You got the whole set there. I just purchased a Rex 5 body for $1850. Now I gotta spend another $1850 for lenses the magazine the battery and 24fps motor
Great vid, super helpful. If you have the external motor attach to the M5, does that mean you get continuous shooting and not 30 second wind up? I looking to buy the M5, but I want continuous shooting which the EBM and EL do, but are far more expensive.
It would depend on what film you are using. If you are using reversal film, you could safety load in a dark room with an dim light source. If you are doing negative film, you need to do it in pitch black.
Copied and pasted: Vario-Switar 86-OE (18mm-86mm f/2.5) The 86-OE was introduced in 1968. It featured an automatic diaphragm, but unlike the 86EE, exposure measurements were taken through the lens. The built in meter was sensitive to film speeds from 10 to 200 ASA and powered by one (1) PX-13 1.35v mercury cell battery. Minimum aperture: f/16. Weight: approximately 2 1/2 lbs. Accepts Series VIII filters.
This tutorial only fully covers H16 Rx5 (seen in video), H16 M5, H16 SBM that were made between 1967-1970 and take the MST motor & MM mag motor. H16 EBM and H16 EL models that came later have their own built in motor and have the option of using the MM or WM mag motors. (WM allowing for faster than 24FPS) If you are using the EBM or EL bolex, this tutorial will only help you thread the film from mag through the camera.
It has been many years since I had this, but I do remember I modified the Bolex MST Battery pack to run off a Power Sonic PS series battery. The battery MST pack had a two prong 15 amp Edison plug coming from it; I cut that connector off and attached F1 female connectors to both the hot and neutral leads, then hooked them up to powersonics battery F1 male terminals. (make sure hot goes to hot and neutral goes to neutral) Make sure you don't get a battery with too much Amp Hour or you will burn out the bolex battery pack (like I did once). I'm 85% sure I used power sonic's PS-1250 12v 5ah.
It's been many years since I've used a bolex. I believe it has to been set in M mode. The motor has a small indentation which the knob fits into that prevents it from being operated in the STOP or P position.
@@luisferrusco5539 It switches off the internal camera regulator. Might get damaged otherwise. We are talking about using the MST and ESM motor connecting to the 1:1 shaft. Not the EM or older 17 motor.
It's not recommended to record sound with this camera, its a better B-roll camera. If you're looking to do sound, shoot on the Arri SR series or Arri BL16.
I really enjoyed the pertinent info. on loading a Bolex w/ a magazine. Do you have any suggestions on affordable film labs for developing your films at and where can I find a reputable place that can convert reg.16 to S16?
Just a small side note: it's not MM motor, MM stands already for magazine motor. This video is exactly what I needed. Thank you so much!

Yes, with the motor attached, it will continue to run until the batteries die or the film runs out
I wonder instead of using a dark bag. Could i load the camera in a dark room with a safe darkroom light ?

Thank you! You just saved me a ton of trouble!
As an aside, what lens is that?

Can you do that with a H16 as well or is it not built for that?

What are you using to power the motor? :) I have just bought a bolex and I am struggling to find a way of powering the motor :/

Awesome and very clear vídeo!
Question: The motor most be disengaged and in M position un order to use this External motor, right?

Yes, on REX-4 / REX-5 cameras disengaged to 0, M position AND speed set to 64.
@@michaelpetersenfilm why on 64 speed? 🤔

@@michaelpetersenfilm awesome, ty Man.
Hey what would be a better option? A turret of 3 RX prime lenses or that Vario Zoom lens?
Depends on your shooting needs and/or budget.
could you sync sound with the camera or is the motor to loud

thanks

Alphacine was the only place I used back in 2008-2010, But I heard they closed a few years ago. You could try Cinelab or Spectra Film & Video.
How many minutes can you film with a 400' magazine?
slightly over 10 mins at 24FPS
Cool

Can I shot using the camera button without the motyor?
@@نورسليمان-ظ7ي yes. It would be with the hand crank instead. Using it this way would limit shots to 30 seconds
@@cinemagicUSA Could you make a video about it please
@@cinemagicUSA I also did not understand, can the camera button move the magazine reels or what?
@@cinemagicUSA So can I put the magazine and shot just using the handgrip without the motor ? Im so nervus about the Idea
