Hear me out. On the first watch of the entire live action version, I felt the show didnt honor the Cartoon series. But on my second watch I appreciated it much more. Its okay to dislike certain moments because they are a part of another storyline, but overall they are trying to adapt it the best they can and they did a phenomenal job. I am not afriad to say that some moments were much better than the cartoon.

I don't mind changes, but like do it right- don't just change things for the sake of changing. Tbh the main problem of this show is not the changes from the original, it's just very mediocre writing.

@@thedevastator8425 well the weight of being the Avatar is a hard thing to convey. It comes only with maturity. So giving adult like emotions to 12 to 15 yr old kids would've been a disaster. It worked for the cartoon because there were equally elevating moments of fun along with the giant depression of losing everything that Aang knew and loved, before he went into the ice. However I do agree that some of the writing could've been better. It is going to work much better if they divide season 2 into 2 parts so that there is more room for a solid story and they can work on the pacing.

The division over this episode is wild. I see some saying it's the worst, and some saying it's one of the best. Personally it was my favorite so far when I reached it and my 2nd favorite overall.
This was the point in the show at which I really started to accept that this is an ADAPTATION rather than a copy or remake. I started being like "HOLY S**T! This is getting CRAZY!" in a "What's gonna happen next?" kind of way. I was on the edge of my seat at the end wondering how in the world it was all gonna play out. Worried zuko and/or June might find Katara and Sokka's bodies. I finally got EXCITED by the changes and excited to be surprised, rather than to just know exactly how it's going to play out.
I loved getting Wan Shi Tong early, as long as it doesn't mean we don't get him again later. I loved the mysterious spirit fox too and her dialoge. Only thing I'm bummed we missed out on is seeing Hei Bai turn back into a Panda spirit.
I also LOVED Koh! I wasn't paying attention to the CG with him at all unlike other times in the show.
Loved the easter eggs too, and of course June! 😍 fantastic episode in my opinion.

My problem with ep 5 and 6 is that the Heibai problem got neglected because Katara and Sokka were abducted by Koh. Yeah, Aaang saves them, but none is talking about how HeiBai will still be on a rampage and how the land of the villagers will keep dying...

I think so too, not only is it an important part of season 2 but i think it’s safe to say it’s a fan favorite as well. I’m sure they’ll find some way to at least weave in something so beloved by fans. It’d be a brilliant way to bring in Sozin’s comet too, good thinking there. My thought with bringing in the owl so early is that it’s to introduce him ahead of time so there’s already some connection when he shows up later, he’s already established here as a spirit who provides information and will be somewhat of a familiar face when we see him again. Maybe even prepping for him to have a bigger role in some way? Plus, since he is pretty iconic, it’s probably something of an Easter egg for those who watched the original, a bit of a teaser to get us hyped up to want to see him in season 2, and maybe including him just in case they don’t get a season 2 - might be why they included the secret tunnel too, adapt some of the iconic bits from season 2 that they could reasonably enough slip in just in case they never get the chance to fully adapt everything.

Overall I like the series but this episode is really mixed for me. I appreciate the references, and there are good moments and details. But a lot of stuff would have done better in future seasons. And Sokka's flashback feels convoluted. They could have explored him being left behind, no need to add a conflict that really isn't in character for him or Hakoda.
Also part of what I loved abo6the original winter solstice episode was that aang had no idea what was going on and neither did we. And some stuff stayed unclear. Like them turning blue. But here it is like they need to give a logical explanation to everything.

    • @uncleirohsteashop

This episode is certainly a mixed bag, I think for those who havent seen the original will love this and those of us who are die-hard original fans will see all the bad elements.
    Good things... (in my opinion)
First Azula scene with Ozai... Loved it, it's purely character building showing the corruption behind what she eventually becomes because of Ozai.
Katara's re-living of her worst memory. With her mother being burned alive infront of her. This scene is brutal and powerful and so happy they played it out.
June. Perfect. Nuff said, the actress nailed it and Nyla looked amazing.
Scene with Aang and Gyatso was fantastic, Gyatso actor was one of the best in the series.
The horror style filming with Koh making them re-live their nightmares was I loved.
The teasing of blue flames with Azula, again I think it's great she doesnt just have them, it seems like more she is provovoked by Ozai to train and be better she will eventually get this blue flame (second half of season 2 I'd imagine).
    Bad things...(in my opinion)
They played into the Hei-Bai story of stealing villagers, yet it's Koh who has them all...
Somehow Katara and Sokka end up going into the spirit world and their explaination is basically... IDK I'm the avatar. It's just such lazy writing, Hei-Bai could literally steal them like he has others and thats a much better explanation.
They dont even end the Hei-Bai storyline really at all, Aang plants an acorn infront of the statue but there is no moment of acceptance from the spirit.
Sokka's worst nightmare is him 'passing' his boat training to find out he shouldn't of and his dad called him bad leader/warrior to Bato... CMON?!?! It's hardly traumatic when compared to Kataras... I feel like this scene could of been used as a flashback elsewhere. Not for his deepest darkest fear/memory.
The training scene with Azula, Ty-Lee and Mai... Ty-Lee and Mai wouldnt stand up to Azula at this point, it's part of their arcs. Mai's voice and delivery is not what I'd want at all, the no-feelings mono-tone voice is Mai all over and the actor doesnt have it.
Shi-Tong... Why? Just why? His CGI and voice I agree is amazing but why is he here at all? Just gives me cheshire cat vibes.

Nice comparison with the swamp, I knew this reminded me of something from season 2 but hadn’t made the connection! My favorite parts in this show are still the scenes with Iroh and Zuko. Zuko’s character is a bit different here, he was never very hesitant to operate in a gray area in the cartoon but here he’s very stuck on the way things should be done and what’s fitting of the fire nation, to the point where he’s evidently very uncomfortable with trying to bribe the bartender for info (which I thought was a pretty cute moment, how he so awkwardly pushed the money bag onto the counter) and needs a lot of convincing from uncle Iroh to even consider hiring June. It’s a change that does fit in well with his character though, having such a focus on honor and a high regard for his nation. If we get another season we’ll likely see him become increasingly disillusioned with the way the fire nation does things, coming to realize when he finally returns home that his father really does agree with all these dishonorable tactics and has been the mastermind behind far more underhanded dealings, and that’ll be a major catalyst behind him defecting to team Avatar.

This episode was something. I wish habai got to do the habai thing instead of just being a monster. And how koh was the one stealing people instead of being in the final. The whole stealing faces and how creepy that was in the og was such a wild thing that really made him.
If they take wong shi tong out of the second that would be criminal. If theres a season 2 i really hope they figure out how to put the soul back into it. The gaang is more gaang like in their interviews than on screen. If they can give that energy at least it would be lovely.

  • @Zan_JM
    @Zan_JM 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

This episode, to me, suffered from too many plotlines going on at once as do several of these middle episodes. I already mentioned all the things crammed into the previous episode, but once again we have things put here seemingly just because. And part of me wonders if they were truly worried they wouldn’t get a season 2, so they took things from it and stuck them in this first season just in case.
With Wan Shi Tong, I agree that he basically has no business being here. You could switch him out with any other spirit to give Aang information. It didn’t have to be Wan Shi Tong. And yes, The Swamp is also used here, so they can’t use it again if they get season 2.
I know a lot of fans were hyped from the trailer to see Hei Bai, but then after 2 minutes he wasn’t even an obstacle anymore. And because we don’t see him accept what the acorn means and change back into gentle panda form, that whole storyline loses impact. It became confusing because it seems like they’re saying Hei Bai took the villagers, but Koh trapped them there? So it’s almost like a double team, but Koh is clearly what they wanted to focus on since he wasn’t utilized to help find Tui and La.
And then there’s the clunky reason Katara and Sokka ended up in the spirit world with Aang. From a writerly perspective, it seems like they used that solely as a way for Katara and Sokka to have anything to do in the episode. If they can’t come with Aang, then they’re just sitting in the forest with Appa and Momo doing nothing. So they go to the spirit world because the plot needs them to. Their traumatic memories do make more sense here, but they could’ve executed it so much better. They could’ve taken more from the source material and had Hei Bai take both Katara and Sokka, which is how they end up in the spirit world reliving their worst memories. It was baffling sometimes what they decided to keep from the original show versus change. Why can’t Hei Bai have a more active role in this episode? Why can’t he abduct both siblings?
I know it’s best to divorce the animated show from this one and view it as its own thing, but it falls apart when I can’t figure out the creative explanation behind these decisions.

This episode threw me off so much. I don’t have a problem with them mixing up different storylines IF they make sense like they did for episode 3 (i really liked that episode for the most part) but I also agree the decisions they took for this one made no sense starting with wan shi tong 😬 them bringing up storylines and characters from season 2 make me think that they are not gonna be adapting those episodes if we do get another season. I did like that we got to see Sokka’s and Katara’s past and I agree that June’s introduction and portrayal was great 👏🏽

This episode got me questioning and kinda dumbfounded why they went into this confusion route. Yeah having Sokka and Katara goes into the spirit world made absolutely no freaking sense. They are literally using book 2 references which I still don’t know how I feel about this. Having them seeing their traumas could have written somewhere else. This was definitely referencing from the swamp episode. This execution was weak. Now I would be lying if I say I didn’t get upset seeing Wan Shi Tong before my girl Toph is just not okay. I seriously hated this change. Aang was literally making expressions to Koh…sigh it’s fine it’s fine. Can’t wait for you to review ep 6!

Thanks for a quality reaction video as always. I must confess...this is where this adaptation almost lost me. I wasn't thrilled with the mish-mash that was the Omashu episode...but this was worse. One wonders if the show runners were so concerned about there "being" a season 2 that they thought let's just grab as much as we can from season 2/3 and slam them into season 1. Agreed...the GCI of the nonhuman characters (other than Koh...which was ok) is spot on. But the majority of these are changes that are just not warranted, and steal dramatic impact that would (have?) come later. I certainly don't mind the extended look into the relationship of the characters (although some is bit clunky). But grabbing stuff from far future episodes smacks of gratuitous fan service. I'm a HUGE fan of the original animated series (one of the top 5 TV experiences ever)...so...tweak it around a bit...but don't take an almost perfect story board and ignore it (I wanted to say something more graphic...but will go with ignore).

Having the owl from the library was kinda neat but like you said made no sense why he was there… the Gyatso and aang scenes are really great and that guy playing Gyatso is passionate about that role. Seeing what happened to kataras mom was really sad… Jun is beautiful, and is again ripped right out of the cartoon! I Liked how she interacted with Iroh lol my rating ? 3 face steals out of 5.

  • @Kaitonel
    @Kaitonel 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

Sokka and Katara going in was fine with me. Maybe it does conflict with lore but it's spiritual stuff, things can be explained as "magic" as Sokka says during the swamp episode "that's avatar stuff" it's not a huge stretch that it could happen. Just like with jet and the mechanist, the melding of different episodes in to 1 works.
It allowed Aang to separate from Katara and Sokka ready for what's to come in the next episode.
Like with the previous episode I think the inclusion of Wan Shi Tong was likely again a bit of fan service and if we don't get season 2, well at least he appeared!
This episode more than others I don't understand why they changed it as much as they did. As a fan of the animation I don't like it, it's a change I don't agree with but as it's own entity, I see nothing wrong with it. I can still see ways to bring it back online with season 2 story.
Koh in this episode I think worked, it stops the finale being bloated with his inclusion. Jumping ahead, not having Koh in the finale didn't hurt that episode. So I'm okay with that.
The show needs to be viewed from within the box and from outside the box. Compare it to the animation and the source but also view it as its own thing. Not every change will completely destroy what is to come, certain things can be explained away, different to the animation but also still make sense.
The animation was not as perfect as people like to think, it has its issues that get overlooked. But it was perfect enough and it came first, it was the original. Live action doesn't fill the boots but it respects the boots and changes or not (minus animation goofyness) it is still very much Avatar inside and out.
I do wonder and we will never know, how many people would have different views if we had not got the original first. There are many things I would have done different if I was in control of this adaption, but I did enjoy what they gave us.

If it's something that the live-action is telling you is that anything can happen. One of the many things I loved about the live-action was unpredictability. It had me wondering what's next. If Hei Bai can travel between the Spirit World and the Natural World why not Wan Shi Tong. Also, nothing is random for Wan Shi Tong. He is the spirit of knowledge, he knows all. It's different from the animated but it's consistent and makes sense with this story. We can still get the library in the future somehow. The live-action isn't confusing. It's the people that are confusing themselves with the animated series by depending on it for answers.

I honestly hated this episode. Outside of the Gyatso interaction (which also makes little sense) it was a watered down hosh posh of the spirit world stuff and none of it really worked. The spirit world itself also just looked like the regular world with a filter over it.

Episode five is my least favorite episode out of all of them. They got the Spiritworld completely wrong. Katara and Sokka shouldn't be there at all, Aang is saving the village from Heibai, no he needs to save his friends from Koh, no he needs to meet Roku in the Fire nation,
no biggie, lemme just fly to the fire nation and back all by myself without any problems, go back to the spiritworld and save my friends. I also really would have enjoyed seeing the trasformation from monster back to Panda.
Too much going on in too little time...
Also a little dissappointed we're probably won't see the Library of Won Shi Tang in season 2.

While I liked that they made the spirit world more populated and included the fog of lost souls as a reference to korra and I liked that the spirit of knowledge was a sort of spirit guide to their visit, there is a lot that went wrong too. Gyatsos Inclusion for example, while the actor brought his A game, was unnecessary and kinda removed all the emotional tension Aang had from Gyatsos Death and the Air Nomad Genocide too quickly and unsatysfyingly. While Koh was scary and centering the episode around him was a really nice decision, it also lead to them just having Hei Bai there as a cameo, when the episode should center around him. Least they could have done is have him transform back into a Panda in Episode 6 to resolve the conflict, but they completely dropped him. Episode 6 is much better and probably one of the best in general but does suffer from the setup of Episode 5. Overall a 6.5/10.

The thing I disliked the most was their short portrayal of Hakoda. I'm honestly not sure why they're going the direction they are with him. When talking to the Mechanist, Sokka also mentions his Dad not really being into the same stuff as he is...which is also contradictory to the show as we see that Hakoda invented the stink bombs. And now here, he's just...kind of a dick about the whole thing. I'm honestly not sure why they decided to completely change how we see him in the original cartoon, but it's a bad change imo.

It becomes much more interesting and less infuriating when you think of the live action as a different universe rather than a copy or remake of the animation.
So anything done in the live action does not relate or change the animated series timeline
A multiverse of Avatar split by medium.🤔 The MCU did it with Spiderman and people loved it…why not Avatar?

The more I rewatch and the more views I see and hear of others' views, the more I feel like the show is being unfairly hated on despite some of the hate having roots in legitimate criticism. It feels like some people saw the trailers, saw the cast interviews, didn't like something, and decided that they have to hate the show on principle rather than give it a fair chance.
The spirit world stuff didn't make much sense, and whilst I didn't mind the Aang and Gyatso changes, I do take issue with aspects of The Swamp being incorporated into the episode when that episode deserved being fully adapted in season 2 rather than aspects shoehorned into this season. I loved the look of the spirits - the cgi was very on point. However, I didn't like the inclusion of Wan Shi Ton or the rather changed role of Koh, I wasn't clear on how he steals faces given that they diverged from the original on this point. I was very disappointed at the lack of use of Hei Bai and would have preferred they expanded Hei Bai's role and focused on their special effects instead of including Wan Shi Ton and Koh. The Winter Solstice was a great story and only needed a little adjustment to fit the extended timeline without the Sozin's comet time crunch, and not what we got instead. The one positive with this storyline for me was that they kept the split of the Winter solstice story and they didn't try condensing the whole story into one episode. On reflection definitely one of the weaker episodes of the season.

I will say tho on the topic of the swamp episode. The biggest takeaway from that episode (or at least one of the biggest takeaways) was that this little girl that aang saw in his vision would be special. I always thought it was weird how Toph's inclusion was teased in that episode, as it seemed like it should lead to something much greater than just another friend to tag along and help aang. When I saw that episode as a kid, I remember thinking, "man this little girl is going to be super important down the line." I thought she was the perfect age to be aang's love interest over katara, so that katara and zuko could be a thing. I thought that was the point of her being a special vision, that she would later be revealed as Aang's love interest at the end. I have a feeling that there was some kind of plan for that which never happened

I don't dislike the show just because.
It does some things well, like turning the prince's ship crew into the regiment he stood up for as a kid in the war room.
But a lot of other things feel poorly done, like katara, in the animated show she's kind of jealous at how quick aang is to pick up bending. But they hardly do any of that here. It's like this show wants the credit of character development from the cartoon but without earning it

@ZeSgtSchultz I don't disagree. There's plenty to criticise in the live action series, but there is still a lot of promise in the cast, and with some improved writing and better score choices, we could get a live action adaption of the Avatar universe reasonable people can enjoy in its own right separate from the original animated series. I'm talking about the people who are whinging about Sokka's sexism being dropped and stuff like that. The thing is, I always felt Sokka's sexism jarred and didn't really make sense given the circumstances surrounding the village and how he must have grown up.

This episode is a mess. Definitely the worst episode of the season. Sokka's flashback doesn't make sense, in the original, Hakoda always believed in Sokka, it was always Sokka's self doubt and lack of confidence that hindered him, but he was actually always capable, and Hakoda knew that- which is why he put Sokka in charge of the village. Like this version of Hakoda literally says that Sokka "can't be trusted with human lives", then puts him in charge of protecting the entire village. Makes no sense and really butchers both Hakoda's and Sokka's character. Katara's flashback was fine, though I grinned at how the actress of young Katara was significantly more talent than Katara's actual actress.
They stuffed basically every character we've seen from the spirit world in like 5 minutes of screen time, they enter the spirit world and immediately see Wan Shi Tong, then Hei Bai, then Koh etc. It makes the spirit world feel very small. It should be an entire dimension. And the entire plot with Koh was just...boring. It didn't land at all for me. It felt like his entire character was just there so fans won't get mad- instead of serving a meaningful purpose to the story.
    Overall a bad episode.

I don't agree about it butchering the character because I think they portrayed it more as Hakoda being disappointed in his son.
