    Finally!!! I've heard and been advised to simplify and merge shapes but no one explains exactly what that means. Soooooo helpful. And yes please do more. It takes some repetition for it to sink in. Especially if you could do different types of scenes. Maybe starting from a very simple setting. Thank so much Liron!!

      Another source for tips on such 'value studies' is 'CafeWatercolour' on youtube.

    This was such a helpful reminder to back away and strip it down to basic shapes. I keep finding myself caught up in the details, losing the intended feeling of the scene, and this technique sets it up for success almost every time... I'd love to see the other ones if you wouldn't mind breaking down those down as well...
    🤟I appreciate you homie. Long-distance highfive ✋😁

    Incredibly useful! Please do the other two paintings. Do you always start with mid value? And what kind of white paint are you using?

    That was excellent for connecting shapes!! I squinted to see the similar tones. You understand our problem with simplification very well Liron.
    That example was very good but it had relatively few colours. . It gets complex when we see the similar tones for the shapes but they’re different colours. That’s where it gets trickier.

    Great way to ascertain a true value picture of what you want to paint before you try to paint the same scene in color. Probably better than just squinting one’s eyes to figure out your lights and darks.

    It is interesting how you can start a watercolor not only with the lightest values, but also with the midtones or even some of the darkest values. I guess the advantage of starting darker is that it does give you a reference point for the rest of the values. Any approach could work as long as you know how to do it well :)

    One more question. If a scene does not have snow but has some white and very light tones do you leave it untouched?

    • @LironYan
      @LironYan  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you Julie! 😁🙏🏼🙏🏼
      If I think the contrast is strong enough between the darks and those light tones you mention - I very well may leave them white!
      But if I want to consolidate the focal point in a smaller area using a light value (such as a strong highlight on top of a white car), then I may rearrange everything so that this is the only white part, while the ground gets a light value (:
      In other words - I'm shifting the highlights to get the impression / story / focal point I want!

    Nice job, well done! Love b/w paintings, sometimes they are better than the colored ones. Some watercolor artists prefer to do a value study making these b/w versions before the colored painting, do you think it helps so much?
    Anyway, of course I want to see the other paintings ;) !

    Thank you for this, Liron. I was wondering...is it ok to connect the mid-values and the darks in one wash to unite them and then add a glaze just to the dark areas - is it better to do them in three separate steps?
