How do the repulsive forces which exist between the central metal atom or ion and the ligands destroy the degeneracy of d-orbitals?
Because all the d orbitals do not experience same repulsion from the ligands.. Those lying in the direction of ligands are affected to a larger extent while those lying in between the ligands are less affected. Thus the orbitals along the axes of ligands acquire higher energy while the orbitals lying in between the ligands acquire less energy due to less repulsion.
