‘Spend more, tax more’ and ‘deliver worse outcomes’: NZ PM on previous Labour government

- New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon says it was a skill of the previous Labour government to “spend more, hire more, borrow more, tax more” and “deliver worse outcomes” across the country.
Mr Luxon won the 2023 New Zealand election, forming a coalition with David Seymour’s ACT Party and Winston Peter’s NZ First.
“The reality is, I think, outcomes went backwards,” Mr Luxon told Sky News host Erin Molan.
“Despite an 84 per cent increase in government spending, 18,000 more public servants hired in our capital in Wellington, despite people being taxed more, borrowing went from $5 billion to $100 billion.
“It’s quite a skillset, to be honest, to be able to spend more, hire more, borrow more, tax more and deliver worse outcomes across the economy, across health, across education, across crime.”
Ardern will go down in history as the worst Prime Minister in New Zealand. Listing her mistakes is like drawing a circle.

The last NZ government had to be the worst ever in my 38 years of being a voter - and I was a die-hard Labour/Greens supporter. Not anymore. The economic and social damage they did to the country has been massive. It's left a complicated political mess with inflamed racial tensions and rampant crime with gangs more powerful than ever. You can't just conveniently blame covid like they did - it was mind-boggling mismanagement at executive level with Ardern largely responsible who then arrogantly quit when the writing was on the wall. Luxon and co. have got a huge job on their hands to rebuild confidence in NZ and stabilise society. Best of luck to them.

He misquoted the figure. 2009 to 2017 large increase in public debt 50 billion ( used for earthquake and income tax cuts) 2017 to 2023 used to fund wage subsidies during covid19 ( save small business and others , increase spend on road maintenance compared to 2009 to 2017 . Increased education building spending to name a few. Look at hansard) .

Bill English was borrowing 87 million a week for years under John keys national goverment. People have short memories and are naturally biased when it comes to blaming the other side. NZ needs to live within its means and restrict immigration, follow Norways model with regard to oil and introduce capital gains tax.

Facts show it's National that puts NZ into massive debt. For instance, the Key, English National govt incurred more debt. Under the Ardern Labour govt, for example, NZ's debt was one the of the lowest in the OECD, despite the global pandemic.

Every PM has to deal with some sort of issue, that’s part of the deal. No one is disputing Ardern saved lives, however at what cost? She destroyed the very fabric of New Zealand. Caused untold harm. Look at the kids who missed school, the explosion in mental health. Lost businesses, and cost of living crisis. And colossal debt our kids are straddled with. Not to mention social disharmony. These are all byproducts of Arden’s bad policy.

If I cannot get into something very soon, me and my family will be homeless, not that I expect you or anyone else with your train of thought to care. If this is just the beginning in terms of Nationals tenure, I shudder to think how many other people out there will suffer through this governments decision making processes.
