    I literally have to do the same thing, what is the term used for the disk you slid underneath, is there a link to buy it or did you fabricate it? Thanks!

      911aDay the circular base is called a torus. When I wanted a particular size for an old house with non-prefabricated columns, I had to make them myself. Otherwise I think you can buy them

    Great video, maybe next time think about using an epoxy filler for the screw holes (two part body filler works well). It will last a lot longer than caulking and will not shrink or crack when cold.

      Thanks for the advice. Definitely will be using a more permanent filler on the final part of the project. This was a quick repair done on Christmas day to help make it through the winter.

    Great video, now subscribing. I have the same repair to make, when you don't make your own, where do you purchase the plinth and torus? And what were you using to seal?

    great video!,happened to be looking at the columns on my moms historic house in south coast mass,unfortunatly for me they are alot bigger and seem hollow?,and they pretty much all look like they need repair/replace,4 of them in front actually look like they are holding up the front eve of the house,atleast your video gives me alittle hope thanks!

      Thanks Gray! Yeah these ones were hollow as well. I’m assuming it’s a lot cheaper to glue hollow pieces together, plus it would be a bit heavier if they were solid. Godspeed in the build!

    Did you find the cause for the bottom plate to rot like that. Love the vlog

    • @johnbarneswood
      @johnbarneswood  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you! Best guess is over the years that plate and the paint was beaten down by rain. It’s been a long time since certain areas of the exterior on this house have been maintained. The supporting L-shaped wooden base will also need attention this summer

    • @marymagdalene3004

      For me, it was carpenter ants who were using it as their source of food. The base gets set continuously every time it rains and after time, becomes soft and makes it very easy for the ants to eat into. They live inside the column and are eating the wood from inside out.

    what was the approx cost? I am dealing with this and need to find someone. Aldo did you call a painter or just general contractor to do the work

    • @johnbarneswood
      @johnbarneswood  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I would charge ~$150 for labor and ~$50 for materials for this. The house owners wanted to do the painting themselves to save a little money
