    Review and tutorial on the new 2017 GoPro Karma Drone. This is on the re-released version that "hopefully" no longer falls out of the sky. I haven't had any issues like in the first release of the drone, no battery connectivity issues. It has also been brought to my attention that I neglected to mention the video quality of the GoPro Hero 5 Black Edition. I think the video looks excellent although may be a little unsaturated. The image sensor in the Hero 5 is the same that’s in the Hero 4 Black so if you have had the camera you should know what to expect. Enjoy!
    Thanks,
    Chad

    I was gonna get the mavic pro but the fact that you get the go pro, grip and drone in this package sold me.

    I just got my Karma drone. And it does have Follow now. It also has the ability to circle around a selected object. I haven't flown mine, yet. After I do, I might reconsider if there are issues that I find unacceptable. What also makes it attractive is the inclusion of the handle allowing you to create stabilized footage on foot. The problem with returning it, is that if I do what you did, and buy another GoPro camera and the handle separately, AND another drone, than I'm really spending a ton of money. Is that choice really worth it? I'll have to see for myself, whether or not I would consider making a similar choice. Wish me luck. Maybe they added firmware that makes it fly better? We shall see.

    How old is this article? It has Cable Cam which follows you where you go. Also has a mode that it will circle around you. Not sure if you have the most up to date model or aren't familiar with the drones features.

    • @WolfHunter1043
      @WolfHunter1043  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Hector L I cover both of those. They aren't intelligent modes as discussed. For cable came you are setting the point a and point b by placing the drone there then it flies between those two points. Whereas other drone can follow an object using sensors and maintain safety from obstacles. Same with the circle mode.

    I just picked up a Karma and I agree with a lot of this. However my main reason for keeping it is the versatility and that the drone was essentially made for Go Pro users. I like that I don't have to connect my phone to use as a controller, the backpack is fairly compact and holds all the components, in my opinion the drone isn't that loud, the included detachable gimbal is a huge plus, and setup is fairly simple. Good review though

      +Initial Arts you are correct. I rather spend more and buy the gimbal and a second drone but all of your points are correct. It's very veritable and a pain to use your phone with other drones.

    Great even keeled review. I like how you basically stuck to the facts. Not sure if you have tried the latest "version" but they did add a lot of the things you said were missing like follow me, etc. They actually also added some default pre-programmed cinematic flight paths to the software as well. Again, great review. You just gained a subscriber.

    Good review, only comment. If you like the handle, and the hero 5,' don't buy them separate, for a couple hundred dollars more you can keep it all. Drone, handle, hero 5 and nice case. It is not as stable as Mavic pro, but I have both and like them both for different reasons. GoPro camera is awesome and the revel and droneie mode is great. Auto land and RTH on Mavic hands down the best. Not sure why speed is such a factor for everyone. It's a camera platform so slow is better, I guess you may be following some action shot.

    Hey WolfHunter, thanks for posting your well-thought-out and helpful review. A few thoughts: 1.) I bought my Karma only after reading numerous "Karma vs. Mavic" reviews. The edge seemed to go to Karma. As per usual, as soon as I received mine, all the reviews went in the complete opposite direction to the Mavic. But that's what always happens, lol. 2.) I own a production company and got tired of paying 13 year olds $500 a pop for my aerial shoots. So after 3 shoots by myself, this thing will have already paid for itself and then some. 3.) I got the Karma for it's reported ease-of-use for first time drone operators. I was up and flying the first day, and I generally take a while to learn new equipment. 4.) That being said, mine doesn't drift like yours did... Not even close. Perhaps you got a bum model? I dunno. And finally, 5.) I agree with not being able to explain GoPro's somewhat mystifying omission of object-avoidance sensors on the Karma, but after I learn the ropes on it, I will most assuredly be getting the Mavic for tight-quarters shooting (although I will be keeping the Karma as I feel that the camera is slightly better). Thanks again!

    This was my dilemma before on the Gopro Karma that I need my drone to follow me when I drive my ATV in the wilderness and I thought Karma does not have these features when I viewed your segment. You made me believe that there are none existing features until I contacted the GoPro helpline and lo and behold, there are features. I literally tested it and it worked.
    I think you need to update your video posting because there are ample features such as: 'Follow me', 'Orbit', Cable, and etcetera. You will be able to avail this if your Karma drone is on the flight already. Check it out. It is cool features.

    This is a bit outdated. A couple of software updates have fixed a couple of these issues. Also, my GoPro karma drone hovers in place perfectly. If I'm below a bunch of trees, however, it makes it hard for GPS to keep it in place.

      Appreciate the feedback. I just had the Mavic in a wooded area two days ago capturing some footage. Needed it to hover at about 10 feet and within about 2 feet of two trees. Using the optical flow sensors on the bottom and tripod mode for very minimal adjustments it worked perfectly. It stayed in place as if it was on a real tripod. I am quickly beginning to trust it more than any other drone.

  • @TobiasRieper47
    @TobiasRieper47 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    This almost looks like a DJI advert... I'm quite convinced the dense trees caused it to have so many issues hovering in place. Also, I'm happy to see they listened to feedback and added the modes you were missing.
    It's object detection, battery life and speed won't be as good as the competition, but the versatility of the whole platform, the future proofing a drone by making the camera upgradable and the general filming experience and quality more than makes up for it.

    I've done all the calibration and mine sits pretty still, especially without any wind. I'm going to test hovering more though however.

    • @WolfHunter1043
      @WolfHunter1043  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Scott Thomas the cameras gimbal routinely loses its center and needs to be recalibrated. As for hovering, no matter what I do it wanders. With less wind its noticed less but my Mavic doesn't move regardless. That's my biggest issue, it can't follow me, and I can't leave it to hover in place because it needs watched.

    • @TheScottThomas
      @TheScottThomas 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      WolfHunter1043 Yeah the follow me feature is something I really wanted. I got the Karma over the Mavic due to the price and value (Gimbal, Backpack, Controller, video/picture quality) as I'm really more concerned with video/picture quality than anything else. The Mavic is a good drone though and I love the size and battery life of it.

    • @WolfHunter1043
      @WolfHunter1043  7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      +Scott Thomas I was in the same boat as you which is why I still recommend the Karma for certain people. It is a great value with the versatility of having the drone, separate gimbal, and Gopro. For me, I decided on buying the gimbal (already had the GoPro), and then the Mavic. Both are great setups though. In the end, you're paying $400 for the Karma drone if you separate all the components instead of $1000 for the Mavic, pretty affordable for the Karma...

    A friend gave me theirs after crashing it and I think this thing is great. All my other drones I fly in Acro mode, first time flying with altitude locked self leveling. Holy shit this was a spiritual experience, so relaxing flying this thing around, buttery smooth. I thought flying Acro was relaxing and I can do it really smooth, but man, just cruising this thing around is completely different. No rolls, flips or dives or anything like that, but cruises around nice, and the Hero 6 Black edition takes some damn good video especially with the gimbal. Does what I want and price was right.

    i thought Go Pro was a serious company........but they are not.........my point? they screwed up the first release of the Karma a few months back....and now, instead of getting their act together, they rush to release V2.0 , only to find out that again it has some serious issues........honestly, what were they thinking? Loved your review buddy, and i admit it made an impression to me that through your comparison with others, you hardly mention any other brand, unlike some other funboys here, reviewing only to mention a specific brand, instead of focusing on the drone in hand......keep up the good work my friend,

    I actually purchased this drone from BestBuy about a month ago. First, let me say that this is the first drone I have purchased or flown, but according to GoPro this drone was made for folks like me. I am new to drones, new to GoPro and they claim I am their target audience. So I bought in and ponied up $1200 (kit plus a battery). I was enjoying using the Karma but on three separate occasions while trying to land the Karma it would take off just a few feet from the ground while landing. It shot straight up in the air, I let go of the joysticks (manual and videos says it sould stop and hover) and it rose like a bullet and flew straight off. I had GPS and the battery was about 3-4 minutes left and was landing per the controller instructions. THe first time I was able to get the Karma to respond and land safely, the second time it took off and almost flew into electrical wires. I was also able to finally (and just before it almost hit the wires) get Karma to come back down and land. Again, GPS was on and trying to land before the battery low warning came on. And now the third and sadly final time it took off on its own. I was again trying to land Karma and it shot straight up in the air and took off forward lodging itself 60 feet in the air in a top branch of a tree. A few moments later the battery fell out of the Karma. And there it sits in a tree until I can A) pay a tree guy/gal to go up and retrieve it or B) try and shoot it down which will probably end up destroying the drone, camera and gimble. Since, I spent all of my money on the drone and extra batteries and props I cannot afford to pay someone to retrieve it. If you are thinking about buying this, DON'T. Wait until GoPro can get this thing fixed properly. Otherwise, be prepared to have $1200 stuck in a tree mocking you all while you fight the urge to throw up. I am gutted that I foolishly spent this money and stupid enough to believe the hype.

    First, let me say everything is while riding my bicycle out in the mountains or by the beach - always in a backpack, with extra lenses and cameras etc.
    Love the portability of the Mavic - HATE the camera! Love the Phantom 3 4K Camera - still portable but bigger. On ALL DJIs, the updates have made it almost unusable with the NFZ warning in places that in the middle of now where so I was thinking about the Karma. Not a fan of GoPro, but if it does the job, it will work. The BEST I have used and have is the Typhoon H, hands down, end of story. Way bigger, but I have lugged it on my back up the mountains while riding, the its follow feature is flawless. It is also more versatile in that it will allow two controllers - one on camera, one of flying. But it is BIG. Thank you for this review!

    Wolf, good video with lots of good information that will help those in searching for a drone. I do have some retort to the reasons why you don't like it, but also maybe a few reasons why many people would. Long, but hopefully provides good info.
    To begin, I think too many try to compare this drone to others like the varied DJI drones, though it is really an Apples to Oranges comparison. I will touch on this with some of your complaints and later in why for some it is actually better than drones like the Mavic Pro.
    To the reason why you are returning it.
    1- No sensors and drift. The newest DJI drones are rock steady. There is no denying they far exceed the Karma in this area, however the issue is not that of GPS, but instead the sensors. GPS accuracy for these consumer drones just like navigation is 10' at best. The DJI products don't prevent drift through GPS, but instead it is a collaborative effort with the sensors on the drone itself locking the position in, so they will compensate. It is barely if just rarely noticeable during flight, or auto paths. When you ascend with the Karma, this drift is all but unnoticeable in video even while hovering. It does not impact most aerial composition in that regard. As for tripod mode, I think I will just take the Hero off and put on an actual tripod. Also note that drift is not to be confused with instability. This Karma is remarkably stable and very easy to fly, especially in learning mode. In that regard, I am confident in my 10 year olds ability to fly this and it's not easy entrusting a kid with a $1K bill...
    2 - No follow me. This is one of those items I wished the Karma had. This is certainly possible within he confines of the Hero itself, so hopefully it is something they can implement in a future flash. At the same time, maybe the lack of sensors for obstacle avoidance is why they have not done this since it poses a safety risk; especially for those who tend not to be the most responsible pilots. I will speak to the sensors later as well.
    3 - Horizon issue. Yes, I have seen it a few times in hundreds of flights. While rebooting the Karma resolved the issue, if you don't recognize it immediately, a single click of the button in post will resolve it there. Additionally, the newest flash claims to have resolved it. I have not seen it happen since, but time will tell.
    4 - Speed; this one I don't get. What is the fascination with speed? Video quality is always better at slower speeds even citing the old adage "Once you think your pan is slow enough, slow it down even more". While motion is critical to great video composition, almost all video situations are improved with less of it. Speed kills video. Regardless 32. vs. 35 seems to be one of those technical specs that will be different based on environment, but again, so what? And the Mav is faster? Ok. How exactly does that help me in video, or conserving of precious battery time? Make no mistake, 30MPH is fast for a radio control flying object. I don't see an issue beyond spec wars.
    Noise; this is a 2lb drone which is far heavier than the Mavic, so it makes perfect sense that it is louder. Regardless, I am not sure where noise is a factor as you won't use audio for aerial video, so the only other factor would be stealth. In that regard, you should not be trying to film people without their consent, or wildlife per harassment. So, why is this an issue?
    Now to the comparisons between the Karma and other drones; in this instance let's say the Mavic Pro. All too often it seems people like to make direct comparisons, when the reality is they are very different animals. Similar to a BMW and a truck. The bimmer allows me to ride the pavement in style and even will automatically brake for me while I am trying to wipe the foam off my latte. The truck will go all the same places as the BMW, certainly less comfort or style, but I can take it off road in the middle of nowhere, tow a boat, throw camping gear in, etc. For some, maybe many, the truck is a much better value and affords flexibility.
    Here is where the Karma blows away the Mavic and other drones, and must I say a huge reason I own the Karma. It offers flexibility which affords much better value.
    The Karma affords you the ability not just to obtain amazing aerial video, it also allows you to remove the camera and use it for on land, water, or even underwater applications. It is one of the best action cameras out there for this purpose.
    On the drone, it's flexibility and quality surpasses that of the Mavic or Phantom 4 allowing many different options be int increasing FOV, to color grading, white balance, EV and more. The Mavic's camera has issues with quality from being soft, to poor color representation, etc. The optics are inferior, with a narrow FOV to compensate for its downfall. It still takes very good video; great video actually, but the lack of settings in the air allows less composition than the Karma. Speaking to quality, this is potentially the never ending spec argument where most will never notice unless you compare side by side. Either way, Hollywood has used both these drones, so that tells you quality is there. The reality is that the weak link will most often be the pilot and their abilities, not the camera, nor the drone (Mavic vs.Karma).
    More in my reply...

    • @BPRescue
      @BPRescue 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Sheesh, I have more...
      Off the drone is where the Karma stands out. You now have the ability to extend your video composition by not just obtaining the 10 minute mundane aerial videos nobody wants to see. For $1100, just $100 more than the Mavic, you have a removable camera that as stated is still one of the best for action be it on land or under water. Let's not forget the gimbal, which is the single most critical element in allowing even the most entry level novice, the ability to get dare I say cinematic type shots. The image stabilization of the camera helps, but the gimbal is an amazing feature that cannot be overstated.
      So, if you look at flexibility and value, there is currently no match for the Karma. The Hero5 matches market value of $400 for a comparable device, where the gimbal is an amazing accessory for a mere $300. Now, consider the cost for the entire package being $1100. That puts the actual drone cost at $400 with a backpack to protect it. For a Mavic to compete with that, we are talking about an additional $800 which includes the additional Micro SD one must put into the 2nd camera. So, for an Apples to Apples comparison, we are talking about $1100 for a Karma, vs. $1800 for a Mavic. For that price, I fully expect the Mavic to be more of a technological marvel. In that regard, I prefer put that $800 in something quantifiable such as saving up for my next L lens for my 7D, or even vacation.
      So, the value in the Karma is its ability to do anything which allows for a full video experience for a modest cost. The Karma if you will is yet another mounting option in the never ending bag of any GoPro user. Existing GoPro owners get even more flexibility because they already have a myriad of mounts to attach. New buffs to the game won't need to learn two platforms being the DJI camera and an off drone camera. It's one platform, to which BTW where image quality is not compromised; yet another win. And while hovering accuracy is minimally decreased for the Karma vs. the Mavic, for most composition this just won't translate to a decrease in the quality of video provided. In that regard, I don't need sensors to compose, or help create a shot. This is done either through pilot control, or using the auto paths included with 4 of the most often used professionally in orbit, cable cam, reveal and dronie. The Mavic does have more pre programmed modes, and the follow me feature is incredible, but are these other options truly needed, or just check off boxes for those spec junkies? Ok, I concede, eject the follow me, then ask the same question of yourself.
      To speak more to stability and even safety. There are no sensors on the Karma, so there is no true autonomous flight. The Karma as I indicated does have incredible auto paths that will allow even the least experienced pilots to obtain excellent video. It also has plenty of safety features that will help new pilots and old. The remote is simple, does not require an additional cell phone and always keeps you updated with information to know where you are at. Part of this is both visual and audible alerts for a low battery. If you ignore such alerts, the Karma will automatically return to you, or return to launch based on the situation. In doing so, it will rise to a preset altitude of now 100'(because boneheads were hitting buildings while set at the 66' default) or more if you manually set it, then will return to location where it will land itself. During this time, you have the ability to route around obstacles if you need to. Another safety feature is if the controller loses connection with the drone, the drone will hover for a short time while trying to reestablish connectivity. If it cannot, it will return to you, or launch based on the situation. Additionally if at anytime during flight you lose sight of your drone, you can tell it to return to you, or return to launch. Now, per the FAA you can never lose site, but at 2000' away, it is a dot, so look down at your controller to review information or look at your composition, then back up and you might lose the Karma...
      Speaking more to obstacle avoidance, there is no doubt certain karma crashes I have seen online that potentially could have been avoided if you were flying the newer generation of DJI products. Be it a mountain the pilot flew behind, the building other pilots flew it behind, or many others, the sensors might not have allowed the crash. At the same time, there were multiple pilot errors in all of these from losing line of sight to the drone, not ensuring return altitude was set properly, to just their utter lack of experience, even regard for common sense. Let's not forget the FAA restrictions that were violated here for here in line of sight, flying over people, etc. In some instances you have some of these pilots acknowledging their mistake, but still claiming it was a design flaw which is unreasonable. Again, the newer DJI products have sensors that can assist, though it should never replace common sense, or safe flight practice. In that regard, it's one of those things you should never truly use, but nice to have. It should be noted however, that a simple search shows that while helpful, these sensors do not provide miracles and have still been flown into light poles, trees, power lines, etc. and also based on direction of travel. There are still limitations.
      Technology is great, but it doesn't supersede common sense, or mean a platform is more usable. I don't need the radio volume to automatically increase as I drive faster, and I pay attention while driving, so automatic braking is not something I need. So, sensors for me on a drone that while a technology marvel, is not necessary for flight or obtaining excellent video. I won't perform that lame little wave those in the BMW (motorcycle) element seem to acknowledge each other for supremacy, but I will go everywhere they will, and while they are praising each other and basking in the comradery of their local forum/pub, I will be off road, or heading to the lake with my boat for that additional experience. So, you tell me who wins here.
      Lets also not paint the Mavic or other DJI's as the complete, even perfect solution. There are weaknesses to the Mavic beyond the video quality issues that are well documented. The sensors do not pick up all obstacles, with many crashes noted in structures they "should have avoided". There have been fly aways, GPS issues, you know, all those issues you are going to have with any device that is not in the safety of its carrying case. I recognize GoPro had a recall for an issue where it noted a small percentage of Karma's "falling from the sky" that were exposed to certain environmental conditions causing the battery to lose contact with the leads. They recalled ALL of them, and even gave a new Hero5 for their efforts and anguish. I think a pretty solid move. Yet today, even after re-release of a new Karma with a new battery locking mechanism, you still have some who are unhappy their drone was snatched away, and even more of the loyal and biased DJI owners that see an opportunity to bash the product, while refusing to note their product has also been known to fall from the sky, fly away on its own, lose connection, or just like the Karma, crash because of pilot error.
      Many still try and compare these drones and the reality is the Mavic IS a better drone for flying. I don't think that can be argued intelligibly. At the same time, I did not buy this drone for flying, I bought it for taking video to which it the Karma will be neck and neck, even better than the Mavic in almost every composition possible, even adding more. Make no mistake, the Karma at $400 actual value will fly circles around any drone at even twice that cost and is pretty impressive actually. The Mavic at 2.5 times the cost is now up for debate. But, unless I want to run around like my 10 year old son, holding the Mavic in my arms and making zoom noises with my mouth, the only video it is taking is of the aerial type of composition. For me and many others, this is precisely the reason the Karma is the better drone "FOR US". We don't need to show others it's rock steady position holding capability, nor do we want it to bail us out of a spot we mistaking got ourselves in, we just want another option in adding aerial video to our repertoire. Scratch that; adding arguably some of the best quality aerial video possible... Not flying, but a qualitative and measurable result in product...
      Anyway, as I said earlier, you performed a good review which is much better than many who seem to impart agenda. The Karma doesn't suit you perfectly, which like anything in life is neither bad or wrong; just different.

      This is probably the most intelligent (not to mention one of the longest) comments, I have read on TH-cam.After a lot of thought I got the GoPro Karma, for all of the reasons you stated above. So far I am very happy with video footage I am getting (Hero 6). I really like the compact size of the Mavic but the camera is just not good enough. It's a real shame that GoPro have decided to give up on drones. Hopefully by the time I need to replace mine. A compact, folding drone with a 1" inch type sensor will be available.

    Good and honest review. Gopro entered a market that I am not sure is good for them. I understand why in that their cameras where (past tense here) being used on so many drones at the time so they thought they would get in on it. But they were not looking far enough ahead to see what this drone needed to do to truly compete with the other high end drones out there. The look of the stabilizer sticking out so far ahead of the drone always bothered me anyhow. It just looks odd and added on after the fact.

    That was a great review. Thank you. I am in the market for a higher quality drone. Already own a GoPro, love the video quality, so my first instinct was to look at drones that use a GoPro. That idea dies quickly. Most GoPro drones will use Wifi for FPV and that's a harsh distance limit. Some will offer a range extender, e.g. the Xiro Explorer, but still a limitation. Currently the Mavic Pro is the way to go. Range, flight time, 3 axis gimbal, and form factor. Features, such as pre-programmed flight modes, obstacle avoidance, as well as immersed flying at this price are pretty incredible.

      +Jose Gutierrez I covered the 4 modes it has but they aren't smart modes, you manually set point A and Point B and it goes between them. Others have what are called smart modes where it uses sensors, apps on your phone, or other methods to fly (such as a dynamic follow me).

    I got the Karma because of the total package. If GoPro was smart, they would make the next few versions compatible with the current controller and gimble. That will allow people to upgrade more often with a drone only which should provide a lot of improvements in the next version (obstacle avoidance, follow me, down sensors etc)

  • @michaelfabrizio6225

    I enjoy my drone - Yes - it would have been nice to record video from the controller (using a dongle) to another recording device. I also found that the unit will sometimes land "hard", (it actually broke a propeller) so I fit two swimming pool plastic "noodles" and use them as shock absorbers, so it lands softer. I cut to it length and then slice it length-wise. Then slid them into each landing strut. This also allows the drone to be able to land and float in the water....and take off again. The noodles keep it afloat very nicely.

    15:14 GPS precision is only say +/- 5 meters or so, DJI is more stable due to other sensors. Though they should be able to have the computer sense which way it's drifting just by having the onboard computer watch the camera input, if accellerometers aren't enough.

    Hi, thanks for the video. I am also upgrading from a Phantom 2. I most probably will buy the Karma. I like the entire concept and see it as a platform for the Gopro. • @WolfHunter1043
      @WolfHunter1043  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Juergen Schroeder thank you. Pure speculation but a follow me mode is something that could be added with a firmware update at some point or so I'd hope. It is a great diverse package the DJI Mavic just won me over.

    • @juergen05
      @juergen05 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      WolfHunter1043 I don't know what is involved to do the follow me mode. The Karma has some features like the cable cam mode. So far I see only modes, where the point to track is static and could be a GPS point. Follow me is dynamic and requires to interprete an object on a pic. Maybe not so easy. It would me intersting if someone wit a Karma would use the dronie-mode, tapping the screen and then move by 50 meter. Will Karma still track the person or will it remain in the path which was logged in first?
      If it is tracking the person, I would think the follow me mode should be an easy software update. But I am speculating here completly out of the blue.
      I am also torn betwee Mavic and Karma. I also consider that Karma being a camera platform will also be compatible with future GoPros. Which makes upgrading the image quality cheaper.
      But I can completly understand your move to Mavic, it is for sure the superior drone.
      Jürgen

    • @WolfHunter1043
      @WolfHunter1043  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      One way I see it being possible if to use the passenger apps ability to communicate with the drone. Connect a phone via the passenger app and the drone is able to "follow" the GPS location of the device running the passenger app such as a cell phone. To my knowledge, when the DJI Mavic uses active track its using the optical sensors on the front to create a 3 dimensional image and follow the object selected. This is something the Karma would not be capable of unlike the GPS idea.

    Seemed like a fairly impartial view. However, you gloss over the versatility value of being able to remove the camera and gimbal, which also translates into $ value. Drones move a lot when first launched. unless they have 10 sat links. I have a few and if you shoot up 30 to 60 feet and back down even my old Phantom 2 will stay within a foot at 20ft. But as drone go its a great expendable option to shoot High-risk flying. Also when near the ground make sure people shut off their phones WiFI. as it will cause drones to try to land themselves. I am waiting for the Phantom 5 pro to come out. but might get this karma with a go pro 7.

      +Victor Goossens the question unfortunately is very subjective. I personally love the Mavic. I think its very well rounded and great at what it does. Very small and portable and is about $1000 USD. The Karma is acceptable for portability but not as capable as the Mavic IMO. The Karma comes with a GoPro and handheld gimbal so makes it a little more well rounded but runs $1100 with it all. If you want video quality and a simi-professional drone you are looking at the Phantom 4 Pro and if you want professional like quality the Inspire is a start but goes way up from there. There are many in between and cheaper but again, really depends on you.

    Well, for the first time flyer... I don't think Karma is a good drone. Considering the Karma Drift being more unstable than that of Phantom 2. I flew P2 a couple of time and nearly crash them because of the confusion caused by the drift. Considering you are already a veteran drone flyer, yet you return the drone for the drift!
    Anyway, in case you didn't buy Karma grip yet. Try Sony X3000... And congrats on your choice to opt for Mavic. Hope to see more professional footage from you soon ^^,

    • @WolfHunter1043
      @WolfHunter1043  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I do plan to review the Mavic despite there being many other reviews of it just to give my take. I am not returning the Karma for the drift alone, I would actually say thats only about 25% of the reason I am returning it. I really wanted something that I was able to take with me, something portable as I will soon be traveling to business a lot and the Mavic also suits that a little better. I also like the Mavic is able to follow me around using active track so I can be in my own footage. Sure the obstacle sensors are great but when I am in control I rarely fly directly straight so not a deal breaker but the ground optical flow sensors are nice to have because it stays in place more. Tripod mode also allows a nice and creative take on time lapse video, think of flying around a light house at 2MPH for 10 minutes then speeding it up to make it about 20 seconds. Looks awesome in the end. I will also likely make a video quality comparison between the Hero 5 and the Mavic's camera.

      VTC Drone I also found it funny that most Karma reviewers' first reaction is 'I like the case'...that's not just a case, it's a bulky backpack(or black coffin according to iphonedo). GoPro should pay people to carry that!

    • @VTCDrone
      @VTCDrone 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Bushangel, you must understand 3 things:
      1. Most people are familiar with Phantom, and despite it being 2/3 weight of the Karma, all its carrying bags look bulky.
      2. DJI screwed up its Mavic delivery. If there were more ready and these reviewers had familiarized themselves both Mavic size and capability, they will be less incline to praise the Karma coffin (because Mavic don't need one).
      3. GoPro was American icon (past tense). And reviewers (esp. those in the US) are naturally bias because of that. If it were to be just another Chinese firm, they will not even look at it. It was outdated by 2 years, bulky compared to its competitor, unstable, low battery life, short range, poor flight performance, low intelligence, etc. And the removable gimbal is not even their idea.... It was first used by DJI in the Inspire series 2 years ago!

    • @VTCDrone

      I really wonder. They must have spent hundreds of million of dollar on this drone. Why not just buy rising drone company? Many of those in China are cheaper and smarter than Karma.

  • @vnrene

    As reported by a large amount of users, the drone gives you a GPS error, what should give you the only option to land it safely. But this is not true!!! The drone simply accelerates in a straight line until disappears or hit something. In my case, even running in its direction I lost sight because it is very fast and last location gives no real clue where it did go. I piloted a lot of drones before to do some work and choose the GOPRO for being my own drone because of the camera (that could be used underwater and etc giving a good value for money) even knowing that other brands are better with drones. I made a very rational choice and spent a 2 year saving to have a drone that flew just 2 times (2nd being the one where it disappeared). I`m completely frustrated because I neither stepped more than 50 meters from it (diagonally to it) before receiving the error and loosing complete control. Only button I hit for all the time when running to it was the descend one, trying to land it (or at least crashing it in some tree before I loose it). As I received it by yesterday and fully charged its battery + updated all software I can tell it is not a system update missing nor calibration fault as I did it very smoothly before the 1st launch. Will open a case with support on monday and hope gopro takes the customers seriously because it is stupid discover in internet forums that it is a common behavior... I`d rather prefer to have the 2016 version, at least it drops from the sky and not gets lost from you.

    no sensors, no obstacle avoidance, no advance engineering built in besides a plain drone. Mavi Pro blows this thing about of the water, however I do like the GoPro Hero 5 and the Karma grip...

      +Charles Washington it has the 4 built in smart modes, but you just set point a by flying to it, point B by flying to it, then it will fly between them or orbit around them. Will not follow in any way

      @@mrmrjims3865 well I guess you have some insider information, as GoPro CEO himself said "Karma would be the last drone system they produce, as it is a market that is untenable for GoPro to be in." Which is correct GoPro is a camera company not a drone company, what they need to do is collaborate with DJI and build a drone with them using a GoPro camera.

    I bought the Mavic Pro And had to take it back to BestBuy it wouldn't connect, then it wouldn't shut off, then if you phone times out and you had to re swipe your screen it was a hassle. After spending a grand I wasn't impressed. I took it back where BestBuy charged me a $150 restock fee. Two days later I went back to BestBuy and bought the Karma charged everything up went out to test it out only to find that the Hero 6 GoPro camera didn't work. Tried the batteries out of my Hero 5...nothing. Took it back to BestBuy. I'm pissed! Needless to say I won't be buying ANY drones for awhile, especially considering they're $799 to $1200 bucks.

    • @WolfHunter1043
      @WolfHunter1043  6 ปีที่แล้ว

    • @sasquatch-rx3ss
      @sasquatch-rx3ss 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      WolfHunter1043 Yeah I wasn't too thrilled about a restocking fee. I was like how are you going to restock something that's defective? That's why I called DJI trying to get reimbursed.it was useless however.

    Hey thanks for the review Im looking for a foldable drone for travelling (carrying a big P3 around with suitcases was crap) and torn between the Mavic + Karma. The Mavic is a clear winner. It is a much better drone. its not even a question... But... Am I the only one who thinks the Mavic has NOTICEABLY shit camera quality? Even after color grading and post work, it just doesn't look at all anywhere near the Hero 6? Not even close? And other side by side comparison videos look paid? Your footage here is excellent even with Hero 5.

    I'm torn. I want to love the karma. I like the idea of being able to film a complete set of shots with one device (drone, gimbal, and GoPro all integrated). Meaning I can get some sweet aerial shots, then attach the GoPro to the gimbal; all for the same price as the Mavic. The Dji however is for more advanced and is more portable. That being said I'll have to spend 2500 for the GoPro, gimbal, and Mavic if I went that route. Help!
