I miss it there so much. Honestly it's ironic how the two cleanest and safest cities I've spent my expat years in Europe, Istanbul and Moscow; are in countries under a constant smear campaign by english speaking press, even when they've not really done anything newsworthy. Meanwhile London and New York are disgusting crime ridden and in decline compared to even just 20 years ago.

As a migrant. Life for you is great. You can speak with your comfortable mouth and place. But as a citizen of Turkey. Life is terrible. There is no respect to human life, people can’t afford rent, imprisonment left right centre for criticism of the state, people killed and kept under detention without a proper judicial system. Turkey should be boycotted by the foreigners like you. No one should go until human rights and democracy prevails.

Heres something you may find interesting. :)
The name of my country has nothing to do with the interesting and delicious bird ''turkey'', well let me explain. :)
Name of my country has always been Turkiye, that is Turk-iye, where the -iye suffix means ''land of/belonging to''...
...just like the Latin suffix -ia in such countries as Latv-ia, Roman-ia, Eston-ia, Austr-ia, Austral-ia etc etc. Another example; decades ago Czechoslovakia Republic changed it's name to Czech Republic and a few years ago changed that to Czechia (that is Czech-ia).
Anyways, most likely the Latin -ia suffix was derived from the Turkish version -iye,
as Turkish is much much older.
Because in old times people of different languages could only pronounce it as their languages allowed them, we got various differences in spelling like Turchia (in Italian), Turquie (in French) and Turkey (in English) all trying to resemble the pronounciation of ''Turk-ia'' thus Turkiye.
Mind you this was way BEFORE the animal we currently know as 'turkey'' was found by the europeans when they explored the north americas....
...they came across the bird and thought it was a specie of the fowl/chicken they had been buying from the country of Turkiye at the time, so they named the bird ''Turkey Fowl'' meaning ''Turkish Chicken''.....
....just like how a dog breed is known as German Shepherd (because it's from Germany), Rhodesian Ridgeback (because it's from Rhodesia), American Bulldog, British Terrier, Greek Harehound etc etc.
In time you don't get to call the Greek Harehound as simply as ''Greek''; or you don't call the British Terrier as ''British''; or the German Shepherd as ''German'', but in time the Turkish Fowl started to be called just ''turkey'', and has been going on for hundreds of years.
Now in 2023, this is causing confusion, especially when we have people across the world unable to point to their OWN country on the atlas, this ''confusion over the naming'' needed to be corrected.
So my country decided to rectify this confusion that has been going on for so long and corrected the name in other languages to Türkiye, which it always was, we basically didn't change the name of our country, we changed the mistake made in the English language. : )
So, there's some tid bit information for you to have a great day, if you read upto this point you have a great night too, ohh just have a wonderfull life. : )
      Best wishes. ;)

I love the compassion of Turks towards stray animals. I saw this in every city I went to. All of the stray animals were clean and fat. I have seen very few of them in bad shape. What I mean by bad is that it's a little weak. Cats are magnificent creatures that make the world beautiful.

It breaks my heart that there are so many homeless cats though. Do they have a spade and neutering program? They should. All these cats should have loving homes as they will live longer and happier lives. Living outside there are so many dangers for them, regardless if most people are looking after them.

Awesome to hear that you're now a fellow Istanbullu, Doug. Sorry about the residence permit issue -- if it's any consolation, a lot of us old-timers are worried about that too. Moda is hands-down my favorite neighborhood in Istanbul, but do bear in mind that it's a high-risk area for earthquakes. At the very least, you should make sure your building is soundly constructed. O.k., enough doom and gloom -- hope to see more videos of this amazing city!

Foods are delicious. Turkey has an excellent geographic situation. You can find the sea, mountains, and forests together. I love Turkey, visit every year. There is also another NY style bagel joint in Beyoğlu called New York Bagel and Coffee if you find yourself on the European side craving something. Down the street from it is a great chicken place called Beyoğlu Tavukçusu and as you probably know great antiques to be had in that area. Not sure how much you have travelled in the rest of the country but the Trabzon region is wonderful as well as around Urfa and Mardin. I hope you're able to get a residency permit, you're living my dream to live in Turkey for a bit.

As a Turk living in Istanbul, I think you live in the most beautiful part of Istanbul. The European side has a large population, many tourists, and prices are expensive. The Anatolian side is calmer, more local, but if we talk specifically about Kadıköy, it is more liberal. Kadıköy, Moda was the right choice. I hope you get your residence permit, Istanbul is the most beautiful city in the world, being crowded means an increase in the rental price for locals like me, but we can also share this city with people who will add value to Istanbul.

I just came across your channel today and saw your video with the lady in Baghdad. I really enjoyed it and wanted to see more so I subscribed. I clicked on this video because it intrigued me vastly. You have come to the same common reasoning as I did 4 years ago to move to Istanbul. I have been in the UK going into 24 years now, and because I travel a lot, I wanted a place where everything comes together in a balance to a degree, nothing is perfect of course, but Istanbul was way far ahead of everywhere else. So I decided to buy an apartment there. The only thing is, I researched the future planning of the city and realise most development is happening in the west, so I bought a place in Esenyurt. My place is a little bit bigger, but practically the same concept. Like very insignificant difference, but at least I have a location to use as a point of return. It's been years, since I had to take the bus when I'm there to reach the city, but now the metro line is opening, the airport is north of me and in the west a massive redevelopment is taking place.
I am glad to hear of someone thinking similarly. I wish you the very best and also wished to say that Istanbul is a land of opportunity of you make it. So many amazing people, places, culture and international ties. It's truly the centre of the world if you do it right.

It's the city that's like, 'Why choose between Europe and Asia when you can have both?' Seriously, it's the land where one side prefers baklava for breakfast, and the other side is all about croissants. Visited it before as we filmed one of our episode last year and with my first hand experience, no wonder you have chosen it. I would love to go back there for sure.

wash the tea leafs with cold water first and then pour the hot water. Otherwise you are burning the tea leafs. I learnt it from a tea house owner, try it.

Very nice. I grew up in Erenkoy - Caddebostan back in the days of two story villas. I attended Lycee Saint Joseph which is next to Moda. It has nice grounds. Moda has a yacht club. There are also nice little neighborhoods all along the Bosphorus like Kuzguncuk, Kanlica, ... Yenikoy across in Europe along the Bosphorus has very nice Yalis, waterfront villas. If you can get into one of those that would be nice. Some of them are historic.

Hello Doug! What’s up? I’m the translator (Tevfik) at the notary who helped with the notarization of your rental contract in February, becoming an instant subscriber. I’ve seen your travels throughout the year. Watching this video, I see that we’re incredibly close, like next street. We can hang out if you still have my number. I can be your guide and improve your Turkish so that you make your next vid in Turkish 😊

Hi Elvis. I live in Moda too and I have a question for you. Do you know if the notary can help in the preparation of a will, or should I see a lawyer for this? The reason I ask is that a few years ago the notary in Bahariye Caddesi said they could help with this issue. What's your advice on this?

@@ELVIS1975T Thanks for your reply. I'll visit the notary in Bahariye Caddesi again and see what they say. There was a period when I had to get my British passport translated for my ikamet tezkeresi which is when I asked them, but fortunately that requirement is now behind us.
