    We did a family trip this past summer to the UP. Montreal Falls was our favorite hike, and the place where I found my first Michigan agate. Pretty sure I yelled something along the lines of, "Aha! They do exist!"

    • @MichiganRocks
      @MichiganRocks  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      They're tough to find. Did you find it right at the falls? We got there very late and only had a couple hours. I wish I had more time to explore all the little beaches on the way to the falls. I did that with my sister and brother in law last summer when we were there.

    • @ill_prepared_optimist
      @ill_prepared_optimist 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@MichiganRocks we found them right at the beach next to falls. My son and I were very tempted by those little rocky spots along the way, but decided we needed to maximize our time at the falls. And also, we figured getting up and down to some of those spots would be tough for the 3-year old.

    • @MichiganRocks
      @MichiganRocks  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ill_prepared_optimist Some would be tough for an in shape 20 year old. We hit about 3 or 4 beaches on the way out last summer. I don't remember finding many agates, maybe a couple really small ones, but my sister found a really nice chunk of pure prehnite.

    It's so fun to see how much of our historty we share between Michgan and French Canadian. Most of your city names comes from french explorer expressions: Montreal (Montréal = Mount Royal in old french), Grand Marais (Big swamp), Au Grès (Sandstone), Blanchard (surname) Bois Blanc (White Wood), Pointe aux pins (Pine's point) etc.

    • @MichiganRocks
      @MichiganRocks  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I don't speak French, so I didn't know a lot of the meanings of those names. I did know Grand Marais meant big swamp. We have a place near here called Presque Isle and there's a park in Marquette by the same name. We pronounce "Isle" like "eel" here, but in Marquette, they pronounce it like "aisle". I think that means "false island" or something similar.

      I don't think they made it that far. It's not far, but the terrain was pretty tough to walk through. Before I left, we followed a four wheeler trail into the woods. We were hoping it would turn back toward the lake, but it didn't seem to be doing so. That was the only trail after the initial trail fizzled out pretty quickly. I really wish we had gotten there earlier in the day.

      I think they're pretty capable on their own. I wouldn't bring a kayak here because there's not a good way to get it into the water. It's a pretty good walk until you can even see the water and then there's a cliff along much of the walk to the falls. There are a few places you can get down to the water, but bringing a kayak down with you would be a tough, especially when it came time to bring it back up.

    Another awesome place to visit. As jagged as the interior of that cavern was it’s all little hard for me to believe that it was mined out but what do I know, just guessing ! If stranded out in the woods I think the wolves and the coyotes would be more to fear than the bears. Someone near our place in Michigan used to raise wolves and it was the eeriest feeling hearing them howl at night.

      We have thimbleberries in a few spots around here, but they're sort of stunted. They grow at Rockport where the ground has a lot of limestone near the surface. I don't know if that alkaline soil stunts them or if our slightly warmer weather is the problem.
