the same drawing in their own direction.

Some of her techniques and advices are valid and makes sense, but the rest of it seems unnecessary and overdone making the picture look quite muddy. Also it feels like she is completely changing the art style and not improving it. And the nose of all the drawings is overdone too.
This was so interesting to watch!!! Youre so methodical and practical about the adjustments you made to each piece, it was really nice to see your thought process about how to literally design the lighting and structure to improve the imagee, it really makes me think about how I can improve my pieces! thank you ;D!
The reason you have so many comments regarding the dark noses is because you are a teacher and are teaching your students incorrectly when it comes to the values on the noses. They are far too dark. Not just a little bit too dark, but incredibly dark. If you stop the video at 55:34 there is a comparison photo that the student worked from as a reference. Honestly, can you not see how the altered drawing on the left is so very wrong? I feel that you have made some big mistakes when it comes to correcting your student's work with regards to value. You are also drawing straight lines where there are NO straight lines. A shadow will make a straight line, the top of the lips may be straight, but the nose has virtually no straight lines and yet you have altered your student's work with straight lines. Why? I feel that you have removed the charm and individual style from all of the drawings. You have imposed your own style and whilst that may suit your own drawings I think you have done these an injustice by your alterations. So much so that any "good" advice is ignored due to the way you have removed the character from the originals.
If you are interested in why some artists use straight lines in noses I feel like the video sinix designs did on noses could help you understand why she made those choices. :)
There are some good tips and pieces of information to gain from this video, but it seems clear to me that critique is not something you are familiar with giving. There are a lot of unnecessary changes made seemingly to satisfy only your preferences, given without solid advice alongside them, or things that were done very experimentally with a "well let's see what happens" kind of attitude. I feel it would be best to keep each critique to a couple of strong points and not stray too much from those. Try to support more what the original artist intended, as well, rather than running away with your own ideas. Keep the integrity of the artist intact.

I feel like if you submit your art to be painted over you actually want big changes. I don't see the point in only doing two or three things. Most commenters look at it from a perspective of personal preference instead of how much the student could take away
@@mjrhmekssh What? If you're a student, presumably paying to learn how to create art as you envision it, why would you accept a teacher who doesn't value your takeaways from the exercises? That's a cool story though I guess. She's undoubtedly a talented artist, but if I wanted to see how she *specifically* draws, I would watch almost any of her other videos. Or this could have been a video of redraws rather than being advertised as tips and advice for her students.
While some of the things she did made since and show how you should be thinking about values (light sources and etc,) she took away most of the things I liked about the original drawings. Also she didn't explain why she did some things. Like she often made shapes on the face more geometric or "straight lines" rather than curved. Why?
I think it has to do with defining the shapes. Since the video has too do with her portraits class ( she said the class addresses anatomy and shadow and light values), I think she focused on correcting the drawings with that in mind not the originality or other stuff since for example for a teacher when evaluating a project abt shadow and light values they will focus on that in particular. Not the other stuff that for example you might have liked better on the drawings.
Becoming an art teacher to semi-professional artists is an easy job to get nowadays because of youtube. Just because someone can draw nice pictures doesn't mean they can be good art teachers. Most of her comments were generic and not concise. Artists need to be careful who they pay to teach them about anything.
I don't know. When I first started watching I was like, "Yeah, she's giving tips to follow the foundations in drawing." Then as it went on, I just noticed that there was a lot of points or changes she made that came from her own personal taste, especially the last one. The last drawing, the student never mentioned if she wanted to draw the portrait in their own personal style, but Chris assumed so and kept it so. If the tips for the portrait drawing were towards drawing portraits straight from life, that's not what this video was. It was a video critiquing work based on what aspects of foundations Chris prefers plus her own personal taste.
i mean, if she were to "fix" that drawing she would need to start over, cause the eyes are way too big, the forehead should be lower/bigger, the mouth should be a little bit smaller and definitely go further up the face and closer to the nose. Honestly i think she was just being nice lol. cause otherwise that drawing is wrong from the very foundations. and well, this is what she said in an indirect manner too lol.
Dude, the hate people are throwing to a woman who has one of the best art channels is insane. It's not the first time we see "it looked better before" comments on drawing over videos but I kinda took for granted that they'd have a bit more respect to the f* Chris Hong. People just go at anyone on the Internet theese days. I'm curious to know who theese people are and what do they do in their lives to back up their cruel statements. Besides, most of the things they're saying aren't even true. She was respectful with her students' decisions, she just made those decisions stronger and explained how, she didn't even change them. And she definately worked like the pro she is on the one that looks completely different in style to hers like "go with this, this is your style, it's ok, just pay attention to this and that". If that's not what a good teacher says, I don't know what it is. Also, she could as well not post this video here. I'm nothing but thankful, honestly. And she's not being defensive: she simply doesn't have to smile and nod to whatever thing a nobody feels like saying here. Please excuse me if my english is poor. Keep it going, Chris
haha I appreciate your comment and your English is perfect! I don't get bothered by a lot of comments (used to it by now XD) but I agree, I think there's an upward trend of leaving fairly accusatory, and inflammatory comments guised as some kind of bulletproof "opinions", and being told to just say "thank you for your opinion" as if we shouldn't question its validity is just flagrantly wrong and not something I stand for!

I really learned a lot from this. To me it was very effective to hear your thoughts behind the adjustments you applied to the drawings. Seeing the results of the changes was also very immediate & helpful. I loved it. Thank you to your students also for sharing their work for the video.

I think this video shows the importance of an honest critique. It helps the artist improve. As someone who has gone through an art course at a university, I know it's important to respect the opinions you get. This is the point of putting your art up for a critique. But its also important to receive everything with a critical mind as well. Think about the critique you received, don't blindly take it or reject it. THINK. Ponder. Experiment. Understand what the changes made to your original design bring to the drawing. If a teacher changed something you are really passionate about in your design, stick to your design, but try to understand WHY you're doing it. Ego is a really hard thing to get over when you're in this stage of work, but it's worth it. As it's also important to know that, sometimes, your teachers are wrong, maybe not entirely, but they CAN make mistakes. If you're unsure about a critique if there are TOO many changes if it doesn't feel like you anymore, get a second opinion. Even if you're not unsure, get a second opinion, it will only enrich your work. Your repertoire. Personally, I wouldn't make all the changes she made. Some I agree with, others I don't. I would make other choices, but I respect the fact that she is making choices from HER point of view. I think that seeing their work put to such scrutiny certainly gave the artists a lot to think about. As always, I loved listening to Chris talk, I love her work, especially her colors.

So generous of you to do this! Paintovers are by far the best way I learn, you can only verbally describe so much before you lose stuff in translation. Also I'd love to see a skillshare class about either simplifying and stylizing reference to make it cartoony, or about painting with gouache!
this was very interesting and informative! i must say though that for me, sometimes the weird or not really realistic spots and stuff make a drawing more interesting and fun
People dont understand that your showing grate realistic techniques. Your not "fixing or making it better" ur showing off what you can add and how to improve your art. This video was fucking wonderful.

I appreciate you critiquing the pieces but the only one I cannot agree with are the straight lines in the nose and addition of geometric. These are more stylistic choices rather than fundamental technique. I feel like you muddied up the shape of the lips as well and lost a lot of the contrast in the face in general. I really appreciate you doing this though.
@Alex Fülle, I agree with you. It's okay when she does it because it's her unique style. But when all her students begin to copy that nose or (even worse) when she changes other artists' drawings of noses into her "recognizable" style, then it gets to be too much. I really think the first nose looks like a clown's and the second one like an alcoholic because the girl's face is so pale. @@justtubingby129 The noses are what is really troubling to me. It gives them a cartoonish character, which is fine if you are drawing that way, but for straight portraiture it does grate a little. While it kind of works in the first drawing (although I agree with you it makes the whole image a bit clownish), it absolutely ruins the lovely geometry of the second drawing.
Even your sketch lines, clearly made with so much ease... Self doubt for me is my own jailer and keeps me from being confident or even comfortable enough. I have enjoyed drawing for even my own meditative reasons some which I don't fully understand but it's truly frustrating when it seems like I might or probably won't develop a "style", or learn to properly create the illusion of depth through light and dark tones, proper or correct foreshortening as well among other things any skilled or semi skilled arts person should have some degree of understanding. You are incredible Chris, thumbs up, and keep up the greatness you create in such a natural way.

This was such a great and informative video! I just had to comment since I saw people complaining but... the fact that you went this far into working on their work is so helpful. I don't see how anyone could complain that you put MORE time into giving that many more tips and advice as you draw over it. In art school, I found that you would be lucky to even get 5 minutes of a professor's time so it's obvious whether more critique or less critique is better!? And I thought you were actually super nice in consideration with style. I personally don't understand the gripe with style, the point is to make it better fundamentally regardless of style or "OVERDRAWING" someone else's work, which is... THE POINT?
Thanks Joanne, I honestly didn't expect to upset some people when I uploaded the video!😂 I got the idea for it since I was frustrated that I was leaving very long feedbacks to students' assignments but not being able to actually DEMONSTRATE what I meant. I thought it was a really great idea actually, that this video could serve as an extension to the class that students can refer to to help with their own drawings, and also be accessible for people on TH-cam as well. I also don't understand the whole thing about style, as an artist I really don't even give "style" much thought anyway. I'm just happy to see most people are finding the video as I intended it, which is to be helpful!

In the first portrait the light is not coming from the right. It is from the left. You can see from the shadow of the nose, the highlights on the shoulder area.

Hello everyone! My name is Kyle, I’m the owner of the @Cruditart art page and I’m one of the students that were critiques here in the video. I feel I have the right to speak since I feel my picture was changed the most from its original state. I think everyone here really reallllly needs to lighten up. Miss Hong is kind enough to allow you all to voice your opinions in the first place by making commenting available under this video, which In itself is brave because Shes opening herself up to scrutiny. I’d like to make a point of saying that in her Skillshare class miss Hong says that she encourages all to give her method a try but only as a launching pad off of which to build your own technique. If you come to see a video tutorial by a certain artist, it’s reasonable to assume that it’s because you like that artists style. You want to pick up on their technique. It’s only reasonable for miss Hong to assume that if someone decides to watch a tutorial on how to draw in HER style, they must want to draw in a style similar to hers. In this video, she simply goes through and puts her own spin on things! And much of it isn’t even anything specific to her style. It wouldn’t be fair to say that deepening values is making the drawing her own. Sure she May have shaded the noses in more than certain of you May care for, but if you don’t like it, don’t do it! If I watch a Gordon Ramsay MasterClass in cooking, I have to be prepared to see dishes prepared to his taste. Now if I don’t like thyme, or rosemary or cracked pepper, I’m free to leave it out! But I wouldn’t bash him for changing a dish to his taste, especially when his taste is much more seasoned than my own! I for one, as someone who’s drawing was changed the most among the four think miss Hong did an exceptional job and I continue to support her!

I have only read your comment and no others; tho I understand how there are neigh sayers all over the web & it's a reflection of the commenter & not of the artists tho. Could you possibly do a video about finding the shadow shapes in photos with low contrast?
That is definitely much harder to do..! I think then you just have to break down planes of the face and actually figure out how light would affect the forms of the face (figure out which planes is in light, and which planes are turning away from the light and therefore darker). The key is to keep it CONSISTENT and make sure if you design the shadow shape going one way, let's say the cast shadow from the nose, then it has to be consistent and match up with the direction of the other shadows ^^
Take that baby in to a photo editor and blast up the contrast. Have the unedited close by to make sure you dont go to ham, but it will help clearly sperate the values.

xXPandaGalaxyXx yeah, but then you aren’t learning the plains of the face. This is crucial knowledge for an artist! Study it and give yourself a few years to grasp it. Also study how to create shadows of buildings cast by the sun. It’s a very simplified way of learning lighting because buildings are boxes and sunlight is one strong direct light.

In my own drawings, i definitely tend to see hair as confusing strands and lose focus on what I am drawing, SO seeing you focus on shape and value really solidified in me what to look out for in my own art. THANK YOU!!!

(NOTE: This is NOT a hate comment!) As a painter I just wanted to remind that black-gray-white drawings don't only depict values made from shadows and light, but also tones and values created from the convertion from color to black-white. So, if the highlights are emphasized by darkening the surrounding values, it will read to the brain as a darkening of color as well, not just shadow.
Certain areas are a little dangerous, when it comes to this. One being the nose. When the areas around the highlight of the nose is darkened to emphasize the highlight, it reads to the mind also as darkening of the implied color, and for the nose that would typically be red. Too much value around the nose in black-white therefore easily reads as darker red, which can make the person look like they have caught a cold.
The same goes for the hair. If the hair is a fair blond and therefore competes with the light on the skin, the darkening of values should not necessarily be on the hair, but on the skin, because the skin typically will have a more muted and therefore slightly darker gray tone than the blond hair, whereas the hair will show as a darker color.
I am not saying that it is a problem here, I just wanted to remind people that darker values don't just depict shadow but also color (even if the drawing/photo is black and white).

I think the darkening of the nose is a fashion within this type of illustration, so many people do this currently , sometimes it looks cute , other times they look ill or worse a drinker

Found this very informative, although you really didnt have much good to say about the first portrait even though it already held many important techniques. Positive reinforcement could have been encouraging to the artist.
Agreed. I also thought a lot of the added shadow on the eyes and lips took away from the portrait as well, though that is just my personal opinion.
Her eyes were popping more before, gave her a more innocent look. With all the shadow on the eyes afterwards it looked more like someone with heavy eye make up

When I was in art school, this was how it was. It’s not something you take to heart but more of just learn from (: they are positive critiques! It’s peoples opinions , and critiques and what they think! Everyone is different. I don’t think shes trying time being down the artist at all, and I heard a couple of compliments. And I’m sure they get compliments often 😌

I don't think the way Chris handled the first drawing was the best way. The author said she was inspired by the striking eyes of the photo, so normally the handling of the drawing should have gone to the "popping out" of the eyes (similar to the thrid drawing). At the end, the eyes were pretty drowned out. Chris focused a lot on marking the shapes, so I guess she didn't care that much about the eyes of the first drawing for the lesson. The rest of the drawings resulted incredible though. Chris is really talented and professional with her critics.
Yhea, I thought the same thing! I loved what she did with it, and she gave some really solid advice. But I feel like the eyes were really radiant before, and after the just felt a bit dull instead of popping out.
Yeah I totally agree I feel like she made the face stand out as a whole but the eyes just kinda blended with the face a bit....if u get what I mean
no bruh she was getting rid of the things she considered distracting, but also improve the sections that were distracting(or taking the focus away from the eyes).

I feel like most people criticizing this video didn’t actually watch the class - obviously the critiques she makes are related to the class the students participated in when creating these, not just completely general, ‘subjective’ tips. Also important to remember these people wanted critiques, she didn’t just decide that these ppls art should be changed, these ppl wanted her comments on work created when trying to use the techniques she taught them.

A really interesting exercise. First I'd like to say thank you to the people who agreed to submit their work for review. That takes courage. Like some commenters below, I too have a problem with the nose shading. While I realise this is Chris's style, I don't think it fits quite as well with these drawings. Also, the third drawing was really good after the first editing, but going back to it resulted in the image being overworked. It was also the only drawing in which I thought the nose worked in the initial edit. Overworking an image is something that I am constantly vigilant about. Great video, very instructive and generous of you to share with us, Chris.
When I look at the thumbnail, in general her new version of the first drawing looks more solid and better in general but the nose really sticks out being overly dark. Also I think I prefer the third one before she changed it. I really enjoyed hearing about the tips about light and value though.

PeachuePie Arts I get where your coming from but I feel like it gets to the point where it obstructs everyone from thinking it’s a “perfect” piece. It ends up looking like she’s got a flu or smt and changes the subject of the picture as a whole

These are so nice! The tips of making the focus to the face instead of the hair is great as well, although I do find that my focus goes to the nose; they look like red noses haha

Chris Hong Art Haha I actually found it super cute to be honest! Though I have a genuine question! So I’ve been doing many art mistakes and you say to create more geometric shapes but I’ve never thought of doing that since my style is more cartoonish/anime than realism. But I assume shadow casting over certain parts make it look geometric shape? Not sure since I don’t study portraits or anything /: but I’d love to know your input on that! Because when you did it, the drawing became waaaay more realistic than not doing a geometric shape
@@andrewaguayo115 Try using sharp lines instead of soft ones and see how you like it. You can switch(use one fully) and even use a mix of soft and harsh lines for you art. Good luck, I hope I could help.

I might suggest rather than drawing over the artwork, you can use the old practice of using tracing paper over the art and make your comments there, and flip back and forth to show the differences. This doesn't lend itself easily to the contrast / lighting adjustments. though. Just a thought. Maybe some notes on the basics of modeling shapes; chiaroscuro, darkest dark/lightest light, cast shadows and reflected light as they apply to the complex shapes of the face. That may help to clarify the "why" a shadow is too dark or a highlight is too light.
Or just print out two copies and leave one untouched to flip back and forth between.
I need to point out that I watched the full video. Like, I clicked on it and started watching and 20 mins later I realized I wasn't even in the middle of the vid, and when I checked the time and saw it was 1 hour, oh well... Let's just watch it all and learn cuz I have nothing else to do right now -_-

The thing about evening out values and being more subtle in the shadow shapes so they don't compete with the focal point because there's toomuch detail and contrast is really helpful.

Love your critiques and art style but the nose makes it look like the model has a cold, I know that the main goal isn’t to look as accurate as possible but it muddies the shape of the nose.
I love her art style but I definitely agree about the nose. It also to me feels like she's lost the sense of depth in the face because the nose should be one of the brightest spots in most basic lighting types for a picture. Cutting back to drop shadow on the neck in the first drawing also messes with the depth perception because it looks like the hair isn't casting a shadow anymore.
It's kind of me thinking "That looks really nice but it doesn't seem logical to me".

I definitely liked it before she made the nose. It looks off and really not pleasing. The before and after are completely different. The before relies more on the picture, but the after is just... Nah.

She is very talented but the original first drawing looked nicer to me. Guess art really is subjective and even the "correct" techniques aren't always best.

I definitely think that some of these tips are dependent on your own artistic style. I, personally, wouldn't have strengthened certain features by using harder lines since it takes away from the softness my style likes to emphasize. But this was a really interesting video to watch - I haven't seen someone draw over another person's sketch to edit it before!
I disagreed with blocking out the light in the hair on the 3rd drawing. maybe very lightly shade so its not as striking as the highlight on the face but don't completely take it out. Hair reflects light too so if the source is coming from that side then the hair should show that as well given the hard contrast on the face

i agree that she’s adding her art style to the drawings, but i think she does modify the lighting and shadows to be more realistic. this can help teach others who have the intention of creating realistic portraits.
I really like how you didn’t change the shapes completely, like when a neck was too wide or something else, you didn’t change the shape, you mainly focused on schadows and highlights which is really helpful
i think theres a difference between fixing a few things and just completely changing the art style. There were a few helpful tips but i think it's sad that the things that made the art of your students unique and special (since everyone has a different style) were changed aswell.

I think it helps balancing the overall composition, some straight lines can make a lot of contrast in a round/soft piece. But honestly I don't know if that makes sense lol
Oh, um, usually when drawing organic forms (people, animals, etc.) circles are usually avoided. They tend to look inorganic or just unnatural. It also helps with composition and such. Obviously that’s a purely stylistic choice, but I’ve noticed it is a common technique when drawing organic forms! :)
I think it just helps make the features more defined without getting too complex. She seems to have a theme with keeping things simple.

x'D honestly you may be accostumed to drawings with pastel colors and such, watercolors without much value range, etc. cause you do wanna leave shadow areas generally darker in that "same dark gray". people tend to be scared and just gravitate towards puting the same lights and highlights everywhere, no matter if it's the shadow side or not, and it looks cartoonish.

I love how you were still able to leave elements of their own original styles while shaping them into a more in-depth piece!
I disagree, she didn't leave their style or any of their stylistic elements, she changed it to her own. Which isn't what a teacher is supposed to do. This is a very tumblr instagram style of drawing as opposed to being a realistic drawing. I don't think she necessarily improved any of the work or showed any demonstration of actual techniques. She just warped them into her preferred style, and making students copy your style isn't the purpose of teaching. And she didn't demonstrate much understanding of tonality, she adds the same uniform grey all over the piece as opposed to adding any dark darks or bold highlights. In the third piece she takes away from the drawing by making the face really harsh and masculine despite having the reference image where you can clearly see that the facial features are soft and roundish.
I think this video was really informative for lighting and shape choices. I do think the faces did change to your style, I think it was mainly the nose like you said in the video. But people taking your class are learning to do your style choices so I'm not seeing a big deal of the drawing over part. I do hope to see a side by side comparison. Thanks for making these videos! 😊
it's interesting how in the first drawing, before any modifications, the eyes look to the side, but after modifications, they seemed to look at you. Maybe slightly, and maybe my hallucinations, but it felt like eyes were shifted.

I absolutely adore your Skillshare class! Its exactly what I've been looking for and definitely the best on Skillshare. I've taken many online courses, and a college Figure Drawing class, but I always feel like I'm not actually being taught the fundamentals, or that something vital is being left out. What I noticed immediately watching your class is though I've heard the terminology you use (blocking in, using shapes etc) you actually show step by step HOW to do it! You show exactly what you mean and that's VITAL. I feel like I can finally take that big leap forward in my art journey because of your class. I can actually see what I've been doing wrong!!!! I know this is a huge and monumental ask, but please tell us your planning a figure class, or at the very least a course on gesture? You are an AMAZING art teacher!!!!!!!

Art being subjective to personal taste as it is, I can't that your taste in style is appealing to my eye.
I found you making suggestions about already made work really helpful! These drawings were really great to begin with but with ever so slight changes, they become even more effective. I would’ve never really thought about choosing shapes that enhance focus on the face rather than choosing generally interesting shapes.
This is a really cool concept - it really brings out that old saying, that art is a conversation, with this being two different artists taking the same drawing in their own direction.

Some of her techniques and advices are valid and makes sense, but the rest of it seems unnecessary and overdone making the picture look quite muddy. Also it feels like she is completely changing the art style and not improving it. And the nose of all the drawings is overdone too.
Yeah the nose changes were all unnecessary. It seemed to be more of a style thing. Dunno why she changed them
All of the nose “corrections” were way too darkened and it ended up making all of the portraits look like they had broken noses lol

The reason you have so many comments regarding the dark noses is because you are a teacher and are teaching your students incorrectly when it comes to the values on the noses. They are far too dark. Not just a little bit too dark, but incredibly dark. If you stop the video at 55:34 there is a comparison photo that the student worked from as a reference. Honestly, can you not see how the altered drawing on the left is so very wrong? I feel that you have made some big mistakes when it comes to correcting your student's work with regards to value.
You are also drawing straight lines where there are NO straight lines. A shadow will make a straight line, the top of the lips may be straight, but the nose has virtually no straight lines and yet you have altered your student's work with straight lines. Why?
I feel that you have removed the charm and individual style from all of the drawings. You have imposed your own style and whilst that may suit your own drawings I think you have done these an injustice by your alterations. So much so that any "good" advice is ignored due to the way you have removed the character from the originals.

There are some good tips and pieces of information to gain from this video, but it seems clear to me that critique is not something you are familiar with giving. There are a lot of unnecessary changes made seemingly to satisfy only your preferences, given without solid advice alongside them, or things that were done very experimentally with a "well let's see what happens" kind of attitude. I feel it would be best to keep each critique to a couple of strong points and not stray too much from those. Try to support more what the original artist intended, as well, rather than running away with your own ideas. Keep the integrity of the artist intact.

I feel like if you submit your art to be painted over you actually want big changes. I don't see the point in only doing two or three things. Most commenters look at it from a perspective of personal preference instead of how much the student could take away
@@mjrhmekssh What? If you're a student, presumably paying to learn how to create art as you envision it, why would you accept a teacher who doesn't value your takeaways from the exercises? That's a cool story though I guess. She's undoubtedly a talented artist, but if I wanted to see how she *specifically* draws, I would watch almost any of her other videos. Or this could have been a video of redraws rather than being advertised as tips and advice for her students.
While some of the things she did made since and show how you should be thinking about values (light sources and etc,) she took away most of the things I liked about the original drawings. Also she didn't explain why she did some things. Like she often made shapes on the face more geometric or "straight lines" rather than curved. Why?

I think it has to do with defining the shapes. Since the video has too do with her portraits class ( she said the class addresses anatomy and shadow and light values), I think she focused on correcting the drawings with that in mind not the originality or other stuff since for example for a teacher when evaluating a project abt shadow and light values they will focus on that in particular. Not the other stuff that for example you might have liked better on the drawings.

Becoming an art teacher to semi-professional artists is an easy job to get nowadays because of youtube. Just because someone can draw nice pictures doesn't mean they can be good art teachers. Most of her comments were generic and not concise. Artists need to be careful who they pay to teach them about anything.
I don't know. When I first started watching I was like, "Yeah, she's giving tips to follow the foundations in drawing." Then as it went on, I just noticed that there was a lot of points or changes she made that came from her own personal taste, especially the last one. The last drawing, the student never mentioned if she wanted to draw the portrait in their own personal style, but Chris assumed so and kept it so. If the tips for the portrait drawing were towards drawing portraits straight from life, that's not what this video was. It was a video critiquing work based on what aspects of foundations Chris prefers plus her own personal taste.
i mean, if she were to "fix" that drawing she would need to start over, cause the eyes are way too big, the forehead should be lower/bigger, the mouth should be a little bit smaller and definitely go further up the face and closer to the nose. Honestly i think she was just being nice lol. cause otherwise that drawing is wrong from the very foundations. and well, this is what she said in an indirect manner too lol.
Dude, the hate people are throwing to a woman who has one of the best art channels is insane. It's not the first time we see "it looked better before" comments on drawing over videos but I kinda took for granted that they'd have a bit more respect to the f* Chris Hong. People just go at anyone on the Internet theese days. I'm curious to know who theese people are and what do they do in their lives to back up their cruel statements. Besides, most of the things they're saying aren't even true. She was respectful with her students' decisions, she just made those decisions stronger and explained how, she didn't even change them. And she definately worked like the pro she is on the one that looks completely different in style to hers like "go with this, this is your style, it's ok, just pay attention to this and that". If that's not what a good teacher says, I don't know what it is. Also, she could as well not post this video here. I'm nothing but thankful, honestly. And she's not being defensive: she simply doesn't have to smile and nod to whatever thing a nobody feels like saying here. Please excuse me if my english is poor. Keep it going, Chris
haha I appreciate your comment and your English is perfect! I don't get bothered by a lot of comments (used to it by now XD) but I agree, I think there's an upward trend of leaving fairly accusatory, and inflammatory comments guised as some kind of bulletproof "opinions", and being told to just say "thank you for your opinion" as if we shouldn't question its validity is just flagrantly wrong and not something I stand for!

I think this video shows the importance of an honest critique. It helps the artist improve. As someone who has gone through an art course at a university, I know it's important to respect the opinions you get. This is the point of putting your art up for a critique. But its also important to receive everything with a critical mind as well. Think about the critique you received, don't blindly take it or reject it. THINK. Ponder. Experiment. Understand what the changes made to your original design bring to the drawing. If a teacher changed something you are really passionate about in your design, stick to your design, but try to understand WHY you're doing it. Ego is a really hard thing to get over when you're in this stage of work, but it's worth it. As it's also important to know that, sometimes, your teachers are wrong, maybe not entirely, but they CAN make mistakes. If you're unsure about a critique if there are TOO many changes if it doesn't feel like you anymore, get a second opinion. Even if you're not unsure, get a second opinion, it will only enrich your work. Your repertoire. Personally, I wouldn't make all the changes she made. Some I agree with, others I don't. I would make other choices, but I respect the fact that she is making choices from HER point of view. I think that seeing their work put to such scrutiny certainly gave the artists a lot to think about. As always, I loved listening to Chris talk, I love her work, especially her colors.

I appreciate you critiquing the pieces but the only one I cannot agree with are the straight lines in the nose and addition of geometric. These are more stylistic choices rather than fundamental technique. I feel like you muddied up the shape of the lips as well and lost a lot of the contrast in the face in general.

@Alex Fülle, I agree with you. It's okay when she does it because it's her unique style. But when all her students begin to copy that nose or (even worse) when she changes other artists' drawings of noses into her "recognizable" style, then it gets to be too much. I really think the first nose looks like a clown's and the second one like an alcoholic because the girl's face is so pale. Sadly, however, we are (apparently) not allowed to comment on what "we see". We must conform and be agreeable and see things the way the aggressive viewers do. The ones who are ready to do battle over someone's point of view. If you are not an agreeable sheep, their hammer will strike you on the head. Because, in this age, popularity wins over freedom of expression. You must be in agreement with the artist and her followers because, being popular on TH-cam, makes you an expert in every way. My condolences to you that your comment did not earn you a kissy heart. It was honest as well as kind.
@@justtubingby129 The noses are what is really troubling to me. It gives them a cartoonish character, which is fine if you are drawing that way, but for straight portraiture it does grate a little. While it kind of works in the first drawing (although I agree with you it makes the whole image a bit clownish), it absolutely ruins the lovely geometry of the second drawing.
Even your sketch lines, clearly made with so much ease... Self doubt for me is my own jailer and keeps me from being confident or even comfortable enough. I have enjoyed drawing for even my own meditative reasons some which I don't fully understand but it's truly frustrating when it seems like I might or probably won't develop a "style", or learn to properly create the illusion of depth through light and dark tones, proper or correct foreshortening as well among other things any skilled or semi skilled arts person should have some degree of understanding. You are incredible Chris, thumbs up, and keep up the greatness you create in such a natural way.

This was such a great and informative video! I just had to comment since I saw people complaining but... the fact that you went this far into working on their work is so helpful. I don't see how anyone could complain that you put MORE time into giving that many more tips and advice as you draw over it. In art school, I found that you would be lucky to even get 5 minutes of a professor's time so it's obvious whether more critique or less critique is better!? And I thought you were actually super nice in consideration with style. I personally don't understand the gripe with style, the point is to make it better fundamentally regardless of style or "OVERDRAWING" someone else's work, which is... THE POINT?
Thanks Joanne, I honestly didn't expect to upset some people when I uploaded the video!😂 I got the idea for it since I was frustrated that I was leaving very long feedbacks to students' assignments but not being able to actually DEMONSTRATE what I meant. I thought it was a really great idea actually, that this video could serve as an extension to the class that students can refer to to help with their own drawings, and also be accessible for people on TH-cam as well. I also don't understand the whole thing about style, as an artist I really don't even give "style" much thought anyway. I'm just happy to see most people are finding the video as I intended it, which is to be helpful!

In the first portrait the light is not coming from the right. It is from the left. You can see from the shadow of the nose, the highlights on the shoulder area.
