    Based on the trailers that I have seen, Ryan Gosling nailed the performance better than anyone could have expected. An award winning performance, for sure. But, I must say. It is rare when the actual, real life man, is more epic than Hollywood's portrayal of him. In this case, the real Neil Armstrong, was more epic. I was 11 year old when Armstrong landed on the moon, but, I knew who he was before, and after the landing, and he was more epic before and after, then anyone I have ever seen. One of the few greatest men of all time.

    I'm really looking forward to seeing this, and I say that as someone who stopped going to the movies several years ago.
    There is a mindset in society these days that results in space travel being taken for granted. Even at the time of the Apollo missions, public interest waned after the first landing.
    But when you stop for a second and think about what these people did, it's a staggering human achievement. One of the reasons I love NASA is that it is a living example of our species at its best. It's the embodiment of human curiosity and endeavour, writ large.

      As a proud Brit I concede to the fact there has been no greater achievement in the history of mankind, certainly in regards to the extremely optimal use of available technology and teamwork, than the Moon Shot. Hoax believer's brains are simply to dim to fully appreciate such a feat and write it off as impossible, thus their only other explanation is a hoax. Such ignorance of science I find staggering and deeply disturbing.

      I have seen the movie - one screw-up of epic proportions - if everything is about the landing, such a culmination point in this movie - make it reasonably real, do not fly over a cartoonish terrain. The last 2 miles before landing in real Apollo 11 had nothing to do with what they showed in this movie.

    The technical aspects of the movie were very good. I felt the music score was rather ominous, however, that’s simply a personal preference. I felt Neil’s interaction with family and colleagues was aloof and distant. This may be a similar characteristic with many astronauts at the time. Many of the astronaut wives called their husbands and colleagues one lobbers, meaning they were so focused on the mission and their careers that often the world around them was shut out.

    "Dad was really a kind of funny guy....a dry wit", so said the son on the left in the video.
    There are many, many photos and videos of Neil Armstrong grinning broadly and laughing out loud, so the son certainly knows what he is talking about. But, then how come, if Ryan Gosling gave such a spot on performance, did we see Neil portrayed by Gosling as having no sense of humor at all. Only a few scenes of Gosling smiling and certainly none of him laughing out loud. I think that is just Gosling doing his own personal style of acting. Staring, stoic, and intense, almost wholly devoid of personality, just as he is in almost all of his movies.
    Otherwise, yes, it is one heck of a movie. The technical achievement in sound and effects during the lift offs in the two launch scenes really set the bar higher for astronaut movies to come. But you gotta' watch FIRST MAN in HD and full surround sound to get the full effects. If you are the kind of person who watches movies on your ipad or iphone, you are screwing yourself out of one awesome flick.

    • @paulmichaelfreedman8334
      @paulmichaelfreedman8334 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Google that, the director explained why they didn't show the flag raising. For one, it took them close to an hour to get the telescoping part to come out to hang the flag on. Otherwise it would have hung limp (no air). It was more hassle than a great moment for them. And the movie was about the man, not the mission.

    • @3dartistguy
      @3dartistguy 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      and yet the Man, Neil armstrong,the man, took the time to raise the American flag on the moon.

    • @memphisflashfan1
      @memphisflashfan1 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I thought it was because the movie wanted to primarily focus on the complexity of Armstrong as an individual- the long term personal impact of his grief and resulting emotional containment - rather than the American goal of beating the Russians to the moon and the whole national security dimension of the Space program. One of the long shots on the surface of the moon did show the flag was up so clearly it had been done. So I guess the focus was less about the mission and more about who was this man selected to carry out the greatest technology feat in history and what was his personality that could bear the weight of the post mission responsibility. But I understand- when the press about the movie first came out and we learned the flag raising ceremony wasn’t included, I was also disappointed in that but then I came to consider that it was more of a biographical snapshot of Armstrong the man. I was a big follower of the space program - I was 14 years old when this took place and I cared a lot about it. I also thought they didn’t show more of his sense of humor. There are film clips of his touring Vietnam with Bob Hope’s USO shows where he is very funny. For example, two female soldiers asked him about women in the space program and he opened his arms wide saying, “I welcome them with open arms.” The funniest clip was when a soldier asked him how much he was paid for going to the moon. Oh my. He went through this lengthy explanation about having government housing (the spacecraft), free food and on and on. So he ended up earning some ridiculous amount like $14 or something. But the way he went through it was comical. And later when pilot Chester Sullenberger safely glided the United flight into the Hudson River, Armstrong was the speaker at a ceremony at Indiana University and welcomed him into the Society of Aviators who land in Strange Places. Anyway, I felt that dimension could have had just a bit more of that side of him but I guess it would have reduced the emphasis of his daughter’s death.

      @@memphisflashfan1 liberal hollywood is always the same old story. emphasize the bad things the US does and downplay the good things that the US does. Since the moon landing was soley an American accomplishment, lets downplay that the US accomplished this historic meaningful feat. Neil Armstrong was an American and a white male too boot so lets deemphasize moon landing as an American accomplishment by not including hardly any shots of the American flag on the moon.

    It's cool to hear Armstrong's children speak a bit about their lives, and the movie. Having said that, the movie was a terrible disappointment. It's TERRIBLE storytelling to start with - mostly a stringing together of vignettes that do little more than establish, and reestablish, and confirm, and reconfirm, that Neil Armstrong was taciturn - and could be a bit challenging to have as a spouse/husband as a result. There was VERY little exploration of the complexities of Armstrong's personality, the relationships that were important in his life - they are ALL dealt with in an exceptionally superficial manner - all in the shadow of Gosling's overindulgent scenes establishing just how detached Armstrong could be. This include his wife, his children, Ed White, Elliott See, Buzz Aldrin, etc. The humor the sons speak of? I can remember one line in the film depicting quasi humor (challenging a Buzz Aldrin "no filter" observation regarding deceased fellow astronauts). No, wait - there was another, where he tells his son to stand in the corner and he and his wife enjoy the humor in the situation - I wanted a LOT more scenes like this establishing depth of character along with scenes showing just how exceptionally highly regarded he was as a pilot and engineer throughout his career. Didn't happen. They did build some scenes in that showed some of the political and human challenges encountered in the rush to put a man on the moon - but they didn't come together to tell the story in the way the directors and writers did with Apollo 13 or The Right Stuff, or nearly every other film about the early US space program.
    Even the action scenes are rather poorly executed, jumbles of images crashing around/across the screen with liberal doses of crash zooms and other effects. Even the shots of the moon's surface that were so agonizingly lavished over in terms of time on screen were distorted & disappointingly fake. The scenes shown in Apollo 13 - more than a decade ago - were far more realistic appearing - and the action sequences in that and other movies were significantly more convincingly rendered.
    Some cast members seem to have been chosen with little regard to their appearance. Gus Grissom, Deke Slayton, and Buzz Aldrin were played by Shea Whigham (50), Jason Clark (50), Kyle Chandler (53), and Corey Stall (42). The astronauts they played were all at least 10 years younger - and exceptionally fit. Only Clark looked anything like the character he played, both in terms of features and general fitness/age levels. Further, Corey Stall's depiction of Buzz Aldrin - which suffered mostly by being so brief - was so far from the engineering wunderkind/pilot that he was and served mostly as a foil to Armstrong - was very disappointing. All of these actors are outstanding - but save for Clark were all miscast.
    Finally, the music scoring a good portion of the film was bizarre - never lyrical, never lilting, never really majestic, but oddly synthetic and displeasing.
    What a great subject for a film. And what a sad endeavor this particular attempt to tell the story proved to be.

    I’m sorry, but the portrayal of Neil...and pretty much everyone else...was miserable. They didn’t seem like real people cuz the only emotions anyone expresses is sadness or anger or grim determination. It’s so grim it strips the characters of any true humanity for the sake of keeping that tone through the movie. It sucked. The flight and space sequences were f’in amazing and terrifying especially in imax... but they missed the mark with the tone and the character portrayal. Made me wanna watch Apollo 13.
    I’m sure Neil was a stoic dude in real life, but even his sons said he joked around. I don’t remember a single joke or any sense of humor. And his sons right there say it was an important part of who he was. Well where the heck was that in the movie????

    • @forsaken841
      @forsaken841 6 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      The consistent tone hurt the movie in my opinion too. Cuz when the really grim things happen, you don’t really feel it cuz the whole movie feels that way.

      Aw, you forget that they were all test pilots, and were conditioned not to get all excited when something happened. They were trained to keep their emotions under control, and someone like Neil was already in that mindset. When something happened he just moved on to the next job as you can see in this overview of how he cheated death numerous times as a pilot and astronaut. th-cam.com/video/N5puOcOAJRM/w-d-xo.html

      in real life, it blew down as soon as they took off, and that was not shown in the film either. Not showing the planting in the film is such a silly thing to focus on. The current NASA administrator just said last month, "We are not going to the moon to plant flags"... that was such a minor part of the amazing accomplishment .
