I really hope this interior look with Carl becomes similar to first impressions with Sandy. Very interesting engineering take of the interior of a vehicle. This would be a great addition to the tear down series, with it launched before the interior is ripped out down to components. Carls very comfortable in front of the camera, and his analogies are easy to follow. Great Job!
It’s the voice, man! It’s the voice! He should be doing all these relaxing videos, after watching it I feel like I achieved some higher consciousness level
The door handles electronically open when you approach with the key, then fold in when you move. It is in fact very intuitive; and the interior has been one of the most lauded of recently reviewed vehicles.
Exactly. All you need is the key, walk up to the vehicle and the door handles come out. They probably had issues because they were standing there with the key, and after a while the handles automatically retract.
Door handles on this trim level open automatically when you walk up with the key fob. They shut when you hit ~5mph or lock the car. As intuitive as it gets if you let them do their thing. Lower trims have manual door handles but lower trims are well under $50k.
Not sure what's up with this car's handles. They should pop out as long as the door's unlocked, and then pop in as soon as the doors lock (which they automatically do as soon as you start driving). Pressing the little square in the center is the lock/unlock button if you have the key fob. But with they key fob in your pocket they should auto-unlock just by walking up to it.
I agree the pop-out door handles are counter intuitive. Not necessarily everyone who approaches the vehicle to open the door has a key fob. There is also a mechanism there times four to pop out the handles and those are thing that may break and add mass to the vehicle. Sure, flush handles are more aerodynamic, but how much more aero than a boring regular handle? Does the added mass affect the energy economy less than the zero improvement? Raymond Lowe is one of my favorite industrial designers and Lowe eschewed unnecessary complexity. I like Lowe’s Interior treatment of the 1963 Studebaker Avanti. Given that it is done with 1960s technology, the Avanti interior still plays very well for what it is. I’m not so fond of the slab front of the Avanti exterior, but it looks great from the side and rear - - and it was designed in only six weeks!
Carl, your knowledge and your skillset makes me think you are the best presenter for things I have never spent much time thinking about but that affect me every day. Good job!
I have to say - this is a bit of a surprise coming from you folks. Especially the handle situation early and throughout the remainder of the video. The handle automatically retracts and opens depending on the users settings, inclusive of whether you lock, unlock, drive the vehicle, drive the vehicle to a preset speed, engage drive/park. I would suggest in the future to read the manual before jumping to conclusions as to what is actually deficient from the vehicle. I made the same mistake when I took delivery of my EV6 back in February.
August 10th 2022 .. just picked up my EV6 GT-LINE AWD. On this model, the door handles auto present. As for the interior, it takes some getting use to. I've found the door arm rest and center console arm rest to be a little harder than I like...not soft enough for me. The seats are firmer then I expected but still comfortable. Took me two days to find my optimum driving seating position. The car is loaded with tech and there is a big learning curve. Techies will love the tech, but not necessarily the interface for access. If you are not a techie, you may want to find a different EV or just drive this one with all the default settings. I went from a 2015 Tesla Model S AWD to this car and love the softer, yet controlled ride. Since front leg room is more then adequate it would be rare for the front seat to be pushed the whole way back and even when it is, there is a ton of room in the backseat and the seats recline slightly and they are firm but comfortable. The fit and finish of this car is A+ in my humble opinion. It is a joy to drive.
All those commenting want a $100k car for a $57k price. If you haven’t brought a new car in 2022, you have no idea how the EV market is now. EV6 is one of the best EV’s with much better efficiency, range, tech and regen breaking for this price that you can buy TODAY. If you want a cheaper car with luxury interiors for this price then get an ICE vehicle or wait a year to get your EV on reservation. If this car is so bad why is it selling for markups ranging from $5k-20k. Oh not to mention it can charge faster than a Tesla and as fast as a Porsche.
I thoroughly enjoy listening to Carls insights. He presents his findings in a very digestible fashion. It almost triggers some sort of ASMR as he works his way through the materials and construction. Seems like a good bloke too. Great job Carl 👍
Interiors are so not understood by most people. This gives a real insight into the complexity, the deep thinking, and the often ridiculous solutions a manufacturer ends up choosing. It makes one redesign it as Carl goes through his analysis, and realise that somehow the artists haven't been to accountancy school, or even have much in the way of hands-on experience. So much money could have been saved, so much unrealised profit extracted, and even a greater feeling of premium quality added by more joined-up thinking. Great episode!
I went for a test ride in an EV6 with that exact same interior. Tons of black, narrow windows, and the tiny sunroof make it feel like you are sitting in a bunker. You can get white seats that may brighten it up more. Otherwise, I like the design/style. But the car seems priced a few grand too high. The non-GT-Line models, like the Wind RWD, are a better buy. As always, I love how Carl dissects the construction, materials, and choices regarding the interior design.
Carl, I thank you for taking the time to explore this vehicle from an industry perspective. As a consumer, we don't always see or notice things to the same level of detail -- your interpretation is really insightful. Thanks from Canada!
I really enjoy that you take the time to explain the pluses and minuses of the design choices and how they affect aesthetics, cost, durability, etc. I take that over to my own vehicles and can see how my car has those same trade-offs. (Video bonus: I haven't seen someone rocking a tie bar for a long time! There's usually a story behind a tie bar)
I have watched and enjoy dozens of Munro Live videos. After watching their EV6 coverage, it almost sounds like they are trying to bring the car down. Carl is putting a lot of his personal taste ahead of what an inspection should be. And comparing this to fisher price...come on. Many cars this price range have bottom part of the door made of hard plastic. Can't wait to hear what they this of the driving experience. 🤔
I know what you mean. If it’s not a Tesla, it’s not right… They continuously seem to push for the reduction of buttons, not because it’s better but because it’s cheaper for manufacturers. Their engineers seem both very experienced yet ill informed of the market at the same time - too detail focused but blind to the bigger picture.
The fact that Carl flubbed the door handle thing and made a huge deal about nothing really set the tone about how they approached the car as a whole. Through all that he never once tried "unlock" on the fob to auto present the handles (every GT-Line can do this) Just rubbed me the wrong way how he's all like "I don't know why it's not working and don't want to try the single most common sense thing possible to fix it". The fact this car still gets 7500 federal rebate and only takes 2 or 3 months to get (vs 12+ Tesla with monthly price hikes and no rebate) is why I ordered one.
Good review however -->17:18 you forgot to mention one important thing regarding the rear trunk, the top rollable canvas can be removed and completely hidden under the trunk floor. It has a special space designed for it.
Carl, as a fellow middle aged, middle income, overweight white guy with male pattern baldness, I can totally appreciate where you are coming from. I even have some piano black in my car which I have banned the kids from touching. (They ignore me, go figure.) However, the ev6 isn’t made for us, it’s designed for the tech savvy 25 to 35 year old who may have a child or two but they are into surfing, tennis and snow skiing. . The Ionique, 5 which as you know is built on the same -platform as the ev6 is designed for men of our ilk. (And bulk?) I heard a few complaints from you about materials, door handles and manufacturing wastage but this would be as nought to the well heeled jet set among us who prefer style to practicality any day. Actually the persons view of the ev6 I would be interested in is Mr Munro’s intelligent and charming wife. She certainly has the credentials to make an informed opinion while being a bit more open than us luddites to creativity. Just sayin…😉
Hey 👋 guys can we have Carl in a casual look as it would make me feel more relaxed watching this guy actually been more relaxed thus more detail flowing naturally 🤞🏽 x
"If it was me . . . " It isn't you, Carl. I understand your assessment of an interior designed by someone else - indeed, I found things that never would have occurred to me, as a consumer - but I still look forward to delivery of my (apparently flawed) EV6.
Munro and his cohorts, incl. Electric Viking (always pushing his audience to buy BYD, Xpeng stocks) is all about Chinese BEVs. Tesla is just a cover to save face lol. I've seen them trash Korean, Japanese, American, German BEVs, but NEVER Chinese brands.
It would be really interesting to know what everyone's daily driver is to get context for their taste. Or maybe their favorite car on the market. For example, Carl probably drives a 2007 PT Cruiser. 🤣
I am convinced that one of the first questions that Sandy asks during the interview for prospective engineers is... Sandy: "Where do you see yourself in 10 years?" Interviewee: "On my front porch yelling at the neighborhood kids to get off of my lawn!" Sandy: "We only hire grumpy old men. You Sir, are hired."
I have heard bench seats may be making a comeback. I loved them in the past. I might love them again. What do you think? Would you love to have bench seats again? It sounds roomier that the cockpits of today!
This was very insightful. Thanks for the review and explanation, most car reviews don´t look at things from the functional or engineered point of view.
What I'm signing on to is Voice recognition now. I love the fact I can tell my car to change channels or turn on the lights or tell it what song I want. Don't know why you edited out the door panel, he was getting into some seirous details! Thank you..... and the Fisher-Price burn❤🔥
yup! nothing like new products! nice vid! nice 2 know there are professionals examining the quality matrix!! KIA built the first automatic automotive assembly plant in Tennessee! yup! the build & flow of the product makes the sales volume, & useability. of any product! this is almost like a motor trends!!!
I really have to respect how much Carl tries to stay objective, despite how much he personally seems to hate this style. I really love the sci fi spaceship design of the KIA EV6
If I owned that vehicle I'd take the carpet out of the back, I'd remove the fiber board panel below it and apply a non-slip material to the hard plastic below. The I'd put a practical carpet on the lowered floor, and raise the cargo volume spec. There are few times when having the rear deck flush with the bumper is more advantageous than a lowered floor that acts to retain things. Hooks for a $20 cargo net to hold grocery bags erect across the rear would be more practical than the plush carpet.
The carpet is pretty ridiculous, but the load floor height is adjustable because when you fold the rear seats it creates a flat surface at the highest position, or gives you maximum cargo space with the seats up when in the lowest position.
Excellent review thank you! Specially the test of the materials it really makes you feel what materials used around the car. Hopefully we can see this for Every car going forwards. Many thanks to Carl!
Thank you for showing this vehicle. I saw a red one tonight at the Narrow Gauge Inn. (Near Yosemite). I took a quick look. At $57,000 it is very much out of my league. It is a Hatchback, but bigger and higher than mine. (I have the A3 eTron.) You called it a sales pitch, I would say it’s a product demo. Thank you for your efforts. 2 👍🏼👍🏼
Thank you, Carl. Your insights are valuable to someone like me who is shopping for a new EV. I wish Munro & Associates could get another VW ID.4 and let you review the interior.
Great analysis. Interestingly, in the back, I had the opposite problem, based on my proportions. I’m 5’11” but have a taller torso. Head room wasn’t great. I had to lean the seat back to make it reasonable. I like this car a lot though. Wish it was about 5K cheaper, but a pretty nice offering from Kia.
My wife and I love our EV6 interior, but we are techy nerds. we specced the rubber mats for the boot and backs of the rear seats which are great for when you're hauling surfboards/ snowboards/ camping gear. Really well designed ergonomic interior, feels like piloting a fighter plane. Only complaints are the piano black (why? So annoying), USB placement (constantly swapping from the android auto phone connection and my entire music collection stored on a USB is annoying) and the placement of the park button behind the steering wheel, wish it was near the gear selector like on my wife's Hyundai Kona Electric
Dear guys Carl had such a great explanation . And Kevin as-well congratulations to you guys for good employees 😎🥳😉🤓 keep up the great details & content
Great report. I really like the many, many points highlighted for scrutiny. It has alerted me to more things I should look at when I start my research into my next car.
Hyundai / Kia /Genesis, I appreciate very much your BEVs for 800V technology, 230V AC power supply inside the car with 3.6kW power (in Europe) and V2load. If a BEV dont has the feature of getting energy out of the battery, for me, its not a real BEV. I love the spaceship design, sportiness feeling and the easy use of buttons instead of touching screen menues. The seats are great and the shape of the EV6 is gorgeous. I'm sure, no one touches his head on the front seats in case of an accident, if he uses the seat belts. What I dont like are the handles. I dont have the premium GT Line with automatic door handles and the piano black is the most stupid thing car manufacturers can do for there costumers. Over all the EV6 is a great well designed car and looks so good in marine blue or green. White and black is a little bit boring and swallow the shape of the car.
Thanks this is great to find out what other EV's are doing with their interiors. I liked how you presented and you know your stuff. For sure the interior is important. Fisher Price lol...
Carl, you nailed it, when I looked at the interior I just saw Blaah, the dark headliner should be the same color as the dash to lighten up the interior and the piano black is so yesterday and a major pain. The big dash screen looks like an addon from JC Whitney like so many, it needs to be design integrated but built into the dash just not bolted on. Give me buttons, the stuff on the screen has you constantly taking your eyes off the road and yes it is constantly changing with each push or like so many screens even befor your finger touches the screen, so you are chasing something and not paying attention to driving....again. The carpet in the rear should be anchored, it's nice to have removable to clean and yes it is grossly over priced! Makes my 2014 Leaf look better every day!
I have been trying to remember to cars back in the 50's early 60's and these Ridiculous door handles seem to remind me more of Desoto, Chrysler, etc.. Why are car companies now, Tesla, Kia, etc... making these terrible non-ergonomically door handles. The elderly and handicapped people have a difficult time using such stupid handles. Why is everyone not using a more FUNCTIONAL style door handle, as those used on the 70's AMC cars? By the way, where is Sue? Great show.
yup - for being "car people" it was really a let down to see them flub something like that. Simply hitting "unlock" would have popped them out since every GT-Line has that feature.
Some versions/markets have something different to the piano black, wish mine did. Definitely with you on the dark headliner, my base model has a grey(?) liner, much better, but that's the same on most cars with them. False floor might be there to go on top of the load cover when it's not in use (fits in the widest part just ahead of the rear panel)
A really well put together review. With the head rests forward does the top of the back of the seat become dangerous for rear passengers in the same way a USB plug would? Also re the shallow under floor area in the back, for me that would be a perfect place to store the charging cable which I hardly ever use but need to carry.
Carl Can you give us examples of what is expensive and what is cheap for interior surfaces? Plastics mostly and vinyls. I drove Mercedes with ALL leather seats, wool carpet and real wood. Those days are gone?
I bet the front seats' plastic cushion interface will trap long hair and pull the person's hair as they get out of the seat. Also, I hope they have good air bags in the back for the rear passengers because a head on collision could mean they'll be smashed into the hard plastic of the front seats; I thought the built in handles were a good idea until Carl demonstrated a passenger head butting it.
I actually like the interface design of this car. The rear storage is ridiculous and the front of the carpet will be curled from being stuck between the panel and the rear seat in less than a year in our famous Texas heat
Good job :) The narrow hard plastic behind the headrest looked designed to cave in the forehead of any large person in a head-on accident! Think you should have tried to pitch forward with the rear seatbelt on??
very informative review. I would say interior is very experimental stage not fully mature. It might designed by who does not knows very well of EV design. Also came to notice that rear view sight is not clear rather it is narrow compared to other cars.
Fixed buttons are better as long as you don't have too many of them. The point of driving is keeping your eyes on the road as much as possible and not interacting with any type of screen for very long. The screen trend needs to be modified to get back to the function of driving. Too many smart-phone ways have crept into cars and that's not a good thing. Overall I appreciate the analysis and it is well done. However, I think there's something to be said for cars having decorative elements and maybe efficiency doesn't do anything for people who need to live with a car on a daily basis. Many people appreciate quirks and character and if a car is devoid of these little touches, then it becomes sterile. Tesla, IMO, borders on sterile in their interior spaces. It can be less sterile, at least this type of interior, if it has a few touches (like XPeng or NIO may be putting in. Or perhaps, Polestar). Tesla tries to add it in the software. But that's where we getting into the whole screen-centric foible. The character can come from other aspects, like the Italians put into Alfa Romeo. That's the secret sauce that needs to make it into EVs because cars still need to have that car character to them opposed to a consumer electronic device feel to them. Thanks, Carl. Great job.

The handles pop out automatically only on higher spec grades. This one has the GT-line dash so it would have the automatic handles.
It's the same on my jag
To me these cars lack a design cohesion it's got a little of every manufacturer and ends up as the sum of the parts are less than the pieces
How can a car engineering and review company miss this? Munro has been having these brain farts for a while now.. Not a good look at all.
Damn, Carl brought his machine gun and never stopped firing 😧 what an interior review 👏👏👏 excellent technical appreciation and wording 👌👌

Absolutely a fantastic job! Your perspective is what most people want to see. Thanks!
I really have to respect how much Carl tries to stay objective, despite how much he personally seems to hate this style. I really love the sci fi spaceship design of the KIA EV6
Carl Needs to more videos I love hearing his point of view, would like to know what cars he’s worked on
I like Salty Carl. Good overview with a lot of valid points. Seems like a lot of optimization potential.
Thanks Carl! I enjoyed this video very much.
absolutely love that interior
then again I own and drive a Kia EV6 .... would still.buy a tesla over this for the $$$$ but still I like where kia is going
A great review of the perceptions and construction in this interior.
Very interesting, not least hearing about the thought process when approaching the materials and how they've been manufactured and handled. Thanks!
Honest reviews... keep them coming! Great breakdown detailing usability.
The door handle did momentarily retract when Carl moved the 'shift' lever____@1:11
LOL Can't wait for that Fisher-Price teardown :). Great job Carl.
Very well done and very comprehensive look at the vehicle.
Thank you for this type of review. It’s funny now when I get into a car I look at it with the new insights I learn while watching your videos.
I do like Carl! Good job. I like his style or He likes the styles I like.
Carl's a star! Love the suit.
What happened to skywell imperium et5 review
Hi Carl,
That was great, really enjoyed it. Nice to have feel and design view of a car when checking in to munro. Really great!
I agree with get rid of the black. Not only does it attract dusk and show smudges, it gets hot!!!
I actually prefer the interior to the Ioniq 5. I like the sportier feel. Agree about the piano black and USB placement though.
Great video! Gives me more validation that our household did not purchase a Kia/Hyundai BEV.
And I'm loving the chevy equinox ev just can't wait
Thanks this is great to find out what other EV's are doing with their interiors. I liked how you presented and you know your stuff. For sure the interior is important. Fisher Price lol...
The EV6 is very outspoken, works great with it’s Ioniq 5 brother which is more traditional and safe. Great business move.
I'm learning all of my car's voice commands. To me, that's the next step, Alexa or Siri as your co-pilot
The ev6 runs circles around the leaf. That was one of the fugliest cars in all of creation, second only to the fiat multipla.
@@marksherman2862 Want to have some fun with Alexa...Cuss at it and see what happens, mine kept telling me that wasn't very nice!
@@ubuu7 It is Ugly but very easy to find in a parking lot, mine has the nic name Fat As-, but it has been trouble free!
Definitely do more of these, I’d love to see carls take on the ioniq5
Carl, great review, interesting and knowledgeable. Thx
Carl: 'l hope you've enjoyed some of my insights'
Me: Bloody Hell, sure have!
Great show.
Get this man a MunroLive vest!
The handles pop out when you approach with the key.
yup - for being "car people" it was really a let down to see them flub something like that. Simply hitting "unlock" would have popped them out since every GT-Line has that feature.
It's OK Carl, it took me 2 weeks to get used to driving my EV6. but I love my car, but my Wind RWD doesn't hold the door handle open for me.
Thank You Carl... well done (as usual).
I wonder what Carl thinks about chrome trim being plastic vs metal. Imagine a chrome trim exactly like the side of an iPhone. Real and would look good
A really well put together review.
With the head rests forward does the top of the back of the seat become dangerous for rear passengers in the same way a USB plug would?
Also re the shallow under floor area in the back, for me that would be a perfect place to store the charging cable which I hardly ever use but need to carry.
Nice job Carl. Love the suit! I hate piano black in my tesla!
I like dudes honesty like my head was spinning if I wanted it but na I'ma finish paying off my current car
Carl rules. Another fantastic review.
Your insight is greatly appreciated.
Beautiful color!
It’s not a “head rest”, it’s a head restraint for anti-whiplash injury.
I mean you aren't mean to manually push the handle open like that on the GTL...you're supposed to just unlock the car and it pops out on its own. lol
Great job.
Always an interesting watch. Thanks Carl.
Excellent Carl.
Nice job I seen many reviews on EV6 best one on interior.
