Wow, incredible singing by all members of the cast. I agree with all of the positive comments made below about Isobel Buchanan whom I had never heard of until this video-What a VOICE!! Both tenors were outstanding!! A really magnificent production. Thank you for sharing. A definite thumbs up!!

What a find indeed, the Golden Age of the Australian Opera, Maestro Bonynge bringing to the public all these amazing forgotten operas. And the standard of singing was superb...Nothing like this we have today,

I can thank Hal Roach and Stan Laurel & Oliver Hardy for directing me to and helping me appreciate this wonderful operetta. This music will always be linked in my mind to visions of Laurel and Hardy providing truly incredible moments of laughter that has been with me since my childhood.

Why don‘t we have such great singers anymore today? Are there any teachers out there?

Ronizetti Thx for ypur information. Do you know whether she also sang Marguerite in "Faust" and the title-role in "Manon"? She would have been great in both!

Richard Bonynge grand spécialiste l'opéra Français. Dommage que Dame Joan Sutherland n'y soit pas en Zerline ça aurait été un must!

What a find in Isobel Buchanan. I keep looking out for her CDs but alas...

I have one or two of her CD's, but they are very limited in scope. Shame, she was a PHENOM!

But whatever happened to her? Dud she suffer a vocal crisis?

Eduardo Braivein - Not sure. I think she wasn't after stardom and wasn't inclined to travel? A shame, for this is one of the most beautiful voices I have ever heard. Her technique, coloratura agility and rythmn are superb!! What a tour-de-force in her aria here! - You can find her in a video of Carmen as a perfect Michella and as Lisa in a recording of Sommambula. That's sadly about it

Eduardo Braivein, I saw your next comment but you posted it on another comment where Ronizeti wouldn't see it, so I've copied it here so he can:
"Eduardo Braivein: "Ronizetti Thx for the information. Are there any recordings of her Donna Elvira in "Don Giovanni" (Aix-en-Provence, 1981 with Michael Devlin, Macolm King, Ellen Shade, Barry McCauley, Dimitri Kavrakos, Marie Christine Porta c.John Pritchard)?
      "

MrQwerty88 That may be the reason of the English text.
Was Ms.Buchanan Pamina in the ZAUBERFLOTE production you saw at the Australian Opera years ago? And was Richard Bonynge also the conductor? (the year was 1984 if I'm not mistaken).

Pity it:s not sung in French. Why?

Considering the obscurity of the opera; most of the audience would likely never have heard it before, so they won't know the story intimately. Also I think back then, they didn't have translations for the audience. I think because it's a comedy, and has dialogue. All helps if the audience knows what's being said. It needs that's language connection.
I think if it was done today, it more likely should be done in French because today's audiences have more access to have heard the work before.
I went to an Opera Australia production of Die Zauberflote years ago. They used English for the dialogue, so it actually connected with the audience. Yet they kept all the arias in German. I found that really great.

In those days (1970s) the Australian audiences were introduced to new repertoire with English versions. Some operas (mainly comedies) were always in English.
