Brens looking like a wiry boxer that grew up in a poor orphanage where he had to fight every day and never got enough to eat. Eventually he became a champion featherweight fighter at the local club only to get involved in the mob by refusing to throw a fight. The boss doesn't kill him though, because he likes his attitude, and now he's an enforcer sent around to collect debts. He seems scrawny, but he's the most ruthless one.
When Avast becomes the voice of reasoning, you know you have reached the 13th dimension. As far as OW2 goes, I think a lot of people are forgetting the new passives that were added, especially for tanks. Some abilities will have less impact on tanks. Of course I'm not in the alpha so....... who knows :)
They should make a new hero that temporarily copies itself and you can decide which one you want to be when it fades. Kind of like Adept Shade in Starcraft 2.
You could split and only peek with a half hitbox making you harder to hit but only deal half damage as the right or left orb would be blocked by walls. I want more wild changes like this, I don't know why it was received as so bizarre when it's more interesting than thinking about macro passives. Additionally map geometry could make this really interesting when fighting around a column, especially in push.
I think Zen should get a damage reduction buff when he’s charging up his right click. Like 25% less damage taken when he’s getting ready to launch the volley. I’m sure that could be abused but it’s at least some defensive tool that doesn’t take away any of his current kit.
My biggest problem is that thematically I have never felt like Doomfist has lived up to his reputation. This guy is meant to be able to topple buildings with the gauntlet, and now it's becoming even weaker. I really think his ult should REALLY show off the gauntlet; maybe he charges a punch and creates a huge amount of wind by sheer virtue of the punches force, knocking all enemies back, hurting them if they hit a wall. Could make for some funny off the map kills. I've just never felt a lot of "doom" in Doomfist.
Bren's ideas for reworks are wild, and if it was anyone else I'd assume they were high af, but I'd love to see what he could have done with a creator experimental patch. Things like zen splitting into two probably wouldn't be viable to implement for an event like that, but crazy experimental changes have usually been fun even if they weren't balanced.
I loved Sideshow mentioning that Doom's ult should be a grab because I thought something similar where he grabs someone, slams them to the ground, dealing damage, and it creates a crater that knocks up people in the range and stuns the grabbed target
Some of these reworks are real wacky. I mean, DF is still kind of in his own realm, but Orisa plays as a brand new hero. Not sure about y'all, but this counts as half a new hero to me. Same face, new play.
All right, anyone who was confused by the Jonah/Easter segment, let me explain. Yes, Easter is a bit of a combination between a pagan fertility festival and the resurrection of Christ. Easter is some pagan fertility godess, but the date of Easter is determined by Christ's resurrection, which is something like the Sunday after Passover which has something to do with the full moon, it's complicated. Anyway, that's why it changes so much. The Jonah comment isn't actually that far off-base, because Christ being in the tomb 3 days is a parallel to Jonah being in the belly of the fish for 3 days (fish, not necessarily whale, we don't know). "For as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of a huge fish, so the Son of Man will be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth" (Matthew 12:40). Also, yes, a whale would fit because its throat is small so Jonah would've been in the relatively-safe mouth part of the whale and so not die. A whale's small throat makes that story *more* believable, not false.
Reinforce with his classic "ignore the glaring issues and just be overly positive and supportive of the dev team that has only let us down" mentality hitting strong with this one
38:41 So when Sideshow stated that Orisa's ult is like an ult from a MOBA, well yes. It's litteraly Nunu's ult + Galio's taunt from League. Honestly sounds fun and a cool ability so I clearly don't mind it.
Not gonna lie, the "flies up with him" idea is actually great. Think about it: if he uses meteor strike, his team loses effectively a player on the field; if he was to take someone with him, that would even things out. Only problem with that is if he took that player in his backline. To counter that, you could make it so that he just goes up and down in the same spot where he grabbed the enemy.
54:45 what if to add to Johnny's point it was kinda like charizards ult in pokemon unite. Where doom grabs one opponent launches up into the air like his normal ult is, you can still reposition it and move it around and stuff, then it comes down deals dmg in aoe and suplexes the enemy u grabbed dealing quite a bit of dmg to them. So either you can use it to engage into the enemy team dealing a lot of dmg to the grabbed hero and some aoe to surronding heroes, or grab an enemy and then go back to the safety of your team and you all can pile on the pick
Man, hearing Sojourn's abilities made me realize how broken a new-age dive comp would be. Imagine Sojourn, Tracer, D.Va/Ball/Winston (whichever tank is most broken at launch), Zen, Brig. The Sojourn slows their backline, Zen discords, Tracer and the tank dive them, fight over. I'm scared to play any support other than Moira or Brig into that.
Instead of a pull (we already have 3 tank ults that are basically grav), it would be cool to see meteor strike launch people from the point of impact. This would both fit into the doom theory of disrupting tight formations and make it harder for teams to just camp and spam the circle like they do on live, increasing survivability.
I think avast’s observation on the dev’s lack of game awareness is incorrect? Didnt they say they essentially thought of it, but didn’t make enough changes yet, however they are working on it?
That’s not what they said. They said that they were planning to make 1 update going from alpha to beta. However, the weak tanks and supports were so pressing they decided to update the alpha.
26:25 i think its more bcuz of the fact that no new hero has been introduced in the past 2 years or so. This makes it easier to balance since u only have the same 30 heroes to account for and not having to account for new heroes with different new abilities that might change up the meta. Bcuz the ability might b busted or comboing x new hero with y current hero thats already in the game can make an op comp
my favorite part of bren episodes are the moments when Bren is absolutely astonished that the other guys don't immediately buy into his idea when that idea is the most absurd shit you've ever heard. good stuff.
"didnt they already confirm doomfist is a tank? they said that everything was on the table and theyre trying stuff out" lmaooo bren just casually asking and answering his own question in the same sentence.
Maybe Doom's passive gives shields to teammates too so he would be like a turbo aggressive dive tank or something. Would be cool to see but idk how good it would be
I think it would be too strong. You are then adding over health to allies similar yo old brig with health packs. But health pack only effected one person who you put it on. I like the idea of an aoe defense ability for allies. What do you think about block stacks? He gives a block stack to a nearby ally or allies for a number of targets hit by an ability. And it blocked 1 attack whether itsa single tracer bullet or a widow head shot.
Giving extra health to teammates is generally a non liked thing. All of the abilities that did it have been gotten rid of other then brigs rally which has been heavily nerfed over time.
22:19 does anyone have a timestamp of the dev livestream when they said they weren't expecting to patch the alpha at all? I watched it live and I rewatched the vod and I didn't hear it at all
Conner did not hear the devs the full dev statement correctly, they said they had expected fast heroes to be oppressive and had added mitigations to that, but were surprised the level of which those heroes can carry games when in the hands of pros despite the mitigations.
i think they should make the doom ult channeling like the new orisa one, and the radius slowly gets larger the more you channel it to a point, then it can be used more for creating space and blocking off an area (i could see how this could cause some issues in certain spots though)
I am so glad Bren isn't on the dev team this game would be fucked with Zen splitting into two, Doom having a glorified halt as an ultimate, and a character named "Dungslinger" that throws its shit at the enemy
Did Avast actually watch the dev stream tho? they said they weren't planning to patch this early into the alpha and this often not not patch at all. They also said that they anticipated off tanks to be stronger and supports to be weaker from their playtests. They said they were surprised to hear the COMUNITY think that main tanks will be strong(before alpha). Can't tell if he's just overreacting or if he doesn't understand English anymore.
Bren's take on splitting Zen in two actually isn't bad. You could use it as a dodge that recharges over time and survive certain attacks when you time it right. Maybe something else than splitting him in two though...
In regards to the game slowing down, it could be that without two tanks you can't just run over shorthanded teams with no risk of trades anymore. If so this is a MASSIVE improvement over live. Single picks determining fights has always been a big source of both misery and toxicity.
I think the point of the alpha is to test the technical aspects of the game is working well n enough, as the devs were saying the winston couldn't fit through a doorway n stuff. So my guess is that they were testing the new features and things in ow2 and then balance the game during the alpha would be my guess, their priority would be in get the game running then focus on balance.
Listening to the Doomfist talk I wonder if a earthquake type ability would suit his ultimate. Either add a short duration knock back to his the end of his ult when he lands.... or maybe he literally punched down into the ground and creates a ripple along the ground that knocks over players in the line it creates and maybe does some kind of unique damage like dot lightening. But the quake caused by the punch would travel forward so you could avoid / counterplay the ult if you move out of line-of-sight in time. Some kind of short cc could give him a chance to set up attack or escape when he ults then. Thoughts
One thing I don’t hear talked about enough in regards to Overwatch’s downfall is the drop off in cinematic content. Those animated shorts breathed so much life into the world of overwatch. I want to say they would drop every 6 months or so and now we just don’t get any of them. I remember seeing stuff about them losing people from the cinematic part of the team, but I would have never expected that it would completely halt the production for this long. I would love to hear more info about why we don’t get them and/or if more are planned. The last one (OW2 announcement) was epic
The livestream wasn't even an hour long, it was 45 minutes. Sure, it could have been shorter, but if they'd done a 30 minute livestream people would have been pissed how short it was. I do think maybe they need to save the livestreams for when they're showing actual footage; this could have been a video, but I appreciate they're trying. As long as they keep it up.
The new doom sounds very similar to ball IMO. Absorbing damage like adaptive shields, Punch for engagements like grapple, Slam/uppercut like Ball's piledriver. Honestly I think doom will be fine, unless I'm massively mis-interpreting him.
I agree with Avast that hearing they weren't planning to make balance changes to the alpha was incredibly shocking. You were going to have the pros play on a build for over a month. Then ~ a week before the league goes live introduce a balance change for the beta which you have no idea the ramifications of. The alpha was out for an hour before they realized Sojourn's voice lines were missing and had to add them. They underestimated how good flankers were vs supports without a second tank. I also don't think that I agree that the balance has been very good. The community has been asking for cassidy nerfs and instead they buff him by letting him roll in the air while keeping 225 hp, which is just outside a very important break point. Does anybody know why they buffed hanzo's storm arrows to be able to ricochet once? These feel like OW2 buffs and yet rein was one of the first heroes that we knew the OW2 kit of, but has recieved 0 changes in the mean time. It sounds like the game has changed so much since the pros played it in Hawaii. As it should, but this off season has been so long. It's unhealthy for the league imo.
I think if they give supports more survivability, then zen needs a "self transcendence". For just a few seconds, he can't take damage or attack. And he loses his both his orbs from his targets. That way, he can't effect the battlefield, but it gives good teams time to peel for him. Now, this could make entire strategies of "attack zen, force his team back, then collapse on him" but it's better than zen insta dying in the back. Honestly, every support needs some kind of escape. Right now, zen doesn't have one. And if they are taking shield bash from being, she is losing her big ones as well.
In Paladins, a tank Khan has an ult that grabs an enemy player and you can just yeet them the fuck off the map. I think a doom ult where he grabs someone and throws them would be cool. Not super far though. Against a wall, it does full punch damage. And if a ledge is nearby, why not. Throw them off the map. I think that’d be sick
I always find the talks about characters launching in an unbalanced state to be interesting because yeah, sometimes a hero is just blatantly overtuned or straight overpowered like Echo and other times you have heroes like Ashe where everyone thought she was just worse than Cassidy at closer ranges and worse than Widow at longer ranges and thereby she was just an average character. It wasn't until people learned that you can yeet her dynamite over shields and oneshot headshot everyone with Mercy pocket and suddenly everyone lost their minds for months until she was nerfed. It's simply hard to tell if a hero is actually balanced or not when they first release because it takes time to learn all their interactions, how to combo ults, do they synergize with certain tanks and supports, trial and error learning how to counter them etc. Calling Sojourn overpowered when she isn't even out yet seems insane. I mean, i say that while also agreeing that she's probably at least overtuned and her kit is way too fucking full because no dps that can oneshot headshot should also have a mass CC ability like Mei's Blizzard Lite plus Genji dash levels of mobility.
They turned orsia into a super mother duck. She has a rein esc pin in her spear for peal, as well as her new ult and a mini defence matrix. instead of a shield. it seems so much more fun an interactive in terms of defensive abilities
I wonder if the “game slowing down” is referring to the global ULT nerf. If teams are still stuck on the idea of poking until they have ULTs then of course it’s going to feel slow
Every episode I try to just do the audio version only to have something happens that I need to see for clarification. Couldn't even make it past Bren's arrival this week.
Molly's comment about the game feeling "slower" actually makes a lot of sense. A game feeling fast has less to do with the literal quantity of actions and more to do with excitement and tension. Overwatch was at its best and most exciting when fights meant something. Ult advantages, picks, time pressure all created tension and leant meaning to engagements. The way they're setting up OW2 reminds me of soccer. I love soccer. But it's incredibly boring to watch because there's really only a few actual tense moments and the majority is just predictable limited 1 on 1s that don't actually mean anything. Just a bunch of back and forth.
also, i get that bren goes on a weird point sometimes, and it can add some humor to kinda interrupt him and pull his leg about it. but sometimes you just gotta let a guy finish his sentences. it's kind of every episode he's in. not trying to point figners.
Sorry but you're all tripping if you think the game is the most balanced it's ever been currently. It's in an absolutely dire state. The characters requiring the least skill and aim requirements are the strongest characters in game, the only exception is Tracer. Everything else requiring aim is worse than something else that requires none.
doomfists ult should be transformative instead of a cast/channeled type, granting him improved resilience or invul to CC or higher dmg or any of those things

Can't wait for Avast's next Plat Chat appearence where there will no longer be a wall behind him.
prison isn't THAT easy to break out of man
Correct, instead of a wall itll be iron bars lmao
Just the void
Today I learned that one of the biggest FM personalities watches Plat Chat. Didnt expect these communities to overlap
As someone who watches both fm and overwatch I approve.
Brens so innovative he's not just thinking outside the box, he's thinking *about* the box.
damn... that's deep
I read this without context and had no clue what this meant, I finally reached the part in the vid oml
I hope that plat chat reads this comment
Lmao
Holy shit that's so good lmao
New overwatch tie-in comic available now!
What game is this?
Kurt is literally a laugh track for Plat Chat
Nothing compares to Avast yelling "WHAT ARE WE DOING?!?! END THE EPISODE!!" when Bren gets into religion
Yeah it was hilarious
what timestamp?

Bren's on that Incredibles vibe - If everyone's overpowered... no one is
yea, but then we get power creep again.
Bren showing up three minutes into the recording wearing his snazziest gear is so good. I'm thankful for the joys Plat Chat brings every week.
I found Bren’s idea for a defensive ability on Zen pretty smart and easy to understand, which concerns me.
The Zen splitting idea is not that weird at all. I know it's a RTS, but archer splits in AOE2 is top-level micro.
Eyyy some AoE2 micro is always a treat! Some of that in OW would be quite interesting. But can a split zen outmicro ballistics tho?..
My biggest problem is that thematically I have never felt like Doomfist has lived up to his reputation. Some of these reworks are real wacky. I mean, DF is still kind of in his own realm, but Orisa plays as a brand new hero.
Not sure about y'all, but this counts as half a new hero to me. Same face, new play.

kurt's laugh is the best part of the episodes
I'm ngl, Kurt's distant and muffled laughs in the background is my favorite part of this podcast lmao

Bren absolutely dripped to the socks. Looks pretty slick ngl

typical plat chat

I am certain Bren mentioned the entire Orisa thing before in even similar wording. Cool that he still holds his thoughts on her after all this time.
He's mentioned that story like 3 other times, yet none of them seem to remember it
In Paladins, a tank Khan has an ult that grabs an enemy player and you can just yeet them the fuck off the map. I think a doom ult where he grabs someone and throws them would be cool. Not super far though. Against a wall, it does full punch damage. And if a ledge is nearby, why not. Throw them off the map. I think that’d be sick
My only takeaway is that Dallas have the 3 best tank players this year.
FYI Easter changes dates on the Gregorian calendar because it comes after the Jewish Passover feast, which is tied to the Hebrew calendar.
one of the best episodes, I can`t
Doomfist ult like Imperius grab/slam ult would be cool (from Heroes of the Storm).
bren looks like he's straight out of Night at the Roxbury
I mean, i say that while also agreeing that she's probably at least overtuned and her kit is way too fucking full because no dps that can oneshot headshot should also have a mass CC ability like Mei's Blizzard Lite plus Genji dash levels of mobility.
let zen take off the robes to reveal his 8 pack bullet reflecting abs and large muscle
I love plat chat
does anyone have the link for the article?
I feel/hope doomfist ult would become a regular punch to the ground rather than jumping into the sky for no reason. It should just be like shatter
Orisa Ult sounds like Khan from Paladins
They should have flipped the thumbnail so Orisa is throwing a javelin at Aaron Keller
let's see if Avast's wall still has sockets in the next episode
What you describe with doomfists ult with the grapple and pulling someone away is like skarner ult from lol
Bren made this episode absolutely top drawer
What if new doom ult knocked enemies up in the same area circle when he jumps up and he comes down and does it again, like a sigma ult
You should definitely start a theology podcast, hmu if you need guests 🤙
Bren looking like a super villain
I like shooting shields because I can actually hit them. Aiming at players is much harder.
The ending lmao
God I love avast's inputs
The Bren Zen opinion change had me dying
also, i get that bren goes on a weird point sometimes, and it can add some humor to kinda interrupt him and pull his leg about it. but sometimes you just gotta let a guy finish his sentences. it's kind of every episode he's in. not trying to point figners.
Honestly... I kinda hope we start on a double main support meta and all the teams that only hired flex supports are screwed 😂
Why does Johnny have so many doors behind him? Where do they go?
Avast: completely trashing the dev team
Also Avast: But I'm saying overall it's a positive thing 😂
Actually dying laughing at the origins of Christianity/whales segment 😂
