Calgary to Edmonton Single Day Bike Ride

- A 300km bike ride in a single day, by far my longest ever continuous bike ride. 12 hours in the saddle; I left Calgary just before 6am and arrived in Edmonton around 8pm. Definitely one to remember! I always love this ride, because even though it is a long distance, there's a new town almost every hour, so food/drink stops are abundant! Very nice. We hope you brought along plenty of supplies. It's hard to get anything in the middle of nowhere. 🤨😊
One of the best things about this route is you're in a new town basically every hour, so it helps with the mental side of riding a long bike ride, and helps to re-supply as you go.
Stopped at subway in my home town lol, insane ride
I pretty much always stop at the Subway in Carstairs, haha. It's the perfect distance for a meal stop: 60km/3 hours into the ride!
im in shock you are able to do that much distance in a day
My secret cheat: Edmonton is lower elevation than Calgary, so it's downhill and mostly flat!
@@AustinSersenhow was the trip back lol
@@xdn22 I may or may not have ridden the bus back two days later. ;)
Omg, I have no words.
I'm in shock. That was a very far bike travel. You must be sore after. I wonder how many hours it took. You did great btw =)
Yeah, my best day is maybe 110km. 300km, awesome dude!
This is very inspiring to see someone like yourself do this. I wish I could’ve at least joined you or anyone else who is that determined at the half way mark for my enjoyment and/or support. 😅
Amazing! So that Blackfalds (?) pathway system, that's pretty cool !
Yes, that's definitely one of the highlights on the route! I'm not sure how recently it was built, but I think it might have been built as part of the Trans Canada Trail; or at least the trail currently uses this pathway.
Dude right on , definitely have inspired me and my buddy to ride from Edmonton to Calgary and possibly some other rides including from Edmonton to Jasper
You're going to have a blast! Probably best to stay overnight in Red Deer if doing Edmonton-Calgary. I was okay destroying myself on this ride as I didn't have to ride the next couple of days, haha. I actually wasn't too hurt after this, but I could barely climb the stairs at the Elks game the next day.
That's pretty great! I've played with the idea of a such a trip (other way around) and I've even planned out a route. You average 25 kph, which is certainly a doable speed for me - but probably not for so long! Biking across Edmonton and back is a nice, long ride, for me. Definitely a bucket list idea, though, even if I cut it into a multiple day ride.
Definitely do it! Yeah, 25km/h might be a bit of a push over this kind of distance, but definitely doable if you stay overnight in Red Deer both ways. It is harder getting from Edmonton to Calgary with the few hundred metres of elevation gain. I'll give you a free chain clean/lube if you do it; just let me know! Also worthwhile is riding the On-It bus to Banff for less than $20 (Fri/Sat/Sun) with your bike and then riding the bike all of the way back for the ~130km trip.
I can’t imagine how your legs felt after😂 amazing!
Not terrible; just don't ask me to squat down and pick something up! 😂
You're crazy :D
My hope is that cycling anywhere and everywhere becomes less crazy in the minds of the majority!
Well done man! I've done only one 300lm ride when I belonged to the BC Randonneurs and it nearly broke me. I stuck to 100km and 200km rides after that.
To be fair, this might be the flattest 300km in Canada, and Edmonton's around 500m lower than Calgary...and the winds predominantly blow towards the north/east. All the factors were helping me!
I took this on without a significant amount of preparation. The week before, I was like: I'm going to ride to Edmonton in a single day this time, and thankfully it worked out!
@@AustinSersen Oh for sure, but still a lot of time in the saddle. The 300km brevet i did was from Vancouver towards Deroche and back, along the Fraser river. It had some good climbs along the way.
What saddle are you on?
@@p.g.reitsma7245 A cheap 49N (Live to Play) saddle. Model FORMFIT ERGO MEMORY FOAM SADDLE 142MM. Seems to work okay for me, and is way more comfortable than the stock Selle Italia Novus Boost Evo Superflow Saddle Black 145 mm that came with my Canyon Endurace since I'm on the heavier end of the spectrum.
@@AustinSersen I see. Saddles are so personal and it takes a while to find one that works for longer rides. I was a Selle San Marco Concor fan for years, until I tried a Selle Anatomica about 15 years ago and have them on my commuter and touring bikes.
Nice video austin. What's the altimetry during ride bike. Goods musics rs
Hey Daniel, Calgary is about 1100m above sea level, and Edmonton is just under 700m (at least the parts I rode on this ride). Total climbing on this ride was 567m...doesn't get much flatter than that!
Well done, Austin! What an epic ride. And then back to Calgary the next day? 😂 Does the ride from Edmonton to Calgary feel harder with the slight elevation?
Nvm. Just read one of your other comments lol
Nah, I actually had a friend drive my bike back down to Calgary a couple days later (he's from Edmonton but going to school at U of C, so was making the journey anyways!), and I took the Rider Express bus back. I was a little short on time being peak bike repair season, so I had to get back to Calgary ASAP, and my left shifter stopped working reliably...ended up getting it warrantied the day before leaving for my US trip.
impressive! just curious whats your plan b if you were out of your energy before the end?
There really was no plan B. I had the hotel room booked in advance in Edmonton, so I had to make it, haha. I guess I would have done my best to make it to the Edmonton Airport and begged a bus driver to let me bring the bike on board or take a taxi, but that would have only saved 20km. Started feeling exhaustion in my hips around Ponoka.
Do you have strava?
I would love to do this ride any plans to do this again ?? I would love to join I'm definitely looking at your Google maps and really considering this myself end of July 2024
Most likely not again this year. Maybe next year in the fall. Both time related, fitness related, and trying to ride on new roads! I might do some more longer rides between Calgary and Red Deer, like a day trip to Olds and back.
