I don't know why, but when I first loaded up space engine, looked around in different directions and saw Andromeda looming back at me, my mind flipped out.
I guess it's quite something realising that the thing you've heard about all the time is actually part of reality.
I can't imagine what it's like to experience the real thing, going up to space in reality.

If you're in a place where the night sky is dark enough (far away from city lights) and it's the right time of year, you can see the Andromeda galaxy with the naked eye. In fact, it's the most distant thing the naked human eye can see. It's in the constellation Andromeda (of course) and it looks like a faint blurry smudge. The Google Sky app for Android can help you find it. I'm sure there are alternatives for iPhone.

With reference to the 180 solar mass star, typically, the largest stars have mass of about 200 solar masses. These stars burn through their fuel fast, dying early. Eventually, after a long time, the only stars left in a galaxy will be the small red ones, rendering the galaxy as red. The main way of getting big new stars like that in an old galaxy such as that would be an interaction/disturbance from another nearby galaxy (which there isn't). The alternative is that a stable H II region of space in the galaxy was disturbed by, say emissions from a supernova, causing the region to collapse into a new star. I'd say that this is the most likely scenario.

I just downloaded this off Steam two days ago and finally got it working. Using the rift and all I can say is its just EPIC. You can go in close to a planet and put it in airplane mode. You are skimming right over the surface and if you stop moving and look down you see PEBBLES. I was on a planet with sand dunes and you could see incredible details, shadows. Its so amazing!!!!!! Got a little dizzy after about 20 minutes, bit of a headache, but that's normal. I have been waiting for real VR support for this software for years and the wait was definitely worth it. I cant express how good it is. It was amazing eye candy on a PC monitor but using a VR headset it adds a dimension to it that just makes it stunning. Its just VAST, you could spend the rest of your life exploring in this and wont have a chance of seeing it all.

I'll just say it's cool that the planetary engine for both this and ED put a very similar close in orbit around Betelgeuse. I guess physics works, eh?
When I was kid Betelgeuse was one of the first things I looked at through a telescope, so it was also one of the first trips I took in ED. In that game the planet is so close and the start is so big that the ship's fuel scoop stayed active when you were at the planet's orbit. Very cool.

They need to make a game like this and KSP where you progress from a chemical rocket, to nuclear rocket, to warp drive in a universe like this. Perhaps part of the way you unlock technology would be encountering crashed tech or other civilizations. As you colonize planets, you can watch their texture go from uninhabited to lit up with lights and building scatter objects. Maybe incorporate terraforming tech that you have to deploy, hostile NPCs, asteroid diversion, impending nova evacuation, etc. I guess it could be a Spore, KSP, Universe Engine combo.

Listen; when you're thinking big, think bigger than the biggest thing ever and then some. Much bigger than that in fact, really amazingly immense, a totally stunning size, real 'wow, that's big', time. It's just so big that by comparison, bigness itself looks really titchy. Gigantic multiplied by colossal multiplied by staggeringly huge is the sort of concept we're trying to get across here.

Stormboxer uhhh no. Universe Sandbox 2 and Space Engine are 2 different games designed entirely for different purposes. Space Engine is designed for exploring the entire universe without any limits with great visuals and procedural generation. Universe Sandbox 2 is designed to be a universe physics simulator. Sure, while space engine has extremely good visuals, the orbital mechanics are basic and mostly on rail while universe sandbox has a fully feature dynamic N-Body physics, but lacks in the visuals department. And those are just the tip of the differences. Honestly I don’t understand why people compare those 2 games together, they are entirely different games meant for entirely different purposes.
