From July to August of 2019, we toured the USA. I began filming on the drive from Atlanta to Savannah (these are the opening shots). Before the film even begins, we'd already traveled from our hometown in SoCal, to Phoenix, El Paso, Dallas, San Antonio, Austin, Houston and Atlanta. At the time of this film's beginning, we were already in the thick of touring; and you can see it in every dark circle in every eye, in every unshaven face... and we loved every minute of it.
I've always loved the idea of looking back on old photos (or videos) twenty or thirty years later; seeing yourself in your youth - how you acted, the people in your life, the music being played; the day-to-day culture of that time in your life.
Ask your parents or grandparents: I'm sure they'll smile nostalgically, wishing there could have been a vivid documentation from their youth.
That being said, my hope for this documentary is that it can act as a sort of "time machine" when we watch it thirty or forty years from now, as old-folk.
This was - by far - the greatest Summer of our lives. ALL the classic roadtrip cliches were met. We established life-long friendships with our brothers in The Red Pears; we got to goof around with our San Francisco brothers of Carpool Tunnel. We spoke in codes, Tour-Lingo those unfamiliar with the lifestyle may not catch. We ate Philly Cheesesteaks in Philadelphia, swam in the Colorado River and slept next to a graveyard in Denver. As we used to write in our 7th Grade yearbooks, "HAGS".
Lastly, I have never seen a tour doc that really captures the everyday essence of "van-life". This isn't meant to be an action-packed tabloid or anything. This is meant to be a living, breathing, sometimes-monotonous, truthful depiction of "life on the road".
