I think the fact that it was a complicated setup and that the home contestant could lose the game for the studio contestant by not playing the game correctly is why it was retired. I remember the episode where the home contestant messed up on all three items and the studio contestant lost through no fault of their own.
Those women contestants were smokin' hot. I agree with Bob's comment to Robert. :D Also, Phone Home Game was the only pricing game where a contestant could appear on the show from home and still be eligible to be a contestant in the studio.
All I've got to say though is $3 for instant noodles? Really? I don't think Robert is a smart shopper to say the least and yet we're in the presence of a miracle here when they both split $5,000 each when that $10,000 cash award was revealed.
They didn't want to keep people on hold for so long knowing that the home contestant could hang up or the phone company could dump on them by the time the game got played. There could also be a phone outage or other circumstances beyond their control.
I can see why it was retired. You’re asking the contestant on the phone to basically be the host of the game… and she can’t see any of it. 😂 I’m not too familiar the 80s-era (I was negative-6 months old when this episode aired). This clip is the first time I’ve seen this game played. Was is played often?
Bob didn't pronounce the name of the city correctly, and the captioning misspelled it. The city is Haverhill, Massachusetts. It's pronounced HAY-vr'ill.
This is a miracle considering neither he or the woman at home have a clue

He was certainly very lucky that the only grocery item which he guessed right was $10,000 which was a big amount way back then.

My favorite game on the price is right is the cliff hangar game

There was obviously no simple way that those would be able to cost that much, ever. At least not back then.
Maybe in 2024 at a store in the Yukon.. but not 1989 California.
