John Taylor is one of the best bassists ever. New Religion has a great bass line, too. It was filmed in Sri Lanka, and DD was known for their beautiful videos when videos were a new thing. Not a lot of artists wanted to spend money on videos, but DD jumped on the bandwagon and reaped the rewards on MTv.

Ok, so after watching your reaction, I want to first say, if you randomly picked Save a Prayer, you are either a genius or very lucky! 😁 This is one of DD's biggest hits. Having said that, this band is 40+ years and 15 albums into their catalog. They were still recording and touring pre-covid. Back in the 80s, they were called the second coming of the Beatles in terms of their popularity. They ruled rhe world for a time and although they gained a lot of popularity being thought of as an attractive boy band that girls went nuts for, they are in no way simply a boy band musically. Just by this one song alone, I'd say you already figured that out. Genre wise, they started out as something called New Romantic which began in England in the late 70s and early 80s. Some of their earlier stuff would fall under new wave, but by the time of their 3rd studio album, Rio, which this song came off of, I'd call their genre...Duran Duran. You always know it's them when you hear them. They are distinctive, but they float between lots of different sounds. They can sound disco/rock/new wave/hip hop. You just have to explore. Rio is a classic album and spawned many hits making then huge stars. It's still in my top 5 albums of all time. That bass you heard? You haven't really heard anything yet. John Taylor is the bassist and he is very respected in the industry as not only a fabulous bassist, but a key element of the DD sound. Btw, many of their Rio videos were shot in exotic locations or very expensive. They always went all out for their videos and were the darlings of MTV in the 80s. This one was shot in Sri Lanka. I have a ton of DD to recommend where to start is a challenge. However, you cannot go wrong with the official video for Rio.

The genius of Simon's lyrics is as he once said, they are "slightly divorced from reality". You can sit 20 people down in a room and play any one song on their first few albumns and get 20 different answers as to what each person thought the lyrics meant. They can represent different things to different people. Still love those boys. Met them a couple times decades ago, and they are an absolute blast to be around too. Very funny. :)

Oh My Dude- prepare yourself!! Duran Duran was probably one of the most influential bands of the 80’s and are still going strong now. I absolutely adore them. I’ve seen them more than any other band performing live and they NEVER disappoint!! You could pull anything from their catalog and you will love it. They really did bring us into an era of “New Romanticism”. Check out “Hungry Like The Wolf” or “Is Their Something I Should Know”. “Girls On Film” was # 1 on video juke boxes ( yes- they were a thing ) for like literally ever! Great reaction!! Keep the videos coming! P.S.- the boys in this band were all BEAUTIFUL!! Pretty sure most of the videos for “Rio” were shot in Sri Lanka!

Great choice! Duran Duran ruled MTV when the cable channel first launched in the early 1980s (and primarily played music videos back then! :-) ) because their videos looked expensive and several featured exotic locales (this one and also 1982's "Rio" and "Hungry Like the Wolf"). Plus it didn't hurt that the lads were pretty dang good looking. (My fave is John Taylor. :-) ) I also recommend 1983's "Is There Something I Should Know?" and 1993's "Come Undone" and "Ordinary World." Duran Duran initially was lumped in with the other New Romantics from the U.K., like Spandau Ballet ("True"), ABC ("The Look of Love") and Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark ("If You Leave").

Huge Duran Duran fan too!!! It’s their 40th anniversary this year. Definitely recommend starting with earlier iconic videos. They literally helped launch MTV with their iconic videos. Their videos were shot all over the world, full of style, sophistication and sexiness. You hit the nail on the head with this review. Amazing music and true artists who cared deeply and explored and dominated the early video genre. Rio and Hungry Like the Wolf would be classics. ❤️

  •  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

duran duran is - new wave (synth post-punk) / pop rock / synth pop / pop - a style typical from the 80's and 90's when the guitars where loosing space to synthetizers , and the eletronic drum sounds where begining to dominate sometimes totally replacing a human drummer.

John Taylor is one of the best bassists out there. He had a great Instagram Stories over the summer where he broke down some of their biggest hits and played and discussed how he came up with his lines. This video and Hungry Like the Wolf were shot in Sri Lanka. They shot many videos in really exotic locations, pretty representative of the over the top 80's.

Duran Duran, the greatest thing to hit America during the second English Invasion. Fondly known in the UK as the Fab Five. They considered themselves a guitar/synth band. And you need to check out the side projects. Andy and John went and played for Power Station, while Simon and Nick formed Arcadia. Roger jumped between them and played for both. And they have a new album coming out in 2021.

As you dig deeper into their musical catalog, you’ll learn to appreciate their musicianship even more! They were the epitome of 80’s music and are still producing great songs. @@PancakeMarshmallowDude lol your funny!! Yes. That’s great thanks! I’m not sure if you ever watched the old show called MADtv. One of my favorite characters was played by Debra Wilson. It was Miss Bunifa Latifah Halllifa Jackson . She was one of the best. Her skits were sooo funny! Try to check those out if you never have That’s where I got that from. Shed be arguing with somebody and say why is it because I’m black. She’s hilarious!!

Don’t waste too much time on the meaning of Duran Duran’s lyrics - there is no there there.

That depends on the song. Early DD, very hard if not impossible poetic language to decipher. Later the lyrics became more personal and profound. A great example is Ordinary World and Do You Believe in Shame.
