I am Maltese but I still admire these men and the bravery they showed on the battlefield so they could take what's theirs from a more powerful opponent.
I love the American Revolution. Something about a small group of rebels rising up to fight for their freedom against the most powerful military force in the world just makes me proud. But, I feel like that time of revolution might be coming again soon, unless our country gets rid of its corrupt politicians (which it probably won't). God bless our forefathers.
I thoroughly enjoyed the first part of the series. I am amazed at the vast numbers of people who call themselves Americans but have no idea how this great country got started. It would serve everyone well to watch the series to get a much needed refresher course since it does highlight the most important events. Having a common knowledge of history is, after all, one of the ways we connect to each other. (Judging by the posts, some folks need a refresher course in writing, as well!)
Nothing like American History schooled to us by Brokaw, Donald Trump, Michael Douglas, some screenwriter, a fashion consultant, Brian Williams... Can't wait for Dr. Phil and Simon Cowell's insights.
Yes, of course this is biased. It was made by the History channel, but that doesn't mean they changed things. They say constantly throughout this series that Washington's strength wasn't that he won battles, but he was able to retreat and not lose his army. He wasn't dumb enough to fight to the death. And it wasn't "luck." You weren't paying attention at all if you think that. The Colonists' tenacity was something unseen in human history.
To Brian Williams (1:18) ixnay on talking about something you have no idea about, British troops used the colour red in there uniforms for tactically sound reasons, European armies used spotters to count the number of troops in the battle line to ascertain the amount of optimal fire power an enemy could bring to bear on the there own line,Red is actually a form of camouflage, of all colours red is the hardest to see at distance when measuring numbers, they blend. That is why they were in red
I am a US History teacher and would like to say that if you are watching an American for profit cable channel to get an unbiased view of the American Revolution and then complaining about you have major problems. Yes the documentary is flawed, yes the French play a huge part in the war and yes there were Loyalists all over the place but remember it's cable tv and furthermore, every country/company/person has their own bias and exaggerated tales. Calm down, read more, and stop the name calling.
I'm British watching this. Like I said would you really not like someone enough to kill them even if they spoke the same language as you and your family originated from their country and Americans still spoke with a British accent back then.
You're possible the coolest person I've spoken to on TH-cam. And I'm pretty sure this is a worlds first for the ending a discussion with an agreement on youtube...I'm English, but the Americans did a damn great job getting where they are (As it happens, I am currently staying with friends in Texas after being in California, great places and nice people). Feel free to borrow the machine, although it is in maintenance, I tried to get to the 80's, ended up in the 18th century...
I love how they always say that Americans fought only in militant skirmish tactics. It didn't really work so well until an official formal army was raised.
@Spockkker : could you give examples where there are lies being told...? I'm asking, because this is what I remember being taught in school in the early 70's, and I'd like to see what your complaints are so I can investigate. Also, I didn't here any put down of "everyone else" in this series. Its early Americans fighting against government oppression/tyranny to stay free. (? what are you referring to by "put down of everyone else" ?)
With all these generals and "experts" commenting on how the US was fighting for their way of life as an underdog, there's a very present irony. You could easily switch the names of the sides around to include the natives and Afghans and this clip would still make sense.
Aw, cchhaarrlliiie, I've never had a better compliment. Thank you. I'm mostly English by descent and the bond I feel with that country is different from what I feel for America, but no less strong and positive. I've never been there but still its my "other home." Enjoy your trip and enjoy your real home. Okay, stupid emotional request...when you get home would you please put your hand on the ground and say, "Donna (my real name) says hello. Have a good trip and a good life. Bye.
@Spockkker its not really meant to be a documentary.. its like what people think about america and how it was made in the prespectives of real americans,,,,
"Its not about the training or weapons you have... its about whats in your belly, its whats in your heart" ...i think this was worded poorly but i agree, i get the message lol
@1stLordtheAdmiralty You're certainly right about that. We never would have won the war without the French. But, it was incredibly brave of the colonists to fight the British, and ultimately a good move, am I right?
It happened. Don't believe it if you want to, but it clearly states in the opening sequence, in all of the games that its based on many cultures and heritages.
The americans tend to forget that the main reason why they got their independence is because France supported the colonial uprising and Spain, Holland and Russia declared war on Britain in 1780. Britain was now at war with half of Europe including the 13 colonies that had french support (weapons, french voluntieers etc). This was to much for Britain and in the "Treaty of Paris" america got their independence and the constitution was written in 1787 in Philadelphia if i remember correct.
Sound familiar? The Americans were the guerrilla fighters, out numbered, ill equipped, seeking help from others, fighting for their land against a government thousands of miles away, and willing to persevere and hang on for as long as it took to wear down the British.
LMAO, "If you're going up against men who don't have shoes in the middle of winter, bring your best game...'cus they'll open a can of WHOOP ass on you..." - Williams
@beesleeper Maybe not, but that's what they used, and it seemed to work pretty good for them back then. Why change the economic system that's been in effect for over 200 years?
Spanish fighting at Saratoga? I do remember them there. Neither the Spanish, nor French or Dutch took part in the pre 1780 pivotal battles. The English declared war on the Dutch by themselves. The French took part in 2 land battles, one was a victory. You cant have Yorktown without Saratoga, Monmouth, Kingsmountain, Trenton, Princeton...etc It wouldnt have happened without pure American initiative.
This isn't a comprehensive, 6 disc volume based on the entire Rev. War. They have 45 minutes to give the feeling on an 8 year war. They aren't going to talk about the freaking "Battle of Pensacola." They talk about what they needed to: Saratoga & Yorktown. One got the French in, and one effectively ended the war. That's what they had time for.
@brooklyn560 you are wrong, about 1 million italians who migrated to south america mostly argentina, uruguay , brasil, and a small town in central mexico called new italy and also a group of germans who also came to the northern state of chichuahua, referred to the whole continent as AMERICA , I know people call you guys americans, I was just talking about the title of this documentary which no matter how you at it is wrong. don't you think? btw not trying to offend you in any way
I love how the brits stand there in their duck formations while the continental army goes in there all fucking Rambo. Ahaha I love America and it's history.
I think you mean, History is written by the victor, and thanks to the history books we know that the UK was not only fighting the American Rebels but also France and Spain by the later part of the war, we also know that without French help Yorktown would not have fallen which would have led to one of two things A Cornwallis would have held out until Clinton arrived and B the navy could have pulled them out.
I like this series, except for the random celebrities like Michael Strahan and Tim gunn being interviewed. What possible incite could they contribute that the average person wouldn't already know?
@writingdreamsful the total amount of tax the UK was asking for amounted to 1/2 a pence, someone had to pay for the wars against the French in North America. The UK Parliament believed rightly that the American colonists should help foot the bill that the British people had been paying.
@Jacobrester Maybe so, but, you can't say that the French weren't a HUGE part of our victory. Without them, things would have turned out much differently, even if we won.
@Spockkker You don't really need historians to tell you what happened in America unless you need special aid to understand. America beat the British, what so hard to understand?
@TandyRunsThis But they probably mentioned that America did in their history, I mean everyone knows that but why are the french and spanish not mentioned in this war? ALso they didn't bail Europe out of two world wars. They contributed greatly to oneside of the war.
I'm not offended by the Scientologist comment. I didn't consider it an attack. It just hurt a little because of, well, Scientologists. We're good. I think what you proposed is as close as we're going to get.I concede what you wrote in your recent message is possibly true. Element of self doubt on my part and all that. So I shake your hand and wish you well. And I'd borrow that time machine in a heartbeat.
you are brainwashed. all scientology is, is a way to steak your money. hubbard is nothing but a liar, i hope you find your way out of that cult. god bless you.
Pt. 2. I sew some, though I'm not a tailor. Its a definite skill. Some are more gifted at it than others. But the amount of the task that is subject to interpretation is quite limited compared to the historian. Historians do a significantly larger amount of interpretation, and they are starting with the written word of someone else. Maybe its accurate, maybe it isn't. It's just the nature of the whole thing. An element of doubt is a step toward objectivity.
hi classmates from history
Shut up it’s tyler

the reenactments look really good, they should have just made this in to a mini series
1:08 HEADSHOT
it was a heart shot
I'll be showing this before teaching Patrick Henry's brilliant speech to my 11th grade English class.
I love the USA. Especially its history and culture.
Wow, I love Tim Gunn! It's really random that he's featured in this, I did not expect that at all.

Please expand on that thought.

alot of this information is right man, the only thing about this series is that is flawed is that they go through things too fast and skip some stuff
I like that they have just ordinary celebrity that just love there country on this show.
