After 5 months of work, it's finally done! I consider this to be the best video on the channel so far. It features the best my team has to offer and it also includes one of the most interesting stories I've ever covered. I hope you enjoy it and I hope to provide content in the future that matches this video's caliber
Confession: When I was a kid watching this, whenever Larry the Cucumber said "They'd better not laugh" in the opening sequence I would go out of my way to laugh at him.

I actually met Phil while attending a Christian university in 2016, and he told us the story about the rise and fall of veggie tales and he pretty much blamed himself for the fall of VT because he got selfish and stopped putting God first. He was a pretty cool guy and I even got a selfie with him
At least he knew what happened God is really amazing when you want to share his word, he will really help you❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤ Hopefully everyone will be reminded about putting God first through Phils story.
I think the biggest strength about VeggieTales was that it taught morals more so than religion. Sure, the stories were mostly based on or inspired by Bible stories, and they quoted scripture and had their "God made you special" send-off, but the morals were "don't lie," "be kind to everyone," or "material possessions won't make you happy," and I think that's what really made it a show that everyone, even non-Christians, could enjoy.
All of those things are in the Bible tho. You just have to actually READ the book and see the themes outside of the general and obvious corruption from the stories being about humans. Cus individually humans are relatively okay and can be quite nice... but as a group we're often hateful, jealous, greedy dickheads lol. The Bible generally just tells you to do your best and be nice and helpful (and to put God first in other ways). Veggie tales did a good job at portraying the general messages in a fun way, without them directly reading about all the sex and murder that's also in there 😂
I'm an atheist/anti-theist and yet I regularly listen to Christian metal bands like Becoming the Archetype, With Blood Comes Cleansing, The Devil Wears Prada, Blood of the Martyrs, and I the Breather. Can't deny well-written music even when the lyrics are kinda cringe :)
@@katyungodly sadly a lot of Christian bands that us Christians listen too aren't very good and are usually like "Oh we're christian and we sing about God what do you not like us singing about God?" Whenever there's any criticism. It sucks that there are better ones out there who don't get recognized.
Phil failed for one main reason: he just wasn't a great businessman. He's a dreamer and an artist. He needed someone savvy to run the business side who believed in him and his vision. Many of his choices were just poorly thought out. That said, he did make something unique and exceptional that touched a lot of people and in the end that's the best an artist can hope for.
That's what he said: Beware of your dreams. If you want to make your dreams come true, you should be careful what you wished for. Phil might be the most creative Christian has to offer, but businesses can be rather complicated for him.
Whether you were atheist, agnostic or Christian. VeggieTales was enjoyable for all kids. In a day an age where Christian songs and media bored me to death as a kid. VeggieTales was something I very much enjoyed. I still remember the songs with fondness. Sad to see that they changed so much they fell. Should have stuck with what works.
@Jellybeanhater18 i wasn't talking to you IDC if you don't like us or not, just respect us. I try to respect catholics, up until they start attempting to convert us and tell us what we can And cannot do.
My mom wouldn't let me watch veggietales when i was younger because she said it was "bad for kids". I asked her why did the church let us watch it and just sent me to my room.
My sister wrote a letter to Big Idea when she was like 10 asking if the French peas were inspired by Monty Python and the Holy Grail and they responded and said yes!
In one of the Christmas silly songs, Larry slams the door on the IRS. This made 8 year old me think the IRS was a group of scammers and you should always hang up if they called or slam the door if they came.
Recipient of a few phone calls from them... their website said (at that time) the first way they contact you is by mail. No email, call or visit should be taken seriously.
I watched Veggie Tales growing up. I'm 34 now and songs like "Barbara Manatee" and "His Cheeseburger" still pop into my head unbidden quite often. Fond memories, man.
@chzybean Sport Utility Vehicle was so good. I think there was another one he did about a chocolate that melted while he was on the bus? That was nice, too.
@@jamesa.7549 was it the one about his hat at the bus stop? Something something "Oh golly, Mr. Arpagatti, tell me whaddya think of that?" Or something. That's the only part I can remember. Oh and, "A GREAT BIG SQUASH JUST SAT UPON MY HAT. A GREAT BIG SQUASH JUST SQUISHED MY HAT REAL FLAT."
Veggie tales appealed to a secular audience because it wasn’t just a show about religion, it was a really good show, that happened to be about religion. Most religious shows put the religion first, and then the show, and just come off feeling like a weird propaganda. Veggie tales takes religion as a part of their show, but not the whole thing. They added a substance to their show that went beyond the religious aspects. Veggie tales wouldn’t be the same show if it wasn’t about religion, but there is so, so much more to it than religion that it can still stand on its own. That is a rare thing in Christian media.
@@nerobiblios4086 in fairness, Prince of Egypt would appeal to any of the Abrahamic religions, not just Christians. Moses is kind of a big deal in all of it.
I'm an hardcore atheist who grew up in a hardcore evangelical church I see religion as a cult but as a kid veggie tales was the only good memory I have of church and I have to completely agree with you.
Oh, don't worry, I'm sure there is a TON of idiots who get lucky with good ideas, rely on handouts to keep barely afloat and then screw everything up for everybody else while somehow keeping the fake persona of 'poor wittle huwt genius uWu'. Quite a lot of them get to milk it for money when people forget they're screw-ups too!
I’m Jewish, but I had a very Christian physical therapist (I’m disabled) Whenever I went to see her, she put in a VeggieTales tape for me I loved it so much, and I distinctly remember some Old Testament stuff in there
Veggietales: the only Christian show where the characters actually had character and didn't just talk about god Edit: and no I'm going to the shitty "OMg THx FOr THe LIkes GUys"
I'm extremely religious but I know you have a primarily secular audience. I love your critique on Christian media because it can be so poor quality we really need more content like OG Veggietales and The Chosen they are good shows and that's what Christian media should strive to be so good that even secular audiences will enjoy it.
I am being humble when I am telling you that I am the most powerful strongest coolest smartest most famous greatest funniest TH-camr of all time! That's the reason I have multiple girlfriends and I show them off on my channel all the time! Bye bye ben
Fun fact: when I was younger, I went to the live VeggieTales show, and they did a giveaway for a full collection of every episode. On the stage they announced the winner, and it happened to be my mom. I still have the box 👌
I have read the book several times. As a devoted Christian who discovered Veggie Tales in her teens, thanks for giving the show the time it deserves as one of the few modern Christian media pieces that has effort in it.
I always liked veggietales because their lessons for kids weren't "god will make everything okay" they had actual lessons important for kids like treating others the way you want to be treated, and doing what's right even when it's hard. Really incredible
It’s interesting and a little sad that this show is notable for having those traits. Isn’t that what Christianity is supposed to be all about? Amazing how rare those kind of messages and a general loving message with lack of judgement are in the rest of Christian media.
@@Rubber_duckie_floating jesus said to love as I have loved you, to his disciples. That kind of love is crazy powerful, he died for people that he created, some that didn't even accept him. But also remember he said there is no other way into heaven but through me, so not only do you have to love people, you also have to let them know how to be saved.
@@Rubber_duckie_floating I wouldn't say his words are subjective, there very objective, just people take it out of context or misinterpreted them. But I do agree that alot of churches want to call people sinners, knowing their righteousness is like filthy rags, and not focus on getting the word of God and all his teachings in them.
It's really cool to see how many people were fans of Veggie Tales. I'm impressed that there's still a fandom of it. And it's really sweet of Phil to apologize in show. I'm just honestly glad to find a Christian TH-camr that isn't hateful or trying to force religion down others' throats, and also acknowledge that

WHAT? That's like...removing Johnny Depp from Edward Scissorhands! Which actually happened in today's Super Bowl commercial. Timothee Chalamet played his son, Edgar Scissorhands. I was very sad when they removed Johnny Depp from this new Scissorhands content. February 7, 2021, 7:24pm
Veggie tales was based on bible stories, learning basic memory verses, and moral lessons for children (share, don't lie, be kind-things you get from other children or preschool shows) being secular removes half of the content that made it what it was, but if done right may work. But really, it was what is who are no longer practicing or left the church remember. Many remember it fondly from what i know. And even if we don't believe anymore or have different views from the church we grew up in, remember this show as a joy. Personally, I wouldn't want to take God or christianity out of this show as it always did it fairly well. Granted, I have not seen it in years, so I may be misremembering it. But I do recall it being a happy part of Sunday school.
I grew up with Veggie Tales and 321 Penguins in the early 2000s and I still hold these shows in high regard because they were quality, had a good message, and were ultimately entertaining to watch. Despite problems with my faith in my mid to late teens, I will never forget the message in Veggie Tales because it reminds me that I am loved. Me and my sisters still quote lines and sing songs from Veggie Tales to this day. Phil's story is very bittersweet, but serves as a good reminder to not be prideful, even if with good intent.
i cant believe the company actually kicked the original creators (who happen to be bob & larry's voice actors) just so they could butcher the whole thing
You shouldn't be surprised. The forces of Evil hates anyone who stays on the side of the Almighty. And those forces will do whatever it takes to bring it down and destroy it.
That's just business in a nutshell. Any time a creator wants to hold onto their artistic influence it usually ends up with other, more profit focused, people pushing them out in favor of pushing their own agendas.
“Remember: God made you special, and He loves you very much!” Those words got me through my religiously traumatic childhood and upbringing and they still comfort me today. I absolutely adore Veggietales and I’m so grateful to Sabrespark for giving it the respect and time it deserves!
Except for the fact that it isn't true at all if you observe the basic facts of reality, lmao. All anything can hope for is a swift transfer into the state of permanent entropy, most species have been added to the fossil record and have not been remembered since. Billions of "special" humans, forgotten thousands of years ago, pulverized to dust, their faces never to be reimagined even. And ever still unfathomable eons lay before us in which we will sleep dreamless within.
As of now, Phil is no longer working on the Veggietales show because he and Mike were refused to have more creative control. The show is currently looking to recast the characters. Regardless, I'm glad that veggietales had one more season with the band back together, and it went out on a high note. That's more than can be said for other kids shows like Thomas the tank engine.
"Whatever happened to 'it's funny because it's true?'" "2+2=4 is true, but not funny. Guys?" "What is the solution to the equation 2 plus 2?" "I dunno. What does 2 plus 2 equal?" Whir... DING! "Weedeater."
It took me way longer to get that joke than I'd care to admit. But it works several ways: 1) random and nonsensical; 2) chicken was literally scared by a weed eater; 3) "we'd eat her."
The amount of mysterious faceless entities that gave Phil help and little nudges of encouragement when he was starting out really feels like acts of angels. Fitting thing, considering the subject don’t you think?
Best Christian cartoon. Hands down. Even if you don’t believe in that stuff its still great, has funny jokes and can hold out on its own. Animation is not bad either. 10/10
You can tell that Phil is an extremely good person, while he may have his flaws, he never did anything that he did in malice, and his whole motivation behind the show was to spread his own Christian beliefs in an incredibly respectful way.
I wholeheartedly agree with that, he had to sell Big Idea Productions, they were out of money from making Jonah, I remember being a member of the Super Fantastic VeggieTales Fan Club back in 2002-2003 maybe 4, they sent letters telling the club members they just didn't have money keep it going, they still honored the memberships and sent goodies including VHS tapes of the series, even though they were running out of tapes they could give away.
It’s kind of inspirational to me. I want to be an animator someday and tell stories like Phil wanted to, but I’ve always been doubtful about it. Phil had so much determination and faith that it kind of makes me a little confident too.
Even as someone who is strictly non-religious, I still love the show. It doesn’t come off as ‘indoctrination’ as many others do, but more of just telling you stories from the Bible, and how to be a good kid.
Honestly this. The thing with the bible is no matter if you believe it or not, there is some legitimately good stories in there religion aside that are worth sharing and VeggieTales took that concept and just RAN with it. And my goodness did it nail it
My family was actually Christian (if only because of my grandmother) and we really liked veggietales. Glad it gets recognition and I can see it’s history.
I'm not Christian and wasn't raised Christian but this show was a big part of my childhood. I think it's stupid to remove god from it because that is part of it's identity. It also doesn't overpreach on Christianity and just gives good universal morals while also being hilarious.
The redesign's for the characters aren't bad but there a definite down grade. I don't like how they gave them eyebrows. Sure they can be more expressive but like with these designs they don't work at all. But still that wont change how I view phill. He is a hardworking man no matter what
Tragic story, but brilliantly researched! You've created a lovely eulogy to the VeggieTales franchise and shared a story with the world that may have never been told... Thank you for providing closure to a story that I didn't even know needed it.
This is the literal greatest documentary that I have ever seen on not only Veggie Tales, but Phil himself as well on TH-cam. I grew up with Veggie Tales literally from my earliest days as the youngest child, but I never knew the full story behind it's fall and holy crap is it truly devastating, I nearly got emotional over it all, now knowing everything Phil went through. Every bit of time and effort shows throughout this video and I watched it from start to finish. Also, just subscribed as well, so happy I came across your channel!
In an amazing twist of fate and irony, Phil’s story, reflects that of Jonah. He focused on the wrong thing and found himself in the belly of a whale. Then he turned himself around and God blessed his work again.
Man... I’m not even Christian anymore, but VeggieTales still holds up. Mostly because it focused on being a good show before being a Christian show. The show just feels warm and wholesome in the way that Christianity should, without all the “I’m better than you” pretentiousness, fear-mongering, and preaching against certain types of people that really soured me on religion in general. VeggieTales makes me feel nostalgia for a much less cynical time in my life.
@@jj2059 I very much disagree. My whole life I've mostly encountered this exact type of pretentious, "better than you", superior mindset. The exceptions are rare.
Simple Bitch even if most of the people you encountered were like that it doesn’t change my statement. Unfortunately it’s often that these types of people are the most outspoken whereas I would say most normal people belonging to the religion are quiet about their beliefs and faith. There are 2.4 billion Christians in the world. And billions belonging to other religions. Don’t let a couple bad dozen people you see dictate how you view a religion that billions belong to, however I can understand your position
I'm not gonna lie, I'm Catholic (it's basically the same thing as Christianity just with a few changes here and there), and yeah, I really am starting to notice some of the hypocrisies in religion. My parents are really devout Catholic (never going a day without mentioning the big Guy in the sky) and when I was little, I didn't really believe them when they said Catholics are NOT always perfect, and have done really messed up stuff in the past. Again, I was really little at the time. Obviously nowadays, I've grown up a little and I now understand what they meant. And I gotta say, I have mad respect for the religious people out there who actually try to give the religion a good name. To not think that they own the world or whatever because of their beliefs. They don't abuse the power of religion to do whatever they want. And as a Catholic, I sometimes wonder to myself, isn't the entire point of believing in God loving everyone else, regardless of their background. You can be friends with an atheist, jew, Buddhist, etc. and it would be totally cool. If everyone truly felt the love and compassion Christianity is supposed to exhibit rather than be super toxic about it? In short, I may not be the biggest fan of my being Catholic, but maybe down the road something will work out in the end. And watching this video kind of gives me some hope that maybe no matter bad things get, you might get something out of it. It may not be bad or even good. It could be terrible. But as long as it leaves an impact on you, and you try to own up to it, all I have to say to that is: God, you sir definitely have a weird but interesting way of making things work. Sorry for the rambling, but I just wanted to get that off my chest. I really should start re watching Veggietales. Saber wasn't kidding when he said this video would be big. Worth the wait!
Soo basically Phil was an overly naive artist who just so happened to get bailed out a lot by very generous people. Yet his Christian franchise is still wildly recognizable. Maybe he WAS being guided by God EDIT: So just to clarify, I'm not saying Phil's success is undeserved. He has a great show with genuinely good morals and humor. What i'm saying is he was inordinately lucky; to an extent that nobody could ever possibly hope to replicate it. It wasn't supposed to be a dig at him.
@@bobpaul1143 Except Phil wasn't weighed down by severe mental issues (While never getting physiological help) and didn't spend all his time making comics on the internet. And his series wasn't Fan Fiction. And he at least knew how to draw and didn't use his stories call out people who harassed him. Unlike Chris (I don't hate him or see him as a bad person, I just wish someone would give this kid the help he really needs).
i never really watched veggietales as a kid like the most memorable thing that i remember about the show was the characters predicting the future on how humor is randomly generated
So glad Phil got his show back in a way he’s happier with. Seems like a stand up dude. So glad there wasn’t some falling out between him and Mike, I was waiting for that drop.
Nintendotron64 I respect that he took that responsibility. I personally didn’t see a lot of selfishness or over-ambition to be honest. Maybe he could be accused of some lack of responsibility or leadership when he didn’t make sure his company was safe with a contract. But I in no way saw him selfish or idek how you could even be “over-ambitious”
Corporations: We're going to take what you made and remove everything that people loved about it. >Show fails twice Corporations: [Surprised Pikachu Face]
Removing a big part of anything leads to ruin. You practically have to go back to the drawing board, not go "well, this was successful before, if we reboot it now with a big chunk taken out we expect it to be more than the success of the previous work!". All those parts influence each other to make the formula .
He was sort of like the Christian Walt Disney until his business fell apart. You’ve got the early interest in art, dropping out of college, the best friend/business partner that helps found the studio (Phil with Mike and Walt with Ub Iwerks), pioneering a new medium and animation techniques, heck even the location Chicago (where Walt was born and spent his teen years before moving to Kansas City). Sad he couldn’t keep his company together, I hope in hindsight that Phil’s name is up there with Walts.
Walt's name is murkier tho. it's thanks to him that Disney owns everything and everyone. b/c of him the copyright laws were extended to basically forever. that means that we will never be able to see how other studios would interpret classic fairy tales or american legends
His tenure as the "Christian Walt Disney" was pretty short lived, especially considering he only ever made one successful franchise while every other franchise he made like 321 Penguins never caught on. Walt Disney made countless hits, while Phil was pretty much a one-hit wonder.
@@cooperminion825 Yes, but one can argue that that was due to Eisner and Katzenberg opening the company up to shareholders. When Walt died, his studio was basically the mom and pop shop of Hollywood studios.
Well even if you take the God/Christian stuff out the morals themselves aren't bad either. "Don't spread rumors," "Be kind to those who are different from you", "Stand up for what right."
@@nxbula7540 It felt like they remembered "Oh yeah, veggietales was for christians. uh, we gotta throw something in so they don't click off!" Then pulled up a random bible verse generator and based it on that
25:10 The simplistic-yet-expressive designs for all the characters are so brilliant from both an animation perspective and a marketing perspective. I once saw an interview with the creators of Phineas and Ferb where they said their design philosophy for the characters was to focus on one distinct shape any kid could draw as the baseline, because if a kid can't draw your character they won't feel connected to it and might feel bad about themselves, but making a character that's recognizable even in a three-year-old's crayon adaptation means that kid will draw your character over and over again. I can't even begin to count the number of times between the ages of 2 and 5 where I would draw a red circle and green oval on any sheet of paper, give them some big eyes and a smile, and imagine myself one day making my own VeggieTales show.
2:39 To be fair Bibleman was supposed to be corny, it was referencing the old Batman show, and, they even made fun of themselves in an episode. Bibleman was talking about a villain and said something like "He's a dirty villain who hides in the shadows, and he's cheap, just like our producers" as everyone looks at the camera.
I also remember a running gag in one episode where they point out their reusing an old villain with a new coat of paint, and it culminates in a genuinely badass one-liner during a lightsaber duel that I've never forgotten: "for a guy who's reinvented himself, you sure don't fight any better".
@@Double-R-Nothing " during a lightsaber duel that I've never forgotten" That one line made me realize that I know Bibleman and have seen at least 2 VHS tapes of it when I was being babysat by one of my mom's friends back in the early 2000's...
Like, the 90s had... McGee and Me, VeggieTales, Secret Adventure... (was that good?), oh, Your Story Hour is good, Jungle Jam & Friends The Radio Show, bunch of bible story movies of varying quality... Uhhh... Oh oh, Greatest Adventures Stories From The Bible
There’s an anime movie called Tokyo Godfathers that is more Christian that lot of religious Christmas movies I’ve known of recently such as Last Ounce or Courage or Christmas With a Capital C. Although admittedly it would be a pretty hard sell for the more conservative Christians since one of the main characters is an unambiguous trans woman
Apparently, as a wee lad, I watched Larry Boy and the Rumor Weed so much that my parents had to buy me a second VHS copy of the movie because I had worn out the first one. I can't imagine how sick of it they must have been.
i'm french so i never watched Veggietales like AT ALL as a child, i even doubt my mother knew about this show anyway lmao, but reading everyone talking abt it and how it helped them with religious trauma or stuff like this makes me very happy, like i'm glad this show existed even though i discovered its existent via internet and never watched a single episode, anyway everyone be blessed, i'm going to actually watch this video and edit it to post my opinion (yes i'm very late but anyway)
This show was my childhood. I was pretty disappointed to see how drastically it had changed in recent years. It used to have so much more heart and personality. In its earlier days, it may not have looked especially stunning or had the biggest budget, but it definitely had some great writing, acting, and talent behind it. Best of all, it wasn't over the top with its Christian morals. The lessons were always approachable and never pretentious or forced which is kind of a rarity when it comes to religious children's media. Even now as someone who was raised Christian and later became agnostic, I still have an appreciation for the simplistic but effective way that the show introduced kids to complicated moral situations with an often overlooked sense of grace and humor.
Yeah, from what i remember the reason it’s more bearable to non-Christian audiences is the moral was never presented as “God said no, that’s the biggest reason why you shouldn’t do it” it was “This has negative effects on the people around you, ps it also makes our skyman sad”
I didn't even know it was a christian show up until recently. Whenever someone told me about Moses and his exodus, I always thought "Hey that's from veggie tales!"
Honestly I think the reason why so many groups enjoyed VeggieTales was because of the genuine care that went into it. It was wholesome and taught lessons, it was entertaining and kids liked it. Even if you weren't into the whole spiritual thing, many of the stories were easy to follow and relatable, with comedic skits and catchy songs happening in between. In a way, it was like a Saturday Night Live show for kids that was extremely wholesome.
Indeed. That's something that's (ironically) missing from a lot of Christian media, but secular media sometimes suffers too from productions that feel lackluster and careless. Memorable things (remembered for being good at least, not infamous ones) often have a feel of heart and enthusiasm. (And no, simply being brighter and louder doesn't replace that, even if it gets attention)
Yeah, I remember being a kid and not believing in god, not believing the stories, but I loved Veggietales because it was just so entertaining and there was so much love put into it.
@@koalasandwich567 Christian media is mostly sold through Christian bookstores, who receive merchandise through a tiny handful of distributors. If the content creator offends any one of them for whatever reason, they are effectively cancelled. So anything "Christian" has to be politically correct enough to make it through the corporate censors in order to have any chance of reaching their target audience, leaving the end result homogenous and boring. This process may sound familiar.
Growing up in a religious household Veggie Tales was the most watched VHS in my home. I'm no longer religious but I still deeply love Veggie Tales and quote it all the time. The humor, kindness, music, and life lessons were just too good. I also had the Veggie Tales computer game and played that all the time. Barbara Manatee forever.
Fun fact: the puppets were made by a Christian company named, axtell expressions, and they were used for puppet shows! Btw there are only a few of those left in the world so consider yourself lucky!
My mom told me when we were younger and watched VeggieTales the first time she heard them say, “god made you special, and he loves you very much.” She fell in love with the show
@@randomnameidk429 nah that's kinda helped the show grow, you don't see to many actually good Christian shows nowadays, this one is a true diamond in the rough
I absolutely *adored* VeggieTales. I grew up with it from as early as I could remember. I would rewatch the three Larry Boy videos I have with my little sister, rewatch Sweetpea Beauty as often as I wanted, and would buy more VeggieTales shorts as soon as my mom found them and that I really wanted to watch. I especially loved the Christmas shorts and would watch them year-round. Sad to see that the show's gone downhill in recent years. I'm proud of Mr. Vischer, though.
It literally was the perfect show, you get morals and humor (some edgy aka Larry Kissing a Bearded lady) and it never felt like it was pushing it in front of your face. It gives you a neutral experience that appeals to literally everyone
I worked at Big Idea from Feb. of 2001 through April of 2003. My desk was about 20 feet from Mike and Phil's offices. I was there while all of this was happening, and it was the worst thing ever. I survived 2 rounds of layoffs, then got cut in the last round, right after Jonah was released. My name is in the movie credits! In the end, though, it was hands down the most fun place to work, and I was crushed when we all got let go. We got to do the most incredible things. For example, when Star Wars: Attack of the Clones was released, they rented the movie theater next to the mall where we all worked and the entire company got to go over and see it. There were cartoons painted all over the walls in the stair ways (artistic graffiti). I have so many stories. Really amazing.
50:43 A little fun fact I should mention, SaberSpark: The animators on “Robots” who worked at Big Idea Productions before weren’t the only animators who worked on “Robots”. In fact, there are some animators that worked at DNA Productions (behind the Jimmy Timmy Power Hour) who also joined Blue Sky Studios to work on “Robots”.
Despite the sad fate of Veggietales, I think that it will still go down in history as one of the few things most people, regardless of religious background or lack there of, genuinely agree that it’s good. Veggitails’ main moral of loving yourself and god loving you, and everyone being special really hits home for a lot of kids who grew up to have issues with self esteem. People who were even hurt by religious people or people who abused religion to alienate or abuse them, a lot of those people find comfort in that one simple line every video ended on: God made you special. And he loves you very much.
well idk about anyone else, but as a small staunch athiest child - there was a lot of religious drama in my family - I still fuckin' loved veggietales. I'm pretty sure my parents got thoroughly tired of Jonah and the Whale and also me constantly singing the pirate song.
Man, I have never realized how BIG veggie tales was until I watched this video. I grew up watching veggie tales. (I grew up in a Christian family) I am touched by hearing Phil’s story. He had faith in God despite the conditions. After veggie tales “died”, he didn’t question God, but instead he saw his mistakes.
I think at that time, Phil seeking to be the new Walt Disney, he made decisions without first consulting God, he did not realize that he began to idolize his company and money, in his mind he thought he was doing it for God, but his heart did it to want to be like Disney and being famous, that is why God allowed all those things to happen and lost his company, now that he has repented and confessed how he was influenced by the world, God has forgiven him and given him a new opportunity, and he recovered the program to get it right this time
I’m not religious anymore, but I grew up in the LDS church and we watched Veggietales all the time. Even though I’m not in the church anymore, I gladly go back and revisit Veggietales for good old nostalgia sake. ❤
Same, actually - formerly LDS, big Veggietales viewer! The fact that I still remember a *lot* of the Silly Songs by heart after 20 years probably speaks to how well they're made
Girl, all they were saying is that Jesus loves them. Damn, looks like someones sensitive, and they weren't forcing anything? Goes to show how you take everything out of context huh?
As a Christian, myself, thank you for the genuine respect and care you treated the topic of people's religious beliefs. It's refreshing to see someone take time to seriously examine the merits, talent, and creativity the show had to offer instead of simply dismissing it because it's too Christian.
Yhea. ... Though, gotta love the irony in secularism became an opposition religion in its own right. People, like everything, will refuse that despite the truth of the matter.
Phil Vischer: "I lost because I let my own ambition cloud my mission from God. That was my fault." Butch Hartman: "It's not my fault, you're all just weak. God loves me, and mental disorders are fake!" Pop Quiz: who's the REAL Christian here?
Trick answer: Both are. Just because someone claims to be Christian doesn't mean they can't be an asshole. While I don't agree with some actions both men have made throughout their public careers, it's not my position to judge them based on a decision they made to believe in God. Some atheists are nice while some religious people can be absolute zealots.
@@ForcedHandleName I notice the biggest "zealots" tend to be the Born-Agains. I don't wanna shit-talk born-again Christians too much because, hey, they found Christ. I'm not gonna be the asshole who takes the wind out of their sails just because they're riding the faith high, but I'm gonna be honest: every born-again I've ever met turned into a massive dick later down the line. My younger brother (a Catholic) helped a friend out of a bad breakup which resulted in said friend finding Christ. We were happy for him at first, but a few days later he starts preaching to my brother about how his beliefs are all false, that he's worshipping a false church, and that he must renounce his faith and turn to "the True Christian church" before he's doomed to burn in hell for eternity. You can't even talk to the guy anymore without first sitting through a rambling lecture about how worshipping Mary and the Saints is idolatry or how the Pope is the Antichrist here to lead the church astray and other weird nonsense the instant there's an idle moment in the conversation. That said, in Hartman's case, I'm dubious about how "faithful" he is in the first place. Like I get that Christians can be greedy/ignorant too, the Bible itself warns us so, but Hartman comes off more like a pseudo-religious grifter than a obnoxious born-again. No man of the faith charges people money for salvation.
@@ForcedHandleName but just cuz someone claims to be a christian doesnt mean they are. Unless you've accepted jesus into your heart, you arent gettin into heaven. There are blood bought ppl that are a-holes, though.
I was one of those college kids who loved Veggie Tales back in the day. back in the 90s (and even today) solid Christian entertainment that was clever, creative, and cared about telling a good story was rare. The fact that there were references to Monty Python and Airplane in the videos was what made me love the series back then. Good times.
Saame. I didn't even mind going to church because they would play this for the kids in one of the back rooms it was the thing I looked forward to on sundays.
So Phil was a good honest Christian doing God's work. Was corrupted by greed and pride. Lost everything. Then after repenting and admitting his sins got a second chance from Trinity Broadcasting Network. This sounds like a VeggieTales episode on its own.
I actually went to a Barney concert when I was a kid. The show got cancelled half way through because it was hot. Kids actually cried I think I was one of them.

Veggie tales did a good job at portraying the general messages in a fun way, without them directly reading about all the sex and murder that's also in there 😂
It’s amazing when you don’t have to be Christian to enjoy something aimed at Christians. That’s the mark of a good storyteller.

Phil failed for one main reason: he just wasn't a great businessman. He's a dreamer and an artist. He needed someone savvy to run the business side who believed in him and his vision. In an amazing twist of fate and irony, Phil’s story, reflects that of Jonah. He focused on the wrong thing and found himself in the belly of a whale. Then he turned himself around and God blessed his work again.
My name is Khalil.
Shoot that’s REALLY ironic considering the Jonah movie was what dragged them down
Oh wow, you’re completely right! It’s actually kind of scary how ironic that is
Now poor old Jonah
Now he's all Alone-uh
Hi Caleb. Love your covers. Your voice is awesome
Those type of people you describe don’t represent their religion
@@jj2059 I very much agree
Maybe he WAS being guided by God
EDIT: So just to clarify, I'm not saying Phil's success is undeserved. He has a great show with genuinely good morals and humor. What i'm saying is he was inordinately lucky; to an extent that nobody could ever possibly hope to replicate it. It wasn't supposed to be a dig at him.
Feels kinda mean. But yeah pretty much
So a less-worse version of Chris-Chan who actually gained popularity in a good way?
I think the anonymous doner was actually a time traveler that knew the potential of VeggieTales.
You’re ignoring the fact that the end product was one of rare quality.

So glad Phil got his show back in a way he’s happier with. Seems like a stand up dude. So glad there wasn’t some falling out between him and Mike, I was waiting for that drop.
Me too. Something similar to the ID software breakup.
I'm honestly just impressed Phil had the humility to accept his overambition and selfishness. Not everyone can do that.
Nintendotron64 I respect that he took that responsibility. I personally didn’t see a lot of selfishness or over-ambition to be honest. Maybe he could be accused of some lack of responsibility or leadership when he didn’t make sure his company was safe with a contract. Removing a big part of anything leads to ruin. All those parts influence each other to make the formula .
During the video the mention of divorce was something in the show business called “foreshadowing”
I guess Phil should have spent a few years in Marceline. Then he would have been totally successful!

Yeah bibleman ws amazing for all the 'wrong' reasons.

Good Christian Media is a rarity these days. And for every example that exists like VeggieTales, I would root for it for all times.
Ha, you said root.
To be fair, good christian media has always been a rarity in the modern world lol

I love how it wasn't super preachy
It was just the right enough of preachy.
@@CasperVonGhoul exactly
I think Chirstian media often puts the horse before the cart
Yeah, I remember being a kid and not believing in god, not believing the stories, but I loved Veggietales because it was just so entertaining and there was so much love put into it.

Christian media is mostly sold through Christian bookstores, who receive merchandise through a tiny handful of distributors. If the content creator offends any one of them for whatever reason, they are effectively cancelled.
So anything "Christian" has to be politically correct enough to make it through the corporate censors in order to have any chance of reaching their target audience, leaving the end result homogenous and boring.
This process may sound familiar.
The changes in artstyle to make it "more modern" kill so many franchises. It's a shame how few industries pay mind to that

People who were even hurt by religious people or people who abused religion to alienate or abuse them, a lot of those people find comfort in that one simple line every video ended on:

My younger brother (a Catholic) helped a friend out of a bad breakup which resulted in said friend finding Christ. We were happy for him at first, but a few days later he starts preaching to my brother about how his beliefs are all false, that he's worshipping a false church, and that he must renounce his faith and turn to "the True Christian church" before he's doomed to burn in hell for eternity.
