Where I understand the economics it was sad to see Mercury go. The cougar was slightly better appointed than the thunderbird. This one would be worth saving as they won’t be coming back
Man finds hot Cougar in junkyard I don't know what's worth picking off those. Probably the usual stuff, grille, headlight trim, some of the lenses. Console, column, cluster, some other bits. Whole interior in that car looks pretty nice. If I was building a rod I'd probably get the seats. Place where Cowboy is working, where that Trans Am was, there is a '73 Pontiac fullsize, might have a 455 in it, but it's up on the pile. May be worth a look. Any Pontiac V8 is a fast flip these days.
The front clip, dash, electrical harnesses, and I believe even the doors will go right on a similar year Ranchero, making a way cool Mercury pickup that didn't exist.

Last of the long-body 2-door sport coups. Rumour had it...that Ford/Mercury held out as long as they did(before downsizing)because they still had tons of the body panels/sheet metal in stock. My Mom had a beautiful 1979 Ford Thunderbird; last year before the extremely ugly 1980 model.
When Bob Mayer of Miami (who did car reporting segments as well as other news segments for years and is a classic car collector) asked a Ford executive about downsizing, the Ford rep said, "GM has their product cycle and we have ours". More like, "They have big bucks and we're on the balls of our ass and we have to keep this thing going to use up everything and try to squeeze out profit from this model". Chrysler was the one in big trouble though. They used a "push" system of production except for a special order. That is they didn't build based on dealer or customer orders, they built vehicles. I can't believe it made it to the junkyard with a hood ornament still on it. Most people take that off as a momento. Or kid pull it off in a parking lot. But to show up in the junkyard with it still there this new generation of Thou shalt not drill a hole in my hood and put a hood ornament on my car. Really drives me up the wall. I'd rather look at the hood ornament than the people in the car next to me cuz chances are their butt ugly and hood ornament is attractive.
