His two female backup singers were stuck in traffic and didn't make the show so the band members tried their best to sing the backup vocals.
The female backup singers really make a difference in the studio version versus this live performance, still iconic, but.........
I think I could sing better then the backup singers and that's saying something, but great performance by Cocker....raw.
gives true meaning to the song title huh? getting help from his friends lol
This was Woodstock, so "stuck in traffic" probably means they were backstage tripping balls, and unable to go out on stage.
Half a million people at that concert... That performance was just tuesday for Joe Cocker... That's how he approached every performance... He left it all on the stage every time...
We took a wrong turn and ended up in Quebec. They didn't want military aged men from the USA there. I came back home and joined the military in November.
The film, Woodstock is a documentary that is worth every minute. Oscar winner.
He is very passionate when he sings "You are so beautiful." A must hear song.
Joe was the real deal. The music moved him and he moved us. I miss this kind of passion in music. It’s really hard to find these days.
PASSION ? GOTTA hear that girl ... The JAZZ Singer .....my brain leaves me .... She searched too far ... She was at Woodstock ..... Billy Joel ?
If you want a singer with passion in the modern day, I'll point you straight to Chris Stapleton.
A music generation that will never be equaled.
That’s the Gospel truth for real. I was 22 months old at the time. Would be at the top of my list of things to do come hell or high water. Nothing in history matches the music of that era.
Absolutely correct. This era was the soundtrack to my High School life. Every band was killer back then and they were all unique.
Joe really was at his best live. His Mad Dogs and Englishmen tour absolutely rocked.
After his Woodstock show, John Lennon and Paul McCartney talked with Joe during a visit to Abbey road (EMI) studios. The pleaded with him to cover more of their songs, the way he does it. He obliged by recording, "She came in through the bathroom window" next.
@@elfcounsul he also got hits out of “the letter” by the box tops, and “feeling all right” by traffic.
I remember hearing this in middle school as a kid in Romania, I didn't understand a word but I was left in tears... yet smiling. It's been about 3 decades, I've learned English since and... nothing changed 🥲❤ RIP 🖤
@s1mplex. It must be a glorious discovery to hear all this music years after.
There is another TH-cam video of the same song where someone has added graphics for all the mispronunciations!
Joe Cocker was an English singer known for his gritty, bluesy voice & dynamic stage performances that featured expressive body movements. He recorded a few Beatles' songs "With A Little Help From My Friends", "She Came In Through The Bathroom Window" & "Something". Other hit songs were "You Are So Beautiful", "Up Where We Belong" (a duet with Jennifer Warnes), "Delta Lady", "Darling Be Home Soon", "Cry Me A River", "Feelin' Alright", "The Letter" etc.
You Are So Beautiful is one of the most emotional songs you ever going to hear....
Think he was an apprentice Gas Fitter before he started singing professionally.
Joe and Leon Russell worked closely for several years with Joe doing several of Leon's songs. Leon was the musical director for the "cast of thousands" of the Mad Dogs and Englishmen tour.
Because it was Woodstock, Joe put every ounce of himself into this performance. It is the BEST version of this song by him or anyone ever. Complaining about the guitar players singing backup is ridiculous. It's now part of the performance and history. The studio version is fine but it's in a studio, this is Woodstock.
Jimmy Page plays guitar on that song and several more on the lp of the same title as the song.
Got it when it came out.
IIRC Joe's backup singers got delayed past the stage time and the band had to pitch in for the admittedly off backup parts.
The guitarist and bass player singing backup was so good. My brother was there and saw this . One of the first things he told me when he got home, clothes covered in dried mud, was about the backup singing in this song.
I do like the Beatles, but Joe Cocker's version is -- hands down -- the *best* version of this song.
And Joe's version of "The Letter" is the best arrangement of that song, IMO.
Joe looks like he is having a seizure when he sings but damn he can sing. He sings You Are So Beautiful like he really means it.
John Belushi used to do quite the imitation of him on the original Saturday Night Live
His performance of feeling alright with mad dogs with leon Russell is legendary seizure Joe cocker performance.
one of the top 5 most famous live rock performances of all time
Joe took a 'quiet' melodic and 'sing-a-long' song, from possibly the best album ever, from possibly the best band; ever - and took it to a whole new level - very special!
Every performer and band at Woodstock had their greatest day ever.
I saw them in concert with the Moody Blues and Chuck Berry. They were incredible!
Joe didn't just sing from his heart... he sang from every fiber of his body! 😳😎
Joe Cocker only had one car in his entire life, a 1995 Jaguar XJ-12. He learned how to drive in this car. And when he died my parents bought it from his estate. Several of his personal things were still in there, such as his eyeglasses.
Exactly. A conductor. He feels every note. RIP joe cocker. You were a stand alone rock star 🤘❤️
Music's finest moment....he left his heart on stage
The best cover of a Beatles song ever.
One of the biggest moments of Woodstock
Agree!! and my least favorite Beatles song (I love Ringo, but NEVER let him sing)
Another great cover is John Farnham singing ‘Help’ with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra.
@@PortnoyEric He has been singing for decades and is damn good. He has taken singing lessons. However, when he was new in the Beatles he presented himself by drumming like mad and singing a rock 'n' roll song, sang very well.
When separately asked who the best male blues singer of their generation was both Ray Charles and Smokey Robinson both immediately answered "Joe Cocker".
The Beatles wrote this song but after hearing Joe do his version Paul McCartney said it’s his song now.
Reminds me of Trent from NIN and Jonny Cash. Jonny covered their song "hurt", and Trent said the same thing. That song belongs to Jonny now.
@@adampindellDitto Bob Dylan / Jimi Hendrix - All Along The Watchtower
I put a spell on you, beautiful song from Joe. May he RIP
To the moment in time that lasts forever. This will be appreciated by anyone willing to listen
We surely had the best music back in the day.
Woodstock was a cultural touchstone that started as a music festival offering "Three days of peace and music." and exploded into half a million people spread over a farmer's fields in 1969.
Fortunately the organizers had camera crews filming most everything. That produced a movie that's worth watching.
Woodstock (named after the nearby town of Woodstock in upstate New York) was arguably the epitome of the days of drugs, love, peace and protest. As the comedian Robin Williams aptly stated, "If you remember being at Woodstock, you weren't there".
My parent weren't willing to let me fly to the States for it (let alone pay for it) because they figured that at sixteen I was to young.
I still get goosebumps with his unique voice
Me too. Amazing I've been hearing this since 1977, and still I'm deeply moved.
‘Feeling’ Alright’ !
Goosebumps everytime...
Our music was different back then : real , pure and honest ! And Joe gave all in every concert .
One of the best rock singers to come out of the UK. RIP Joe.
Just let him sing !
Joe truly sings from his heart and soul. He feels the music and it channels through him.
Anyone else still think of the show wonder years when they hear this?😄
Hi Emma - Joe Cocker was born on the 20th May 1944 and he Died on the 22nd December 2014.
A nice couple of songs 🎵 he sings are Delta Lady which is another lively song 🎵 just like With a little help from my Friends from 1969 and a beautiful slow song 🎵 from 1974 which is called You are so Beautiful . Best wishes .
Emma, I think for a few minutes there you were transported right back to 1969!
The Woodstock Music Festival was in upstate New York, on farmland. This is a cover of the Beatles song from 1967. Joe was an incredible singer..in the likes of Elvis and Linda Ronstadt, he had the uncanny ability to make other peoples music his own. The studio version was used as the theme song for the US tv show The Wonder Years.
As a Londoner,I assumed, for 50 years, that Woodstock was in California:)
@@JuniorFarquar 2 other solo pop/rock vocalists that had extremely successful careers doing the same thing. Performing songs written by other people. Quite often, their covers would become the most recognized version of the song, thanks to their gifted voices and artistry.
@@IsleofskyeHumpty Dumpty sat on a wall and Cali fell into the sea !
It was the first cover of a Beatles song, that I felt was a worthy of a standing ovation.
"Feelin' Alright?" Another great performance/song by Joe Crocker.
Joe Cocker felt everything he sang deeply, deeply. You probably noted his almost spastic movements on stage -- he just let the music move him.
This was an amazing performance by one of the greatest blues singers of all time. I also enjoyed seeing you, as a young person, getting into this music and clearly moved by the passion of his performance.
If you're a rocker named "Cocker", you've got to let it all hang out ... and he did, he did! Left everything on stage.
"Unchain my Heart" the official video(I think) by Joe Cocker is one I love
thought he would blow his cords by the 70's but he still sounded fantastic into the 2000's
My mind is dancing through the smoke and leather with Joe. With Joe. Together we are in one moment.😊❤
Joe Cocker.....before his full time singing career was a gas fitter from Sheffield, South Yorkshire in the North of England, I saw him live with the Greaseband before this & during his set, he introduced their upcoming new release "With a Little Help from My Friends"....& the rest is history 😊👍
I love how you analyse these songs. I could listen to you all day... The backing vocals on this were shocking!!! Hahaha.....
The best cover of a Beatles song ever.
Welcome kids, this is real music
Joe cocker just fitted in perfectly with the music and the times of the 70s
John Belushi did an excellent impression on SNL.
My home town boy, absolute legend, RIP. Will never be another singer like him.
He was the first of this sort of white whiskey voices that have since become seemingly ubiquitous. As they say, the original is still the greatest. This was part of the soundtrack of everyone of my generation.
His voice is his characteristic. One of a million. Saw him in a big screen in the cinema in the movie Woodstock. You must look up for this movie, lot a great artist there. Already see comments foor other songs from him. Love his raw voice. You must listen to other songs from him.
The stand in back up vocals just give you proof of the fact that it's live. 😆❤️✌️
the lift is up where we belong, Joe & Jennifer Warnes 👍👍🇬🇧🇬🇧
Woodstock baby.... 500,000 groovy people get together for a weekend of fun love and music ✌️🙂
He was one of a kind. Awesome!!
I always think of John Belushi imitating Joe Cocker on SNL, back when it was worth watching.
You’re the best Emma.
Glad you got to experience one of the legends.
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
RIP Joe
Probably, the only one of The Beatles 230 Songs that sounded better than the original as Paul McCartney acknowledged.
As soon as the music started, Joe basically became one with it. It showed how in tune he was with it by his full body movement with it.
joe sang from the soul, he put his whole mind, body, and soul into his performance.
I always loved Joe cocker
A most legendary performance of a Beatles' song at the most famous concert ever Woodstock.
He brings tears of joy to my eyes, every time for decades
Every time I hear Joe sing this , it instills such emotion!
Primal is the word that comes to mind when I hear this Joe Cocker performance.
I love his Woodstock performance, and for me, can listen to his version of " something's coming on " a few times in succession. Just magical.
Another Great British singer (born in Sheffield, Yorkshire.) that helped shape the music world in the 60's.
I like how you get into our older Pop/Rock styles we loved thru the 60's and 70's. You would have been a fan of Rock.
Saw Cocker years ago. IT WAS CRAZY. The great Eric Gale and Stuff were warm up band. Then Eric fetches Joe, brings him to mic and wraps his hands around stand to hold Joe. Eric sits down with sheet music. THEY JAM!
Joe was certainly getting by with a little help from his friends on that stage 😊😊
This was the great Woodstock music festival.... @ 400,000+ people on Max Yasgur's farm near Woodstock, New York
The greatest time to be alive in the United States this late 60s up until the late 70s. We had the best music, the best bands, the best concerts live.
Joe performed the most incredible cover of this Beatles song, whew!
Saw him twice live in my life. Unbelievable power and presence in a live performance.
I used to work with Joes uncle in Manchester [ the real Manchester in England] in the 60s. The resemblence was remarkable. We used to ask him to mime this !
Oh my God. Joe making it real. Very rare. Reminds me of Janice.
One of the best acid performances ever
I love old rocking Joe Cocker. Some of his best old songs were The Letter (live from Mad Dogs & Englishman), High Time We Went, Feelin Alright, Woman to Woman, ...
For a studio sampling of Jor's voice try the album "I Can Stand A Little Rain," released in 1974, five years after Woodstock.
I am only here because of the title, "Joe Cocker Rocks!"
100% true, literally and figuratively!
Joe was one of those singers when you hear his voice once you never forget his name
Shelter Me is a great song he did in the 1980's. That voice was amazing...
Love that you are loving Joe.
Let it flow honey. Peace
Great reaction. You say you want to see more. One of his best 'full' concerts is the Dortmund concert. It is on TH-cam. Watch it all because it is perfection (both the band and him).
So blessed to have seen him live. Love, love, love Joe. RIP brother!!! Check out his double live album, "Joe Cocker Live".
That look you had! 😂😂😂 This has to be my favourite reaction ever from this channel. You have to love Joe Cocker. He lives his songs. For a more sensitive side, check out, “You Are So Beautiful”. It’s stunning
A true one of one. She Came in Through the Bathroom Window is also amazing!
The great and the good were at Woodstock and the whole festival was stolen by one little man from Sheffield, absolutely stunning voice
"He sings from the heart". Absolutely 100% correct Emma❤
Without any doubt, this is the most intense, dramatic and soulful live performance of any singer ever
I was blessed to have seen him perform. Incredible from start to finish.
You really should try his version of You are so Beautiful - different vocals and tone, beautiful for a vocalist to analyse. Best version ever and comes from his heart
Joe cocker was the male version of Janis Joplin ❤
And yet Joe was a very mellow guy offstage. Janis was never mellow.
Both blues singers with psychedelic rock bands backing them.
Yes!
As in - only the tasteless liked either of them.
Nothing like it.
