- A key to resilience is diversifying the foods we grow and thus our diets. Do you grow jujubes? What do you like about them? What would you say to folks who want to grow them. Here are my thoughts as someone who has been growing them for several years.

My wife's from China. They add Red Dates (dried Jujube) to a number of cooked food particularly soups.

I have a love/hate relationship with this tree. Very important; DO NOT plant Jujube in ground unless you're prepared to deal with highly invasive and destructive roots and shoots. They can send out roots and pop up as far as 50 feet from the main tree. Our back fence neighbor has a mature tree and I've been fighting thorny shoots ALL over the lawn for the last few years. It's gotten so bad that we started getting dead spots in the grass. Delicious fruit though.
I use the ‘2 trees in one hole’ planting method also. I actually find that they do better when planted like this, than if planted solo.

Ahh this makes me miss the Jujube trees we planted back in Texas, they were so prolific and did amazing in the heat... I have been trying to find some tree seedlings to buy in Ontario, Canada but they are always sold out. I have plenty of other trees to plant for now, but I miss those dainty little star flowers!

I was surprised to hear you need two trees...yes I did originally plant two seeds from a friend's tree. My fruit is ready in July when we sometimes get rain in Chihuahua. If it rains, the fruit can crack. I think this is why it's hard to grow commercially because cracked fruit can grow mould. I give these a vinegar bath and cook them. Most new trees grow from an exposed root that was damaged by digging a hole for another plant. I pot these in winter. The leaves make an insect repellent by soaking them in vinegar. The small prickles are very irritating so the tree makes a good security fence if you are willing to donate fruit.

Thank you for your video. I had just purchased some ju ju 🐝’s at our Asian Market and I came here to learn more. I wasn’t sure when they were ripe or not and decided to just bite into one. I found that they do taste of apple, are dry and marshmallow-ey in a sense. I am not sure how I feel about them yet. I am inspired to try the dried ones as a tea however. 😊

Greetings from zone 8b in the South Puget Sound. Any feedback on productivity/cultivar selection? I know we have a difficult time for this given our relatively mild summers. I have a very small lot here in Tacoma and really want to grow jujubes, but I have to plan carefully so wondering if its worth it?

You mention in the beginning of this video that jujube needs a little bit of special care, but I can't find where you talk about what that care would look like other than planting two for cross pollination. I'm trying to decide where to plant mine--I have a lot of land that is quite wet in the winter, at the bottom of a valley.
I have two jujube trees in my backyard..Georgia 388 and Li..both in the ground for 5 years now but has not fruit on them..lots of flowers but no fruit..can u give me advice for fruiting??

Awesome video 👏🏼 I live in Northern Canada climate zone 7b (5F-10F) would a Jujube be able to tolerate our climate. We get about 4 feet of snow in the winter.
I’ve got a Li Jujube and am going to purchase a Lang. I’ve heard of people planting two in one hole. My trees are in 17 gallon containers. Can I do that in containers as well? And can I plant two in one hole with other fruit trees, like pomegranate, peach, apple or fig?
We had one of those but we had to take it down. The roots we’re getting out of hand an growing invasive
I have been planting the heck out of them and grafting varieties on root stock suckers, but haven't gotten a crop yet on the 2 yr old Li and Sugar cane. What do yours get as far as fertilizer? We are organic, and just this year did I think it would be wise to put down fertilizer for them. I went with the Hollytone chicken manure based stuff. Whatever you are doing seems to be working.
I completely neglect them 😂. They are planted in my poultry paddock, and so they do get a lot of fertilizer from the chickens and ducks.
Where do you find your trees and will they grow in Missouri I live 10 miles out of Lake of the Ozarks dead center in Missouri

Wow, how to do you attract bees at 120 degree heat?. My tree produce lots of flowers but no insect, therefore not too much fruits. My tree is very skinny like fish bone at 25 ft high. How do you get them to grow fat stump? It got plenty of fertilizer and water.
Are you watering the tree? They are drought tolerant, but that is high heat, especially if it is new.
I love jujube fruit .my grandma or grandpa planted the tree in summer. there were lot of fruit ,all kids from or neighbour came and enjoy the fruit and even in our school break time our school friends came to eat berries. But now there are no more jujube trees .I want to plant trees there( Kashmir)give me the best tip to grow.thank you so much in advance

just wonder how old is your tree. I live in happy valley Oregon and I have about 7 different kinds of jujube but they have not produced any fruits yet.
Is your jujubes grafted or seedling or marcotted? I bought mine in winter June, 2021, fruiting in Jan/Feb 2022.

@@kim-uyentruong3416 here in Oregon, the weather is cold and wet. My jujube is still dormant at this time of the year. I can harvest my jujube in late October. I got quite a bit of sugar cane and honey jar jujube. My ga886 has not produced any fruit yet.

I love Jujubes whether fresh or in soup, can you it in UK weather?
Portland has similar weather. They can definitely be grown in the UK. They make it a little bit of die back if you have a very cold temperatures for an extended period but the plant will bounce back

Can dried ones be eaten straight out of the bag? I've never tried jujubes but I found a bag that I bought in my spice cupboard, I ended up here because I've decided to finally use them, and was looking for ideas... Then growing videos appeared in the suggestions 😂 I was also wondering if they can grow in the UK 😊

@@ParkrosePermaculture You should plant GA-866 variety, Its the best. I have planted Li, Lang and GA866. and now consider replacing the other 2 with GA866.
