I used to live 10 minutes from Dixmont . I lived in Avalon, PA -right up the road from Pennsylvania Route 65. My aunt introduced me to the Dixmont stories and it’s very interesting . I would say I was about 11 years old when I first heard of it and since then I’ve been into paranormal stuff .
My father worked at Dixmont for quite a few, many years, working in maintenance and pipefitting, etc. So even tho he didn't take care of the residents, when he first started working there, he would always come home depressed after seeing the mentally ill patients. His mother had dementia, but this was his biggest exposure to so many different types of the mentally ill. He had a huge heart. I volunteered there once, they were having some sort of fair and I was responsible for wheeling a patient around. It wasn't bad for me, I was a teenager in a fairground and had always been involved in healthcare. Granted, I never got to see the inside of the building. This would have been 1978-80.
Also interesting fact … they put the Walmart that was supposed to be there in Baden, PA : right up the road near where the old Ames used to be on route 65
@dontstarepleasek true that! I understand that after the land slide, they won't be building after all, and will let the land "return to nature". I'd rather have the Dixmont State Hospital grounds, I would have liked to explore it.

I lived five minutes away from the place but was born too late to see the building. They tore it down for a wal mart that never ended up being built
