  • The go-head has been given for self-driving cars to hit the UK's roads within two years, after a new bill designed to regulate these vehicles has now passed and become law.
Ian Collins thinks it is “arguably one of the biggest changes in motoring”.
Steve Berry, motoring journalist and former Top Gear presenter, thinks that both him and Ian Collins will be "long gone" before every car on the road is self-driving.
He says: "Even though I am a motoring enthusiast, I think that most driving is a pain in the backside and I'd be quite happy to leave the car to it."
Ian wonders if and when vehicles do become fully automated, jobs like couriers, delivery drivers and cab drivers could all be redundant.

While there are a lot of issues with these vehicles, I'm willing to wager the number of bad drivers on the road currently outnumber the amount of faults people will see.
Drink driving for example - how many deaths a year are caused by that vs a car fault? Just saying.

And Audis and the drivers do not possess any form of activated brain.....so they might as well be classed as" driverless"

Simple if you don't like driving use Public Transport or a taxi.

A toaster would make a better prime minister than the outgoing one. Problem is the muppet electorate will put Starmer in power, I’m so glad I live in Spain

They’ll work interestingly on the broken, congested, badly signed roads where I live. Self driving bicycles might help though.

This is very exciting times to me! My car has basic level 2 and can “drive for me” in traffic and as long as there are good road markings and any corner is nice and long.
I don’t believe there will ever be a totally end to end self driving car in the UK. There’s too many weird, edge case roads that the computer just wouldn’t be able to solve. On the Motorways and major routes, definitely yes!
To be able to go on a long road trip to Scotland from my home in London and only have to drive at the beginning and end of my journey? Bring it on!

Remember the driving style of these cars is programmed by other drivers and we have all seen what they are like.

Isn’t it the fully autonomous Tesla that still fails to stop for child sized mannequins in the middle of the road sometimes? If all vehicles became self driving in two years time it might work but mixing together unpredictable humans and an AI driver, even if they learn quickly, will likely cause problems.
