    I just bought and planted this. Im glad you showed this. I have the native milk weed in my flower beds. I cut them down and they come back up more tender for my babies

    more options for seed collecting: rubber band them before they pop open or put a nylon or sachet bag over the seed pods early to protect them from getting eaten and then harvest seed after plant starts to die back.

      Those are really good ideas! I was thinking about putting mesh baggies over them last year but never got around to it. I like the rubber band idea, especially for the bigger pods like on Showy Milkweed.

    Got some of these seeds last year. Forgot to throw them out in winter so I put them out in April, mixing lightly with loose soil, Had given up on them when they finally emerged in July. Also of some surprise (contradicting the video), several of these clearly first year plants bloomed and I am now waiting on the pods to mature.

      Wow! They must be happy at your house!
      I've had a couple volunteers that I didn't notice until they bloomed. Some of those I'm surprised that I could have missed them for an entire year, so maybe they will occasionally bloom in their first year.

    Great meeting you at the Spokane community garden expo. Didn't get the swaml milkweed going this year but my poppy patch exploded and I've got a ton of seeds to give away.

      Likewise! Thanks for following the videos!
      If you are a more passive gardener like me then just throw the seeds at the ground before winter. Some will grow next spring. Your poppies sound gorgeous!

    I purchased what looks to be a tuber of Swamp Milkweed, I layed it down to plant it, dont know how long it will take to come to surface of soil.

    • @GardenUPLandscape
      @GardenUPLandscape  ปีที่แล้ว

      That doesn't seem right. Swamp Milkweed has very fibrous roots, I've never seen one with tubers. Common Milkweed has Rhizomes, but that is not a variety that you'd want in a typical garden as it spreads by those roots and is not well behaved at all. There's another variety called Asclepias tuberosa with bright orange flowers that is names for it's root system.
      en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Asclepias_tuberosa
      So it's possible that what you purchased is a type of Milkweed, but not Swamp Milkweed. Seems a strange way to propagate though since the seeds germinate pretty easily and are very prolific this time of year. If you are in the US and want some Swamp Milkweed seeds I'll be happy to send you some. Just email me your address.

    Interesting factoid about not blooming in first year. I planted one earlier this year, and it's flourishing but no blooms, but off to a good start nonetheless.

    • @GardenUPLandscape
      @GardenUPLandscape  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes! It'll focus on it's leaves this year and you'll see flowers next summer. You're doing it right!

    How often do you need to reseed where you already have swamp milkweed planted? Like i am afraid of taking all the seed heads and then ending up having no blooms in a few years because i didnt seed some every year. Or will seeding every year make your patch unruly and large?

    • @GardenUPLandscape
      @GardenUPLandscape  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I haven't intentionally reseeded since planting my first 4 plants. That's not to say that more haven't sprung up! I have had to keep track of several volunteer milkweeds. Most of the volunteers I share with other local gardeners along with several other native plants that like to spread by seed. My Swamp Milkweed plants are about 5 years old now and I get more seeds each year. Although the blooms did look smaller this year than they have in the past, but that may have been more due to climate than anything else.
